When grazing on heterogeneous pastures, herbivores may rely on food item generalization and categorization processes for reducing information processing while selecting their diet. The objective of this study was to assess the generalization of an aversion by grazing sheep for items differing by one or two criteria from an item against which they were negatively conditioned. Four items cultivated in pots were offered to the animals, resulting from the combination of an intrinsic criterion, i.

The temporal relationships between thyroid status and differentiation of liver, heart and different skeletal muscles were examined in 42 bovine fetuses from day 110 to day 260 of development using principal component analysis of the data. Plasma concentrations of reverse-triiodothyronine (rT(3)) and thyroxine (T(4)) increased during development from day 110 to day 210 or 260, respectively, whereas concentration of triiodothyronine (T(3)) and hepatic type-1 5'-deiodinase activity (5'D1) increased from day 180 onwards. On day 260, high T(4) and rT(3) and low T(3) concentrations were observed together with a mature 5'D1 activity.

Excessive dietary NaCl in association with a paucity of plant foods, major sources of K alkaline salts, is a common feature in Western eating habits which may lead to acid-base disorders and to Ca and Mg wasting. In this context, to evaluate the effects of potato, rich in potassium citrate, on acid-base homeostasis and mineral retention, Wistar rats were fed wheat starch (WS) or cooked potato (CP) diets with a low (0.5 %) or a high (2 %) NaCl content during 3 weeks.

Background: Vegetables and fruits are rich sources of a variety of nutrients, including vitamins (E and C), trace minerals, and dietary fibers, and many other classes of biologically active compounds such as carotenoids and polyphenols, which are often assumed to protect against degenerative pathologies such as cardiovascular diseases. Although potato is considered as a starchy food, it is also included in the category of vegetables by its micronutrient content.
Aim Of The Study: In the present study, we investigated in the rat the effect of a potato-enriched diet on lipid metabolism and antioxidant protection.

Mutations in the myostatin gene lead to double-muscling in cattle indicating that it is a negative regulator of the total number of muscle fibres. Myostatin expression was analysed by RT-PCR in three developing bovine muscles. It decreased during differentiation in Semitendinosus and Biceps femoris, and increased in the late differentiating Masseter during gestation.

Despite the prevalence of chronic inflammatory diseases in developed countries, few studies have considered the metabolic alterations observed in these disorders. To determine which perturbations in protein metabolism occur during chronic inflammation, and the consequences they have on nutritional requirements, a model of ulcerative colitis was adapted for use in adult rats. Adult Sprague-Dawley male rats (9 mo old) received dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in their drinking water at 50 g/L for 9 d, then at 20 g/L for 18 d.

An experiment was conducted with 42 growing Montbéliard steers to study the effect of feed restriction, followed by refeeding, on circulating concentrations of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) and on hepatic and muscle activities of 5'-deiodinase (5'D). At 9 mo of age, 21 steers were diet-restricted for 3 mo (ADG, 641 g/d), prior to a 4-mo compensatory growth period with ad libitum access to the same diet (ADG, 1,240 g/d). They were compared to 21 control steers continuously gaining 1,100 g/d between 9 and 16 mo of age.

Because of welfare concerns and increased labor efficiency, calves are increasingly housed in groups. To reduce variability in live weight within groups, farmers frequently regroup calves according to growth rate. We assessed the consequences of repeated regrouping and relocation on the welfare of 32 male Holstein calves housed in pairs.

The relationships between farmers' behavior toward veal calves, calves' responses to handling and transport, and veal meat quality were assessed. Two groups of 10 veal units were selected based on previous observed farmers' behavior toward the calves: one group consisted of farmers who had shown predominantly "positive" behavior toward the calves, and the other group of farmers had shown predominantly "negative" behavior. Calves were observed for their reactions to people at the unit, and 20 calves per veal unit were transported either directly to the slaughterhouse or subjected to additional transport consisting of a supplementary 20-min transport with additional unloading and loading.

This study investigated the influence of stockperson's behaviour and housing conditions on calves' behavioural reactions to people, and behavioural and physiological reactions to handling and short transport. Sixty-four Finnish Ayrshire male calves were used; half of them were housed in individual pens, the other half were housed in group pens of two calves. In both housing conditions half of the calves received minimal contact from the stockperson, while the other half were stroked on their necks and shoulders for 90s a day, after milk meals.

The endoglucanase activity of cells and extracellular culture fluid of Fibrobacter succinogenes S85 grown on glucose, cellobiose, soluble polysaccharides (beta-glucan, lichenan) and intact plant polysaccharides, was compared. The specific activity of cells grown on cellulose or forages was 6- to 20-fold higher than that of cells grown on soluble substrates, suggesting an induction of endoglucanases by the insoluble substrates. The ratios of cells to extracellular culture fluid endoglucanase activities measured in cultures grown on sugars or insoluble polysaccharides suggested that the endoglucanases induced by the insoluble polysaccharides remained attached to the cells.

It has been demonstrated previously that regularly stroking and letting calves suck fingers leads to less avoidance and more approach behavior of the calves toward people. To examine whether these positive contacts affect the welfare and productivity of calves and the quality of veal meat we used 22 veal calves housed in individual crates. Half of them received minimal contact with the stockperson (controls), and the other half were given additional gentle contacts around meals, by stroking the calves and allowing them to suck the stockperson's fingers, during the entire fattening period (21 wk).

We studied the importance of the stockperson's behavior on veal calf behavior using 22 veal calves housed in individual crates. Eleven calves received minimal contact from the stockperson, and the other 11 calves were stroked and allowed to suck the stockperson's fingers after each meal during the entire fattening period (21 wk). The effects of this additional contact with the stockperson on the calves' responses to people was studied, when in their home environment (crate) or outside their home environment (singly in a novel arena).

A method combining surface plasmon resonance and epitope mapping was developed to study the protein conformation at the oil/water interface of an emulsion. The conformation of beta-lactoglobulin stabilizing dodecane/water and miglyol/water interfaces was investigated using five anti-beta-lactoglobulin monoclonal antibodies. The developed method allows us to specifically recognize the emulsified beta-lactoglobulin at the surface of a sensor chip with good repeatability; i.

The enzymatic properties of two endoglucanases from Fibrobacter succinogenes, EGB and EGC, were analysed. EGB and EGC were purified from recombinant Escherichia coli cultures expressing their gene. The failure of purification of EGB by classical techniques led us to produce antipeptide antibodies that allowed immunopurification of the protein from E.

Satellite cells activity contributes to postnatal muscle growth. Herein, we have studied the respective influence of insulin and triiodothyronine (T3) on the proliferation and differentiation of primary bovine satellite cells isolated from Semitendinosus muscle of Montbéliard steers. Under basal conditions, satellite cells proliferated until the fifth day of culture, began to fuse into myotubes and expressed differentiation markers such as connectin, myogenin, and myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms.

Sarcopenia could result from the inability of an older individual to recover muscle lost during catabolic periods. To test this hypothesis, we compared the capacity of 5-day-refed 12- and 24-mo-old rats to recover muscle mass lost after 10 days without food. We measured gastrocnemius and liver protein synthesis with the flooding-dose method and also measured nitrogen balance, 3-methylhistidine excretion, and the gene expression of components of proteolytic pathways in muscle comparing fed, starved, and refed rats at each age.

Meat is a good support for bacterial growth and particularly for bacteria which are specific of meat and meat products. Little is known about the physiological and biochemical factors which could explain why some bacterial species are only isolated from meat. This review tentatively points out, from an ecological point of view, some of these factors in Gram negative and Gram positive micro-organisms influencing storage life.

Insulin plays a major role in the regulation of skeletal muscle protein turnover but its mechanism of action is not fully understood, especially in vivo during catabolic states. These aspects are presently reviewed. Insulin inhibits the ATP-ubiquitin proteasome proteolytic pathway which is presumably the predominant pathway involved in the breakdown of muscle protein.
