Background And Objectives: In 2016, France allowed men who have sex with men (MSM) to donate blood if they had not had sex with men in the previous 12 months. In April 2020, this restriction was relaxed to 4 months due to the lack of negative impact observed on blood safety. This study assesses the impact of reducing this deferral period on epidemiological surveillance indicators.

Background: Hemorrhagic shock is well documented as a leading cause of preventable fatalities among military casualties. During military operations plasma can be transfused while waiting for whole blood. This study was conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of two new freeze-dried plasma formulations in a porcine model of traumatic hemorrhagic shock.

Primary antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by thrombosis and autoantibodies directed against phospholipids or associated proteins. The genetic etiology of PAPS remains unknown. We enrolled 21 patients with thromboembolic events associated to lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin and anti β2 glycoprotein1 autoantibodies.

Introduction: The discovery of the Duffy antigen is of great significance, given its essential role in immune response and various physiological processes. Genetic mutations in the Duffy gene not only affect antigen expression but also result in different antigen types. This underscores the importance of genetic characterization for clinical studies and exploring genetic diversity within the population.

The advancement of these promising treatments requires increasing the throughput of processed cell for industrialization in order to reduce production costs. Among the various bioproduction challenges, downstream processing, including medium exchange, cell washing, cell harvesting and volume reduction, remains a critical step for which improvements are needed.

Background: Blood typing and antibody screening are key elements of transfusion safety. However, available single platform, flexible, and affordable technologies are limited, especially for extended phenotyping. Microarray-based technology allows for this extended phenotyping with the flexibility of piecemeal analysis.

Here, we report complete genome sequences of two clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, namely, Xen31 and Xen36, which have been genetically modified to express an optimized Photorhabdus luminescens luciferase operon. Xen31 and Xen36 are bioluminescent strains used widely for investigation of bacterial pathogenesis, drug discovery, and development of novel therapies.

A new paradigm has emerged recently, which consists in shifting from cell therapy to a more flexible acellular "extracellular vesicle (EV) therapy" approach, thereby opening a new and promising field in nanomedicine. Important technical limitations have still to be addressed for the large-scale production of clinical-grade EV. Cells are cultured in media supplemented with human platelet lysate (hPL) (xenogenic-free) or GMP-grade fetal calf serum (FCS).

To control capillary bleeding, surgeons may use absorbable hemostatic agents, such as Surgicel® and TachoSil®. Due to their slow resorption, their persistence can have a negative impact on tissue repair in the resected organ. To avoid complications and obtain a hemostatic agent that promotes tissue repair, a zinc-supplemented calcium alginate compress was developed: HEMO-IONIC®.

Extracellular vesicles (EV) are emergent therapeutic effectors that have reached clinical trial investigation. To translate EV-based therapeutic to clinic, the challenge is to demonstrate quality, safety, and efficacy, as required for any medicinal product. EV research translation into medicinal products is an exciting and challenging perspective.

Severe trauma is the principal cause of death among young people worldwide. Hemorrhagic shock is the leading cause of death after severe trauma. Traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS) is a complex phenomenon associating an absolute hypovolemia secondary to a sudden and significant extravascular blood loss, tissue injury, and, eventually, hypoxemia.

We compared the performance of SARS-CoV-2 neutralising antibody testing between 12 European laboratories involved in convalescent plasma trials. Raw titres differed almost 100-fold differences between laboratories when blind-testing 15 plasma samples. Calibration of titres in relation to the reference reagent and standard curve obtained by testing a dilution series reduced the inter-laboratory variability ca 10-fold.

Macrophages are important immune cells that are involved in the elimination of microbial pathogens. Following host invasion, macrophages are recruited to the site of infection, where they launch antimicrobial defense mechanisms. Effective microbial clearance by macrophages depends on phagocytosis and phagolysosomal killing mediated by oxidative burst, acidification, and degradative enzymes.

The characterization of platelet concentrates (PCs) in transfusion medicine has been performed with different analytical methods and platelet lesions (from biochemistry to cell biology) have been documented. In routine quality assessment and validation of manufacturing processes of PCs for transfusion purposes, only basic parameters are monitored and the platelet functions are not included. However, PCs undergo several manipulations during the processing and the basic parameters do not provide sensitive analyses to properly picture out the impact of the blood component preparation and storage on platelets.
