Background: Sodium lactate has been shown to improve hemodynamics and avoid fluid overload. The objective of this study was to confirm a beneficial effect on fluid balance with sodium lactate infusion and to specify whether the advantage of lactate is related to a negative chloride balance, its particular metabolism, or simply its energy load.
Methods: This was an interventional, randomized, open-label, controlled experimental study.

Background: Endocan is a lung endothelial cell secreted proteoglycan, possessing multiple physiological roles and potential therapeutic and diagnostic utility as biomarker in pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Endocan synthesis and secretion can be induced by proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, but can also be subject of proteolytic degradation causing preanalytical variation.
Methods: We investigated the stability of endocan in conventional serum, plasma, anticoagulated whole blood, as well as whole blood and plasma stabilized with protease inhibitors.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by acute tubular necrosis (ATN) which involves mainly proximal tubules. Past AKI is associated with higher risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The MUC1 mucin is a large glycoprotein responsible for epithelial protection and locates to convoluted distal tubules and collecting ducts.

is a Gram-negative coccobacillus considered as a commensal organism from the upper respiratory tract, with low pathogenic potential. The phenotypical conventional identification is difficult and the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight technology has increased the resolution of identification of this bacterium. We report a fatal case of endocarditis due to whose identification was confirmed by 16S rRNA, and we review the literature on this pathogen in endocarditis.

Cancer cell metabolism is largely controlled by oncogenic signals and nutrient availability. Here, we highlighted that the glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper (GILZ), an intracellular protein influencing many signaling pathways, reprograms cancer cell metabolism to promote proliferation. We provided evidence that GILZ overexpression induced a significant increase of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation as evidenced by the augmentation in basal respiration, ATP-linked respiration as well as respiratory capacity.

Age-related EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorders form a new clinicopathological group. Until recently, this group was associated with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), characterised by an aggressive clinical presentation and a poor prognosis. Recent findings in Western Caucasian patients, however, suggest that this entity covers a wide spectrum of diseases, ranging from reactive follicular hyperplasia (HR) to DLBCL.

The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) plays a pivotal role in systemic calcium metabolism by regulating parathyroid hormone secretion and urinary calcium excretion. The diseases caused by an abnormality of the CaSR are genetically determined or are more rarely acquired. The genetic diseases consist of hyper- or hypocalcemia disorders.

Bone metastasis is the major deleterious event in prostate cancer (PCa). TMPRSS2-ERG fusion is one of the most common chromosomic rearrangements in PCa. However, its implication in bone metastasis development is still unclear.

Objective: Desmoid tumours of the head and neck in children are rare, local invasive and potentially fatal tumours. The purpose of this review is to discuss the management of these tumours in the light of a case series and a review of the literature.
Material And Methods: This retrospective study summarised the medical data of children treated for desmoid tumours of the head and neck between 1976 and 2014.

Signaling through Toll-like receptors (TLRs), the main receptors in innate immunity, is essential for the defense of mucosal surfaces. It was previously shown that systemic TLR5 stimulation by bacterial flagellin induces an immediate, transient interleukin-22 (IL-22)-dependent antimicrobial response to bacterial or viral infections of the mucosa. This process was dependent on the activation of type 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILCs).

Introduction: Hyperhomocysteinemia is a biological marker that could be identified in the venous thrombotic events and rarely during acute arterial thrombotic events. The consequences can be serious. Effective diagnostic strategy is needed to optimize the management.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell (PDC) neoplasm (BPDCN) is an aggressive hematological malignancy with a poor prognosis that derives from PDCs. No consensus for optimal treatment modalities is available today and the full characterization of this leukemia is still emerging. We identified here a BPDCN-specific transcriptomic profile when compared with those of acute myeloid leukemia and T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia, as well as the transcriptomic signature of primary PDCs.

CAG triplet expansions in Ataxin-2 gene (ATXN2) cause spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 and have a role that remains to be clarified in Parkinson's disease (PD). To study the molecular events associated with these expansions, we sequenced them and analyzed the transcriptome from blood cells of controls and three patient groups diagnosed with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (herein referred to as SCA2c) or PD with or without ATXN2 triplet expansions (named SCA2p). The transcriptome profiles of these 40 patients revealed three main observations: i) a specific pattern of pathways related to cellular contacts, proliferation and differentiation associated with SCA2p group, ii) similarities between the SCA2p and sporadic PD groups in genes and pathways known to be altered in PD such as Wnt, Ephrin and Leukocyte extravasation signaling iii) RNA metabolism disturbances with "RNA-binding" and "poly(A) RNA-binding" as a common feature in all groups.

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a poorly recognized cause of collapsing glomerulopathy. The frequency and significance of collapsing glomerulopathy associated with renal TMA have not been specifically studied in native kidney biopsy specimens. Here we retrospectively documented clinicopathologic features of 53 patients with histologically proven TMA in the native kidney, with special emphasis on changes due to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).

Objectives And Rationale: The purpose of this review is to highlight the chronological sequence of the appearance and function of androgens, FSH, AMH and E2 and to discuss controversies in the relationship between FSH and AMH.

This work was dedicated to the development of a reliable SPR method allowing the simultaneous and quick determination of the affinity and selectivity of designed sulfonamide derivatives for hCAIX and hCAXII versus hCAII, in order to provide an efficient tool to discover drugs for anticancer therapy of solid tumors. We performed for the first time a comparison of two immobilization approaches of hCA isoforms. First one relies on the use of an amine coupling strategy, using a CM7 chip to obtain higher immobilization levels than with a CM5 chip and consequently the affinity with an higher precision (CV% < 10%).

In 80% of infertile men with obstructive azoospermia caused by a congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD), mutations are identified in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR). For the remaining 20%, the origin of the CBAVD is unknown. A large cohort of azoospermic men with CBAVD was retrospectively reassessed with more stringent selection criteria based on consistent clinical data, complete description of semen and reproductive excurrent ducts, extensive CFTR testing, and kidney ultrasound examination.
