Three enterococcal isolates, CCRI-16620, CCRI-16986(T) and CCRI-16985(T), originating from water were characterized using morphological, biochemical and molecular taxonomic methods. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis classified all three strains in the Enterococcus faecalis species group. The phylogenetic tree of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the three isolates form two separate branches.

The present experiments sought the effect of chronic treatment with 17β-estradiol on striatal dopaminergic activity and the Akt/GSK3 signaling pathway in the brain of monkeys. Eight female monkeys (Macacca fascicularis) were ovariectomized (OVX) and a month later, half received a month treatment with 17β-estradiol and the other with vehicle. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease of the pulmonary vasculature characterized by constricted and remodeled pulmonary arteries. This phenomenon is associated with enhanced pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells proliferation and suppressed apoptosis, metabolism shift, inflammation, and several other features that are considered as hallmarks of cancer. Since oncogenes, tumor suppressors, and miRNAs are the major regulators of signaling in the cancer phenotype, we studied if the same type of regulation is operative in PAH.

In Na(+) appetite neurobiology, it is essential to investigate whether endogenous opioids modulate the output of the neural substrates that are involved in both the detection and integration of Na(+) deficiency and the motivational aspect of Na(+) intake. Thus, evaluating the recruitment dynamics of enkephalin (ENK)-containing and/or mu-opioid receptor (μ-OR)-expressing neurons in close correlation with the hydromineral state of the rat might provide useful information regarding the role of the opioid system in regulating the central network that controls water and Na(+) intake. Furosemide was used to deplete both fluid volume and the Na(+) content of the extracellular fluid (ECF) compartment when combined with water repletion and a short-term Na(+)-free diet.

Background: Zoledronic acid is an intravenous once yearly bisphosphonate that has been shown to be effective and safe in improving BMD (bone mineral density) and reducing fracture risk in controlled clinical trials. IVORY is a Canadian post marketing study aiming at assessing real-life effectiveness, health care resource utilization, safety and compliance to treatment with zoledronic acid in comparison to orally administered bisphosphonates (OBP).
Methods: IVORY is a prospective two cohort observational study of patients treated with zoledronic acid or OBP.

Chronic recurrent pain results in brain reorganization for cortical sensory and motor representation of muscles. This review supports the hypothesis that maladaptive plasticity in chronic low back pain patients could be associated with disorders of volitional activation of trunk/pelvis muscles and alterations of their anticipatory motor patterns for postural control. This is actually observed for the transversus abdominis muscle, an abdominal muscle that stabilizes the lumbosacral spine against external and internal postural perturbations.

Cytohesin-1 is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for ADP ribosylation factor 6 (Arf6) in human blood neutrophils and differentiated PLB-985 neutrophil-like cells. Cytohesin-1 regulates adhesion and the transendothelial migration of monocytes, dendritic cells and T lymphocytes through activation of the β2 integrin LFA-1. Arginine vasopressin (AVP), one of the most important hormones involved in hydromineral homeostasis, is secreted by hypothalamic magnocellular neurons (MCNs). Here, we implemented two critical parameters for MCN physiology into a Hodgkin-Huxley simulation of the MCN. By incorporating the mechanosensitive channel (MSC) responsible for osmodetection and the synaptic inputs whose frequencies are modulated by changes in ambient osmolality into our model, we were able to develop an improved model with increased physiological relevance and gain new insight into the determinants of the firing patterns of AVP magnocellular neurons.

The nucleotide exchange factor cytohesin-1 was previously reported to interact with the cytoplasmic domains of the integrin β-chain common to all β(2) integrins such as LFA-1 and Mac-1. We show here that cytohesin-1, which contributes to fMLF-induced functional responses in PMNs through activation of Arf6, restrains the activation of the β(2) integrin Mac-1 (αMβ(2)) in PMNs or dcAMP-differentiated PLB-985 cells. We found that the cytohesin-1 inhibitor SecinH3 or siRNA increased cell adhesion to immobilized fibrinogen and fMLF-mediated conformational changes of Mac-1, monitored using mAb CBRM1/5, specific for the activation epitope of the αM subunit.

The existence of a sex difference in Parkinson's disease (PD) is observed as related to several variables, including susceptibility of the disease, age at onset, and symptoms. These differences between men and women represent a significant characteristic of PD, which suggest that estrogens may exert beneficial effects against the development and the progression of the disease. This paper reviews the neuroprotective and neuromodulator effects of 17β-estradiol and progesterone as compared to androgens in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic (NSDA) system of both female and male rodents.

Although phosphatidic acid (PA) regulates a wide variety of physiological processes, its targets remain poorly characterized in human neutrophils. By co-sedimentation with PA-containing vesicles we identified several PA-binding proteins including vesicle amine transport protein-1 (VAT-1), Annexin A3 (ANXA3), Rac2, Cdc42 and RhoG in neutrophil cytosol. Except for ANXA3, protein binding to PA-containing liposomes was calcium-independent.
