Despite advances in anaerobic digestion (AD), full-scale implementation faces significant challenges, particularly during the start-up phase, where inoculum selection is crucial. This study examines the impact of inoculum choice on the operational and economic performance of thermophilic digesters during the start-up phase. Methanogenic reactors R3 and R4 were inoculated with digested sludge (DiS) and diluted sewage sludge (DSS), respectively, and fed with hydrolyzed source-sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (SS-OFMSW) and thickened sewage sludge, which were processed in R1 and R2, serving as acidogenic reactors.

The role of inoculum in initiating anaerobic digestion (AD), and accelerating the start-up of anaerobic digesters has been well-documented. However, the effect of aligning the origin temperature of the inoculum with the operational temperature of the new digester remains underexplored. Organic acids (citric and acetic), chilled water, epsom and gypsum were tested for ammonia recovery from anaerobic digestate in a bench-scale stripping-scrubbing experimental setup. Citric acid was found to give excellent scrubbing performance equivalent to that of sulfuric acid but required double the acid dosage due to its partial dissociation characteristics. Acetic acid performed satisfactorily at low temperature and was susceptible to vaporization due to stripping effect in the scrubbing unit, while the other three scrubbing agents were found to be ineffective.

This paper describes the use of global sensitivity analysis (GSA) for factor prioritization in nutrient recovery model (NRM) applications. The aim was to select the most important factors influencing important NRM model outputs such as biogas production, digestate composition and pH, ammonium sulfate recovery, struvite production, product purity, particle size and density, air and chemical requirements, scaling potential, among others. Factors considered for GSA involve: 1) input waste stream characteristics, 2) process operational factors, and 3) kinetic parameters incorporated in the NRMs.

In this study a complementary modeling and experimental approach was used to explore how growth controls the NADPH generation and availability, and the resulting impact on PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate) yields and kinetics. Membrane-assisted solvent extraction was applied for the determination of different classes of compounds in water, having K(o/w) (octanol-water partition coefficient) values between 10(1) (aniline) and 10(8) (methyl stearate), by means of experimental designs. Four solvents were investigated--propan-2-ol, ethyl acetate, diisopropyl ether and cyclohexane--as well as extraction time, temperature, salt impact, pH and methanol addition. The best choice was diisopropyl ether, 50 degrees C, 30 min and an addition of 3 g of sodium chloride at pH 2 for polar compounds.
