Background: The effects on gait and posture of balneotherapy in fallers are unknown. We assessed the effects on physical functioning and fear of falling of a balneotherapy program alone or combined with a physical activity and educational program in older adult fallers.

Methods: A multicenter randomized controlled trial enrolled patients aged 65 or older referred to a 3-week balneotherapy program, and screened for risk of falling (a history of falls in the last year and a timed up and go test or a five chair rising test >12 sec or a 4-meter walk test >4 sec).

Nutrition-Diabetes Department, University Hospital of Montpellier, Montpellier, France; PhyMedExp, University of Montpellier, INSERM U1046, CNRS UMR 9214, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the cardiovascular risk in patients with type 1 diabetes, specifically looking at how well they achieve target LDL-cholesterol levels, which are important for reducing heart-related health issues.
  • Researchers included 441 patients, dividing them into high risk (HR) and very high risk (VHR) categories, and examined factors that influenced whether they reached their LDL-c targets, referencing different guidelines from 2016 and 2019.
  • Results revealed that only a small percentage of both HR (35.3%) and VHR (17.4%) patients met their LDL-c targets, suggesting that improved management of cardiovascular risk factors is necessary to lower complications in these individuals.

Article Synopsis
  • Weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is often due to issues like the stretching of the gastro-jejunal connection. The transoral outlet reduction (TORe) procedure is a less invasive option to address this.
  • A study involving 73 patients evaluated the effectiveness of the TORe procedure combined with standard nutrition/behavioral management versus standard management alone. Results showed participants who underwent TORe had significantly higher excess weight loss at 12 months (13.5% vs. -0.77%).
  • While TORe showed promising weight loss results, it also had a notable rate of adverse events (20%), including severe complications like perforations, indicating it carries risks even though it's minimally invasive.
