We investigated the effect of two oral (p.o.) doses of cicletanine (5 and 30 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks on urinary excretion (UKE), renal concentration (RKC) of kallikrein, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha urinary excretion of stroke-prone (SP) spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) rats submitted to a high sodium intake (1%).

A solid-phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for determining human serum cystatin C is described. In 50 normal samples, cystatin C concentration was 1247 +/- 224 micrograms/L (mean +/- SD) which is in agreement with previously reported levels. Serum levels of cystatin C and beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2-M) were investigated in a time-course study during the development of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

Urinary kallikrein excretion (UKE) was measured in 20 patients before and after hemodialysis (HD). When compared to the values of normal subjects (136 +/- 56 micrograms/24 h, n = 100), UKE was decreased in all patients before HD (6.6 +/- 5.
