Background: Opioid-related mortality is a rising public health concern in France, where opioids were in 2021 implicated in 75% of overdose deaths. Opioid substitution treatment (OST) was implicated in almost half of deaths related to substance and drug abuse. Although naloxone could prevent 80% of these deaths, there are a number of barriers to the distribution of take-home naloxone (THN) among opioid users in France.

Promotive social protection programs aim to increase income and capabilities and could help address structural drivers of HIV-vulnerability like poverty, lack of education and gender inequality. Unemployed and out-of-school young women bear the brunt of HIV infection in Botswana, but rarely benefit from such economic empowerment programs. Using a qualitative exploratory study design and a participatory research approach, we explored factors affecting perceived program benefit and potential solutions to barriers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review investigates the effectiveness of brachytherapy (BT) in treating early-stage oral cavity cancer (OCC), focusing on various outcomes like local control, overall survival, and safety.
  • - Using the SPIDER framework, researchers analyzed 517 articles but included only 7 studies with 456 patients, determining that BT leads to promising five-year local control, disease-free survival, and overall survival rates ranging from 50-100%.
  • - The conclusion indicates that BT is particularly effective for specific early-stage cancers in the oral cavity and presents favorable functional and safety profiles, especially for certain types of tumors.

Background: In 2016, two Canadian hospitals participated in a quality improvement (QI) program, the International Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Collaborative, and sought to adapt and implement a transition coach intervention (TCI). Both hospitals were challenged to provide optimal continuity of care for an increasing number of older adults. The two hospitals received initial funding, coaching, educational materials, and tools to adapt the TCI to their local contexts, but the QI project teams achieved different results.

Two-dimensional (2-D) plain radiographs may be insufficient for the evaluation of distal radial malunion, as it is a three-dimensional (3-D) deformity. This study introduced a 3-D measuring method that outputs radial inclination, ulnar variance, palmar tilt and axial rotation. To this end, a standardized and clearly defined coordinate system was constructed that allowed 3-D measurements closely resembling the conventional 2-D method in 35 patients.

Background: Acne scarring is an unfortunate sequela affecting up to 95% of patients with acne and carries profound psychosocial impact. Both nonablative fractional lasers (NAFL) and microneedling with radiofrequency (MNRF) have demonstrated comparable efficacy in the treatment of atrophic acne scars.

Objective: To determine whether alternating NAFL and MNRF is superior to NAFL alone in the treatment of atrophic acne scars.

Chronic pain is a risk factor for incident Alzheimer's disease: a nationwide propensity-matched cohort using administrative data.

Front Aging Neurosci

September 2023

Service de Pharmacologie Médicale, Direction de la Recherche Clinique et de L'Innovation, Université Clermont Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Introduction: Chronic pain (CP) is one of the most disabling conditions in the elderly and seems to be a risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Only one study, using national administrative health databases, assessed and demonstrated that chronic pain (all types of pain) was a risk factor for dementia, but without assessing the impact of pain medications.

Method: To assess the impact of all types of chronic pain and the long-term use of pain medications on the person-years incidence of ADRD, a retrospective nationwide healthcare administrative data study was performed using the national inter-regime health insurance information system (SNIIRAM) to the French national health data system (SNDS).

A major challenge in modelling the decorporation of actinides (An), such as americium (Am), with DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid) is the fact that standard biokinetic models become inadequate for assessing radionuclide intake and estimating the resulting dose, as DTPA perturbs the regular biokinetics of the radionuclide. At present, most attempts existing in the literature are empirical and developed mainly for the interpretation of one or a limited number of specific incorporation cases. Recently, several approaches have been presented with the aim of developing a generic model, one of which reported the unperturbed biokinetics of plutonium (Pu), the chelation process and the behaviour of the chelated compound An-DTPA with a single model structure.

Scope: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) play a crucial role in the transcriptional regulation of various genes which can contribute to metabolic disorders. Although sulforaphane (SFN), a natural HDAC inhibitor, has been reported to alleviate obesity in humans and mice, the specific mechanisms and how HDACs contribute to SFN's anti-obesity effects remain unclear.

Methods And Results: Oral administration of SFN in mice fed high-fat diet increases peroxisome proliferator activating receptor γ coactivator (PGC1α)-induced mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle.
