Background/objective: Offspring's optimal neurodevelopment depends on maternal dietary lipids supply during the perinatal period. Dairy products are an important source of fat in Western diets. This study aimed at examining the associations between maternal dairy fat intake during pregnancy, evaluated through biomarkers in perinatal biofluids (C15:0 and C17:0) and child's cognitive outcomes.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition and understanding the changes in autism symptoms over time is crucial for tailoring support and interventions. This study therefore aimed to investigate the changes in symptom severity in a large cohort of children with ASD over a three-year follow-up period and identify factors that influence these changes. The study included 575 children diagnosed with ASD, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years, who were assessed at baseline and again 3 years later using the Autism Diagnostic Observational Schedule-2 (ADOS-2).

Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Robert Debré Hospital, APHP, Paris-Cité University, Paris, France.

Sensory features, executive and attentional impairments are frequently reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, little is known about their complex relationships. In this study, we aim to examine the executive and attentional difficulties related to distinct sensory profiles.

Characterizing the phenotypic and genetic structure of psychopathology in UK Biobank.

Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique, Département d'Études Cognitives, École Normale Supérieure, EHESS, CNRS, PSL University, 75005, Paris, France.

Mental conditions exhibit a higher-order transdiagnostic factor structure which helps to explain the widespread comorbidity observed in psychopathology. However, the phenotypic and genetic structures of psychopathology may differ, raising questions about the validity and utility of these factors. Here, we study the phenotypic and genetic factor structures of ten psychiatric conditions using UK Biobank and public genomic data.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in France to explore the relationship between children's screen use and cognitive development using data from a nationwide birth cohort of 13,763 children.
  • Parents reported children’s screen time at ages 2, 3.5, and 5.5, while cognitive abilities were measured through standardized assessments.
  • The results showed that while watching TV during family meals correlated with lower vocabulary scores at age 2 and some negative associations with cognitive scores at ages 3.5 and 5.5, the overall impact of screen time on cognitive development was found to be weak after adjusting for various confounding factors.

Psychotropic drugs are often used to treat behavior problems in ASD with some evidence supporting efficacity (e.g.: risperidone and irritability) but also significant side effects at the short and longer-term.

Prenatal and childhood exposure to ambient air pollution and cognitive function in school-age children: Examining sensitive windows and sex-specific associations.

Environ Res

October 2023

Team of Environmental Epidemiology Applied to Development and Respiratory Health, Institute for Advanced Biosciences (IAB), Université Grenoble Alpes, Inserm, CNRS, 38700, La Tronche, France. Electronic address:

Background: Combined effect of both prenatal and early postnatal exposure to ambient air pollution on child cognition has rarely been investigated and periods of sensitivity are unknown. This study explores the temporal relationship between pre- and postnatal exposure to PM, PM, NO and child cognitive function.

Methods: Using validated spatiotemporally resolved exposure models, pre- and postnatal daily PM, PM (satellite based, 1 km resolution) and NO (chemistry-transport model, 4 km resolution) concentrations at the mother's residence were estimated for 1271 mother-child pairs from the French EDEN and PELAGIE cohorts.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates sex-related clinical differences in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability, analyzing data from 319 boys and 65 girls aged 2 to 12 years.
  • - Results show a significant male-to-female ratio of 4.9 to 1, with girls displaying higher scores in social impairment (measured by SRS-2) compared to boys, though their overall clinical profiles were mostly similar.
  • - The findings suggest that cognitive levels might correlate with the severity of ASD symptoms specifically in girls, indicating the need for tailored diagnostic considerations during assessments.

Anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) negatively affects their social interactions, and quality of life. It is necessary to identify early risk factors for anxiety to tailor prevention and interventions. We aimed to examine the clinical level of anxiety in children with ASD from 5 to 10 years of age and identify potential early risk factors 3 years earlier.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a significant impact on the quality of life (QoL) of families. This study aimed to examine, for parents of children with ASD, the dyadic effect of each parent's coping strategy on the perception of the impact of ASD on their QoL. In total, 164 couples completed self-report questionnaires, including the Par-DD-QoL, to evaluate the parental perception of QoL.

Purpose: To compare mothers and fathers perceptions of the impact of autism spectrum disorder on their Quality of Life (QoL), we used the Parental-Developmental Disorders-Quality of Life scale (Par-DD-QoL).

Method: The perception of QoL of mothers and fathers was compared for 130 pairs of parents of children with ASD and the associated variables were investigated.

Results: Mothers perceived a significantly greater impact of ASD on their QoL than fathers.

Electronic address:

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic had a strong impact on mental health in the general population. This study conducted during the first lockdown in France considered parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prospectively followed in the ELENA Cohort.

Objectives: We aimed to (1) compare the Anxiety and Depression (AaD) levels during the lockdown between mothers and fathers, (2) compare the parent's AaD between the lockdown and the last ELENA follow-up visit, and (3) identify risk factors for parental AaD during lockdown among socio-demographic and children's clinical characteristics.

Atypical sensory processing (SP) is a diagnostic criterion of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about its course during development. In this exploratory longitudinal study, we aimed to investigate the course of SP among children with ASD and identify clinical variables associated with changes.

There is limited data on long-term outcome of ASD with co-occurring intellectual disabilities (ID) and challenging behaviours in France. The EpiTED period cohort is a 15 years longitudinal study of the developmental trajectories of 281 children initially recruited at mean age of 5 years. Two contrasted developmental trajectories were identified.

[Anxiety in children and adolescents with pervasive developmental disorder without mental retardation: review of literature].

February 2012

Objective: Anxiety is highly prevalent in Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) without mental retardation but is too often misdiagnosed. The authors suggest a critical review of current data of the PDD without mental retardation in children and adolescents, in order to summarize research published in this field. After describing specific features, this article tackles the issue of prevalence of anxiety among this population, then deals with present-time assessment and treatments of comorbid anxiety.

The Pervasive Developmental Disorders complications can lead to an important life long handicap. There is an important literature about autism, but in most cases, specifically concerning children and adolescents problems. We wished to focus our attention on adults, in order to describe, on one hand their socio-adaptive profile, and on the other hand, the necessity to resort to a psycho-active treatment.
