Tumours induce changes in body odours. We compared volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soiled bedding of a lung adenocarcinoma male mouse model in which cancer had (CC) versus had not (NC) been induced by doxycycline at three conditions: before (T0), after 2 weeks (T2; early tumour development), after 12 weeks (T12; late tumour development) of the induction. In an earlier study, wild-derived mice behaviourally discriminated between CC and NC soiled bedding at T2 and T12.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

October 2024

Section on Medical Neuroendocrinology, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, United States.

Few reports have highlighted the rare presence of somatic variants in clinically aggressive, metastatic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PCC/PGL); however, none have addressed detailed clinical presentation (including biochemistry and imaging) and management of these patients. Here, we address these clinical features and management based on four PCC patients with somatic variants from our National Institutes of Health PCC/PGL cohort. A total of 192 patients underwent exome sequencing (germline, somatic, or both), and four males were found to have somatic variants (with additional somatic and oncogenic variants in patients 2 and 4, respectively).

Center of Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases, Amsterdam University Medical Centers, Location AMC, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: In May 2019, Ghana piloted the introduction of RTS,S malaria vaccine into routine immunization in 42 districts of seven of the 16 regions. The RTS,S malaria vaccine implementation programme (MVIP) post-introduction evaluation (PIE) conducted in Ghana, assessed the immunization system as well as healthcare worker and caregiver experiences during the phase-one rollout but was less expressive on quantitative grading of the respective thematic areas of the vaccine introduction plan. Given the utility of summary statistics in programme evaluation and communication, this follow-up study aimed to provide an overall rating of the country's performance regarding the MVIP .

The isotopic compositions of samples returned from Cb-type asteroid Ryugu and Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites are distinct from other carbonaceous chondrites, which has led to the suggestion that Ryugu/CI chondrites formed in a different region of the accretion disk, possibly around the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. We show that, like for Fe, Ryugu and CI chondrites also have indistinguishable Ni isotope anomalies, which differ from those of other carbonaceous chondrites. We propose that this unique Fe and Ni isotopic composition reflects different accretion efficiencies of small FeNi metal grains among the carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies.

Background: Tumor-associated macrophages participate in the complex network of support that favors tumor growth. Among the various strategies that have been developed to target these cells, the blockade of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF-1R) receptor is one of the most promising ones. Here, we characterize the resulting state of human macrophages exposed to a CSF-1R kinase inhibitor.

Online two-dimensional liquid chromatography can be used under various separation modes but is sometimes limited in terms of orthogonality, especially for the analysis of neutral compounds. The use of SFC in the second dimension offers a wide choice of mobile and stationary phases, suggesting retention properties complementary to those of the first dimension. Initial works on online LCxSFC coupling published in the literature highlighted the first difficulties of solvent compatibility or potential problems with bubbles created by CO in loops.

The eco-epidemiology of tick-borne diseases hinges on the abundance and distribution of hosts that sustain tick populations and the pathogens they carry. Research into the role of bird species in the feeding of Ixodes ricinus ticks, the primary tick species of veterinary and public health importance in Europe, remains scarce. This study endeavors to bridge these knowledge gaps by (i) assessing the density of feeding ticks (DFT) within a bird community to pinpoint species making substantial contributions, and (ii) exploring interannual variations in DFT over an extended timeline.
