Decellularized vascular scaffolds are promising materials for vessel replacements. However, despite the natural origin of decellularized vessels, issues such as biomechanical incompatibility, immunogenicity risks and the hazards of thrombus formation, still need to be addressed. In this study, we coated decellularized vessels obtained from porcine carotid arteries with poly (ethylmethacrylate-co-diethylaminoethylacrylate) (8g7) with the purpose of improving endothelial coverage and minimizing platelet attachment while enhancing the mechanical properties of the decellularized vascular scaffolds.

Background: Pathologic lymph node staging is becoming a deficient method in the demanding molecular era. Stage I-II (pN0) colorectal cancer patients are surgically treated although up to 25 % will eventually die from disease recurrence. Lymph node (LN) status is an independent prognostic factor in colorectal cancer (CRC), and molecular tumour detection in LN of early-stage CRC patients is associated with an increased risk of disease recurrence and poor survival. This prospective multicentre study aimed to determine the relationship between LN molecular tumour burden and conventional high-risk factors in stage I-II colon cancer patients.

Background: There are several case reports of patients with narcolepsy and schizophrenia, but a systematic examination of the association of both disorders has not been done. The aim of this work is to assess the frequency of narcolepsy with cataplexy in a large consecutive series of adult patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
Methods: We screened 366 consecutive patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder with a sleep questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepines scale (ESS) exploring narcoleptiform symptoms.

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) act as cofactors worsening the allergic reactions induced by food allergens.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of both lysine acetylsalicylate (L-ASA) (non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor) and valdecoxib (selective COX-2 inhibitor) in basophils activated by peach lipid transfer protein (Pru p 3) in patients with food-dependent NSAID-induced anaphylaxis (FDNIA).
Methods: Twenty Pru p 3-allergic patients with FDNIA group, eleven peach anaphylaxis not exacerbated by NSAIDs (no-NSAID group) and 5 healthy volunteers were recruited.

An expert group from the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC, for its acronym in Spanish) and the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM, for its acronym in Spanish) have reviewed the main aspects to be considered when evaluating patients with solid cancer and infectious complications contained in this article. Recommendations have, therefore, been put forth regarding the prophylaxis of the most prevalent infections in these patients, the use of vaccines, measures to control infection through vascular catheters, and preventing infection in light of certain surgical maneuvers. The following is a revision of the criteria for febrile neutropenia management and the use of colony-stimulating factors and closes with several guidelines for treating the cancer patient with serious infection.

Introduction: Vitamin K antagonists were the only oral anticoagulants available for several decades, but they require frequent coagulation monitoring and dose adjustment. The direct oral anticoagulants rivaroxaban , dabigatran, apixaban, and, most recently, edoxaban have been approved for the management of specific thromboembolic indications.
Areas Covered: This review will provide a brief overview of the cell-based coagulation model, the main determinants of arterial and venous thrombosis, and the pharmacological rationale and clinical evidence for the different dosing regimens of rivaroxaban.

A group of experts from the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC) and the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) have reviewed in this paper the main aspects to be considered in the evaluation of patients with solid cancer and infectious diseases. They have established a series of recommendations on the prevention of the most prevalent infections in these patients, the use of vaccines, the control measures of vascular catheter infection and prevention of infections before certain surgical procedures. Also the criteria for management of febrile neutropenia and the use of colony-stimulating factors were revised.

Chronic pancreatitis lesions usually embrace both intraduct papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Patients at genetically-determined high risk of PDAC often harbor IPMN and/or chronic pancreatitis, suggesting IPMN, chronic pancreatitis and PDAC may share pathogenetic mechanisms. Chronic autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) may also herald PDAC.

Background: Aberrant crypt foci (ACF) are considered the first identifiable preneoplastic lesion in colorectal cancer (CRC), and have been proposed as a potential biomarker for CRC risk. Global DNA hypomethylation is an early event in colorectal carcinogenesis, and long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1) methylation status is a well-known surrogate marker for genome-wide DNA methylation levels. Despite the gradual increase in DNA hypomethylation in the adenoma-carcinoma sequence, LINE-1 methylation in ACF has never been studied.

Background: Food allergy caused by lipid transfer protein (LTP) from peach (Pru p 3) is frequently associated with sensitization to mugwort LTP (Art v 3). Although in vitro cross-reactivity is already well known, it has yet to be elucidated whether a pollen LTP can induce rhinitis.
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether mugwort LTP could elicit respiratory symptoms and whether a primary food LTP allergy could lead to a respiratory allergy.

Genome copy number changes (copy number variations: CNVs) include inherited, de novo and somatically acquired deviations from a diploid state within a particular chromosomal segment. CNVs are frequent in higher eukaryotes and associated with a substantial portion of inherited and acquired risk for various human diseases. CNVs are distributed widely in the genomes of apparently healthy individuals and thus constitute significant amounts of population-based genomic variation.

Argatroban is a synthetic small molecule derived from l-arginine with specific antithrombotic activity. Argatroban is a direct thrombin inhibitor that binds avidly and reversibly to the catalytic site of thrombin and that does not require other cofactors to exert its antithrombotic action.
