CHU de Toulouse, 24 chemin de Pouvourville, 31059 Toulouse cedex 9, France.

In the context of smoking cessation, the shared educational assessment (BEP) enables us to assess the smoker's needs, define specific objectives and set up appropriate educational workshops. This multidisciplinary approach helps smokers to maintain their smoking cessation. The BEP is the first step in the educational process, exploring the various classic dimensions of therapeutic patient education (TPE) and then defining an action plan based on the priorities identified.

[Smoking cessation in smokers under treatment for lung cancer. Current data].

Rev Med Liege

January 2024

Service des Maladies respiratoires, CHR Metz-Thionville, France.

In 2020, lung cancer was the cause of 18 % of all cancer deaths; smoking accounting for around 90 % of all lung cancers. Despite advances in lung cancer treatment, tobacco control measures are the most effective in curbing the lung cancer epidemic. Nevertheless, smoking cessation at all stages of the cancer process is associated with benefits in terms of cure, improved life expectancy and quality of life for patients, reduced medical or surgical complications, and reduced risk of recurrence or occurrence of a second primary cancer.

[Inhaled marijuana and the lung, a toxic cocktail?].

Rev Mal Respir

October 2022

Unite de recherche clinique, centre hospitalier Henri Laborit, université de Poitiers, Poitiers, France.

Unlike the well-documented effects of tobacco smoke on the lung, the effects of cannabis smoke remain controversial, the main bias consisting in co-consumption of tobacco. That said, the composition of joint smoke is close to that of cigarettes, containing many compounds that are carcinogenic and/or alter the respiratory epithelium. Confirmed respiratory effects in chronic cannabis smokers include aggravated chronic bronchitis symptoms, a cumulative effect with tobacco on COPD and emphysema occurrence, an increased risk of bullous emphysema, and pneumothorax with heightened risk of recurrence after pleural symphysis.

Several studies have shown that lung cancer screening, using annual low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan in a targeted population of smokers and ex-smokers reduces overall and lung cancer specific mortality rates. This form of screening strategy is not currently established for use in France by the French High Authority for Health. Quitting smoking is the most important measure in reducing mortality from lung cancer.
