Background: The evaluation of trauma center performance implies the use of indicators that evaluate clinical processes. Despite the availability of routinely collected clinical data in most trauma systems, quality improvement efforts are often limited to hospital-based audit of adverse patient outcomes.
Objective: To identify and evaluate a series of process performance indicators (PPI) that can be calculated using routinely collected trauma registry data.

Purpose: Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation is a reversible post-translational modification that requires the contribution of the enzymes poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) and poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG). Our study explores expression and activity of PARP-1 and PARG in uveal melanoma cell lines with varying tumorigenic properties.
Methods: Gene profiling on microarrays was conducted using RNA prepared from the uveal melanoma cell lines T97, T98, T108, and T115.

Co-culturing human skin keratinocytes along with a feeder layer has proven to considerably improve their proliferative properties by delaying massive induction of terminal differentiation. Through a yet unclear mechanism, we recently reported that irradiated 3T3 (i3T3) fibroblasts used as a feeder layer increase the nuclear content of Sp1, a positive transcription factor (TF) that plays a critical role in many cellular functions including cell proliferation, into both adult skin keratinocytes and newborn skin keratinocytes. In this study, we examined the influence of i3T3 on the expression and DNA binding of NFI, another TF important for cell proliferation and cell cycle progression, and attempted to decipher the mechanism by which the feeder layer contributes at maintaining higher levels of these TFs in skin keratinocytes.

The most frequent mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation is a 4977 bp deletion known as the common deletion (mtDNA(CD4977)). mtDNA(CD4977) is related to skin photo-aging and to chronological aging of cells with high-energy demands such as neurons and muscle cells. The human eye contains both sun-exposed (cornea, iris) and high-energy demand structures (retina).

Sunlight exposure of the eye leads to pathologies including photokeratitis, cortical cataracts, pterygium, actinic conjunctivitis and age-related macular degeneration. It is well established that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiations leads to DNA damage, mainly cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs). CPD formation is the principal factor involved in skin cancer.

Objective: Prospective studies have shown that effort-reward imbalance (ERI) at work is associated with the incidence of a first coronary heart disease (CHD) event. However, it is unknown whether ERI at work increases the risk of recurrent CHD events. The objective of this study was to determine whether ERI at work and its components (effort and reward) increase the risk of recurrent CHD in post-myocardial infarction (post-MI) workers.

Background: Trauma center performance evaluations generally include adjustment for injury severity, age, and comorbidity. However, disparities across trauma centers may be due to other differences in source populations that are not accounted for, such as socioeconomic status (SES). We aimed to evaluate whether SES influences trauma center performance evaluations in an inclusive trauma system with universal access to health care.

Background: Elderly trauma patients represent a unique clientele requiring specialised care but they rarely benefit from standardised care strategies within trauma systems. We aimed to evaluate whether trauma centres with lower/higher than expected mortality amongst patients <65 years of age have similar results for geriatric patients. A secondary objective was to compare transfer to level I/II trauma centres across age groups.

We present a case of axillary hematoma complicating an ultrasound-guided infraclavicular block in a patient with undiagnosed mycotic aneurysms of the peripheral arteries. Mycotic aneurysm is a rare medical condition with well-identified risk factors. When performing regional anesthesia in patients with these risk factors, clinicians should have a high degree of suspicion about the possible existence of vascular anomalies.

Background: : Despite serious documented limitations, the Trauma Injury Severity Score (TRISS) is still used for risk adjustment in trauma system evaluation and clinical research. Several modifications have been proposed to address TRISS limitations. We aimed to assess the impact of proposed TRISS modifications on the accuracy of mortality prediction for blunt trauma.

Objective: We sought to evaluate the performance of the Prehospital Index (PHI), the high velocity impact (HVI) criterion and emergency medical technician (EMT) judgment for the prehospital triage of injured patients.
Methods: The study population included all prehospital trauma patients transported by an emergency medical service to 2 level I trauma centres for adults. All prehospital run sheets were linked to trauma registry data.

Background: The HIV epidemic is very heterogeneous at the district level in the four Southern states of India most affected by the epidemic and where transmission is mainly heterosexual. The authors carried out an ecological study of the relationship between high-risk population parameters and HIV prevalence among pregnant women (ANC HIV prevalence).
Methods: The data used in this study included: ANC HIV prevalence available from the National AIDS Control Organization (dependent variable); data on prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers (FSWs), their clients and high-risk men who have sex with men (HR-MSM) from studies carried out in 24 districts under Avahan; data on clients' volume reported by FSWs and on the size estimates of FSWs and HR-MSM in each district; and census data.

Background: Good success rates have been reported with ultrasound-guided infraclavicular block using one or multiple injections of local anesthetic. We hypothesized that a separate injection of local anesthetics on each cord enhances the onset of complete sensory block. We designed this prospective randomized study to compare the rate of complete sensory block using one or three injections of local anesthetic.

Background Data: The trauma injury severity score (TRISS) has been used for over 20 years for retrospective risk assessment in trauma populations. The TRISS has serious limitations, which may compromise the validity of trauma care evaluations.
Objective: To derive and validate a new mortality prediction model, the trauma risk adjustment model (TRAM), and to compare the performance of the TRAM to that of the TRISS in terms of predictive validity and risk adjustment.

There is evidence for a relationship between raised inflammatory markers, including high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), measured late in life, and an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. This study evaluates the association of midlife hs-CRP concentrations with late-life longitudinal trends in cognitive function. Data are from the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study (HAAS), a longitudinal community-based study of Japanese American men.

Background: Measurement of the ankle-to-brachial index (ABI) is a noninvasive test to assess peripheral arterial disease. A low ABI is a strong correlate of cardiovascular disease and subsequent mortality. Evidence indicates the existence of vascular components in the pathogenesis of dementia.

Many factors have been linked to return to work after a back pain episode, but our understanding of this phenomenon is limited and cross-sectional dichotomous indices of return to work are not valid measures of this construct. To describe the course of "return to work in good health" (RWGH--a composite index of back pain outcome) among workers who consulted in primary care settings for back pain and identify its determinants, a 2-year prospective study was conducted. Subjects (n = 1,007, 68.
