Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to distinguish between leptospirosis and dengue fever in patients, especially important during dengue outbreaks where misdiagnosis can lead to serious consequences.
  • Researchers compared 72 leptospirosis patients with 216 dengue fever patients, identifying specific signs and blood marker levels that could help in differentiation.
  • Elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), along with other blood parameters, proved to be effective indicators for diagnosing leptospirosis, suggesting that measuring CRP could be crucial in timely treatment decisions.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how environmental factors, particularly climate and flu outbreaks, affect sickle cell disease (SCD) patients in French Guiana, aiming to improve patient care and prevention strategies.* -
  • Data from emergency visits and hospital records from 2010 to 2016 revealed that lower temperatures and humidity increased incidents of vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC), while flu epidemics were linked to severe VOC cases.* -
  • The findings suggest that enhancing patient awareness of climate-related risks and promoting annual flu vaccinations can help reduce the frequency and severity of painful crises in SCD patients.*

Background: Prisoners in French Guiana, a French territory located in South America, have a HIV and hepatitis B prevalence of 4%. Body modifications such as penile implants, tattoos, and body piercings are common among detainees, increasing the risk of blood-borne virus transmission.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional randomised survey in which the primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of high risk 'bloody practices' (penile implants, tattoos, body piercings) in French Guiana's only correctional facility.

Disseminated histoplasmosis is a major opportunistic infection of HIV-infected patients, killing thousands in Latin America each year. Yet, it remains a neglected disease that is often confused with tuberculosis, for lack of simple, affordable, and rapid diagnostic tools. There is great heterogeneity in the level of histoplasmosis awareness.

Methods: We conducted an observational study in consecutive ZIKV-infected patients presenting with neurologic manifestations during the French West Indies 2016 outbreak.

Results: Eighty-seven patients, including 6 children, were enrolled.

Introduction: Numerous omics studies have been conducted to understand the molecular networks involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the pathophysiology is still not completely understood; new approaches that enable neuroscientists to better interpret the results of omics analysis are required.

Methods: We have developed advanced methods to analyze and visualize publicly-available genomics and genetics data. The tools include a composite clinical-neuropathological score for defining AD, gene expression maps in the brain, and networks integrating omics data to understand the impact of polymorphisms on AD pathways.

Background: Histoplasmosis is among the main acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining conditions in endemic areas. Although histoplasmosis has a worldwide distribution, histoplasmosis-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) is rarely reported. This study aimed to describe the incidence and features of histoplasmosis-associated IRIS in a cohort of PLHIV.

Background: In April 2017, Suriname's Ministry of Health alerted French Guiana's Regional Health Agency (RHA) about an increase of imported malaria cases among people coming from an illegal gold mining site called Sophie, in French Guiana, a French overseas territory located in the Amazonian forest.

Methods: Due to safety issues and the remoteness of Sophie, the RHA requested the collaboration of the French Armed Forces for the epidemiological investigation. A medical unit, and six soldiers to ensure the security of the mission, were transported by helicopter.

[Pediatric Morbidity of a Native American Village in French Guiana (2009-2016)].

Bull Soc Pathol Exot

Inserm 1424, centre d'investigation clinique Antilles-Guyane, centre hospitalier de Cayenne, av. des Flamboyants, F-97300 Cayenne, Guyane.

The situation of the Amerindian village of Camopi in French Guiana is particular because of its geographical isolation and its socio-cultural environment. Does this unique context affect the morbidity of the children? This study describes the morbidity of children aged 0-5 years in Camopi. The study population included all the children living in Camopi, born between 01/01/2009 and 31/12/2013.

Background: French Guiana (FG) was the first country in South America to declare chikungunya virus infection (CHIKV). The outbreak affected about 16,000 persons between February 2014 and October 2015, with several atypical cases, but only two fatal cases. We aimed to describe the clinical presentation of patients hospitalized for CHIKV infection, to estimate and identify risk factors of unusual and severe forms in adult patients.

Clinical characteristics and predictive score of dengue vs. chikungunya virus infections.

Background: Chikungunya (CHIKV) and dengue viruses (DENV) are two arboviruses with epidemic potential and similar clinical presentations. The potential life-threatening risk associated with DENV justifies an immediate biological assessment and medical follow-up which may be delayed for CHIKV.

Objectives: To compare the clinical variables that would help differentiate patients infected with CHIKV or DENV, and then to compute a predictive score.

Dengue fever is an increasing problem worldwide, but consequences during pregnancy remain unclear. Much of the available literature suffers from methodological biases that compromise the validity of clinical recommendations. We conducted a matched cohort study during an epidemic in French Guiana to compare events and pregnancy outcomes between two paired groups of pregnant women: women having presented with symptomatic dengue during pregnancy (n = 73) and women having had neither fever nor dengue during pregnancy (n = 219).

Article Synopsis
  • The study estimates that 38 to 63% of the general population has been exposed to chikungunya virus (CHIKV) after epidemics, with significant long-term effects despite low fatality rates.
  • Conducted at Cayenne General Hospital in French Guiana, the study tracked chronic musculoskeletal pain in patients with confirmed CHIKV infections over 3 and 6 months, finding that 40.2% and 31.3% experienced such pain, respectively.
  • The findings suggest that while chronic pain following CHIKV infection is prevalent, it appears to be less severe in the Amazonian region compared to affected population in the Indian Ocean islands, where the overall demographic is older.

Background: Given the great efforts put into the strategic objective of reducing the proportion of HIV-infected patients that are undiagnosed, the aim of the present study was to review the temporal trends between 1997 and 2016 for median estimates of infection duration and median CD4 count at diagnosis for the main patient origins in French Guiana.

Methods: CD4 cell count at HIV sero-conversion and square root of CD4 cell decline were obtained using the CD4 decline in a cohort of HIV-infected persons in the UK, fitting random effect (slope and intercept) multilevel linear regression models. Multivariate analysis used robust regression for modeling the delay between estimated HIV seroconversion and diagnosis and quantile regression for CD4 at HIV diagnosis.

Background: In order to compute the continuum of care for French Guiana, it is necessary to estimate the total number of persons living with HIV. The main objective was to determine how many persons were infected with HIV and how many were unaware of it.

Methods: We used 2 different models to calculate the total number of persons infected with HIV: Spectrum's AIM module using CSAVR to compute incidence from case registration and vital statistics; and the ECDC model from the French Guiana HIV cohort data.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of infantile Pompe disease (IPD) in French Guiana, a French overseas territory, by combining a retrospective case records study and a prospective anonymous genotyping in a sample of mothers followed in the two major maternity units of French Guiana.

Methods: We identified 19 newborns with IPD born within a 13-year-period in French Guiana, corresponding to 1/4528 births. All children were born within the African-American Maroon (Bushinengue) community originating from slaves who settled along the Maroni river in the 19th century.
