The synthesis of fibrinogen in the liver is drastically enhanced during the inflammatory process. Two factors are involved: glucocorticoids and the hepatocyte stimulating factor which is identical with interleukin 6 (Il6), also called interferon beta 2. The function of the 5'-flanking region of the human beta-fibrinogen (beta-Fg) gene has been studied by deletion analysis with the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) gene as a transient expression vector.

Microtubules, ordinarily cold-labile structures, are made entirely resistant to cold temperature by the presence of substoichiometric amounts of STOP (stable tubule only polypeptide), a microtubule-associated protein. We have produced a monoclonal antibody which specifically recognizes a 145-kDa protein previously implicated in STOP activity in rat brain extracts. An antibody affinity column removes both the 145-kDa protein and STOP activity from solution.

When the seminal root system of 14-day-old corn (Zea mays cv. Dekalb 202) was subjected to O(2) stress, nodal roots with well developed cortical air spaces (aerenchyma) grew into the deoxygenated solution. Microscopic examination showed that there was extensive breakdown of cells in the midcortex of these roots, while the stele, endodermis, and inner layer of cortical cells remained complete, as did the outer layers of the cortex and the epidermis.
