Early nutritional management including fortified human breastmilk is currently recommended to fulfil the energy demands and counterbalance risks associated to preterm birth. However, little is known about the potential adverse effects of exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) carried in human milk on preterm infant growth. We conducted a pilot study proving the application of an integrative analytical approach based on mass spectrometry (MS) coupled to advanced statistical models, favouring the comprehensive molecular profiling to support the identification of multiple biomarkers.

Selenoprotein P (SePP) is involved in the protection against diseases. The present study is the first investigation of the effect of selenium supplementation on plasma selenium and expression of SEPP1 in mRNA and protein levels based on metabolic syndrome (MetS), in individuals suffering from coronary artery diseases. In this clinical trial, 160 patients with angiographically documented stenosis of more than 75% in each vessel were enrolled.

Butyrate can improve gut functions, whereas histone deacetylase inhibitors might alleviate neurocognitive alterations. Our aim was to assess whether oral butyrate could modulate brain metabolism and plasticity and if this would relate to gut function. Sixteen pigs were subjected to sodium butyrate (SB) supplementation via beverage water or water only [control (C)].

Lithocholic bile acid inhibits lipogenesis and induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells.

Cell Oncol (Dordr)

February 2018

Faculté de Pharmacie, EA 2160 MMS - Institut Universitaire Mer et Littoral FR3473 CNRS, Centre de Recherche en Nutrition Humaine Ouest (CRNH Ouest), ULB Université de Nantes, Nantes, France.

Background: It has amply been documented that mammary tumor cells may exhibit an increased lipogenesis. Biliary acids are currently recognized as signaling molecules in the intestine, in addition to their classical roles in the digestion and absorption of lipids. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of lithocholic acid (LCA) on the lipogenesis of breast cancer cells.

Faculty of Pharmacy, EA 2160 MMS - «Institut Universitaire Mer et Littoral», FR3473 CNRS, «Centre de Recherche en Nutrition Humaine Ouest» (CRNH Ouest), UBL Nantes University, Nantes, France

Background/aim: Lipid rafts are cholesterol-enriched microdomains of the plasma membrane. Recent studies have underlined that their integrity is critical for cancer cell survival. Liver X receptor (LXR) has a central role in cellular cholesterol homeostasis and its stimulation inhibits proliferation of several cancer cell lines.

Perinatal malnutrition is associated with low birth weight and an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome in adulthood. Modification of food intake (FI) regulation was observed in adult rats born with intrauterine growth retardation induced by maternal dietary protein restriction during gestation and maintained restricted until weaning. Gastrointestinal peptides and particularly cholecystokinin (CCK) play a major role in short-term regulation of FI by relaying digestive signals to the hindbrain the vagal afferent nerve (VAN).

Improving knowledge about breast cancer etiology is crucial in order to propose prevention strategies for this pathology. Gut microbiota is involved in numerous physiopathological situations including cancers. Although its potential involvement in breast cancer through the alteration of the enterohepatic circulation of estrogens and/or the metabolism of phytoestrogens has been discussed for some time, it remains to be demonstrated.
