Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD (GRIAC), University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Early pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as propellants, which harmed the ozone layer, leading to their phase-out under the 1987 Montreal Protocol.
  • Current pMDIs now use hydrofluoroalkanes (HFAs), like HFA-134a, which do not deplete ozone but contribute to global warming, prompting a gradual reduction in their use.
  • Instead of switching to dry powder inhalers (DPIs), which may not be suitable for all patients, an alternative is to reformulate pMDIs to use low-global warming potential propellants like HFA-152a, addressing environmental impact while considering patient

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated how the antioxidant capacity and inflammation potential of maternal diets during the last three months of pregnancy could influence the risk of allergic and respiratory diseases in children.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 9,679 mother-child pairs, measuring the dietary antioxidant capacity and inflammatory potential using various indices.
  • Results indicated that a diet high in antioxidants was linked to a lower risk of 'early wheeze without asthma,' while a pro-inflammatory diet correlated with a higher risk of 'asthma only,' suggesting maternal diet impacts children's respiratory health to some extent.

October 2024

APHP Sorbonne Université, INSERM, UMRS1158 Neurophysiologie Respiratoire Expérimentale Et Clinique, 47-83 Boulevard de L'Hôpital, 75013, Paris, France.

Introduction And Objectives: Dyspnea is associated with fear and intense suffering and is often assessed using visual analog scales (VAS) or numerical rating scales (NRS). However, the physiological correlates of such ratings are not well known. Using the voluntary breath-holding model of induced dyspnea, we studied healthy volunteers to investigate the temporal relationship between dyspnea, the neural drive to breathe assessed in terms of involuntary thoracoabdominal movements (ITMs) and neurovegetative responses.

Inserm U1046, Physiology and experimental Medicine: Heart-Muscle UMR CNRS 9214, Unité d'Exploration Fonctionnelle Pédiatrique, Université de Montpellier, CHU de Montpellier, Montpellier, France.

In paediatrics, the pulmonary function test (PFT) is most often performed to support the diagnosis or in follow-up of asthma patients. Whatever the pathology responsible for respiratory symptoms and/or functional impairment, repeated PFTs make it possible to establish a prognosis (pulmonary function trajectories…) and to orient preventive interventions. PFT can be performed routinely from the age of three years, provided that the following requirements are met: suitable techniques and equipment, staff trained to apply the techniques and to receive young children, reference values for each technique indicating the limits of normal values and of between-test significant variation.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with severe eosinophilic asthma often switch from one biologic treatment to another when their current medication isn't effective, but it's unclear whether switching to a different class (anti-IL-4R) or another drug in the same class (anti-IL-5/5R) is better.
  • In a study using data from a large asthma cohort, researchers compared the outcomes of patients who switched to either anti-IL-4R mAb or a different anti-IL-5/5R after not responding to their initial treatment.
  • Results showed no significant difference in asthma control improvement at six months, but the anti-IL-4R group had a more notable reduction in corticosteroid use, suggesting it might
