Background: Although bed baths are known to cause pain, the engendered pain frequency and intensity remain poorly studied. This prospective, observational study was undertaken to examine prospectively, on a given day, patients' bed bath-associated pain in the general in-hospital population.
Methods: Eight external investigators observed 166 bed baths given in 23 units in 5 hospitals.

We explored whether ankle torque variability or plantar perceptual threshold explains human balance control more effectively. We hypothesized that ankle torque variance is a better indicator of center of pressure (COP) velocity variance than plantar perceptual sensitivity. Two conditions were tested: loaded (23-kg vest added) and unloaded, as loading should diminish plantar sensitivity and increase COP velocity variability.

Background: Chronic pain affects approximately 30% of the general population, severely degrades quality of life and professional life, and leads to additional health care costs. Moreover, the medical follow-up of patients with chronic pain remains complex and provides only fragmentary data on painful daily experiences. This situation makes the management of patients with chronic pain less than optimal and may partly explain the lack of effectiveness of current therapies.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is commonly used to establish three-dimensional mapping of white-matter bundles in the supraspinal central nervous system. DTI has also been the subject of many studies on cranial and peripheral nerves. This non-invasive imaging technique enables virtual dissection of nerves in vivo and provides specific measurements of microstructural integrity.

Background: Several studies have focused on the use of triptan and the risk of acute vascular events but the existence of such association is still debated and has never been quantified in patients over 65 years. To assess whether triptan use among older is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for acute vascular events.
Methods: A propensity score-matched cohort study was designed using the French national health insurance database linked to hospital stays.

Aim: Patients with chronic non-cancer pain are referred to pain centres to improve their pain treatment. The discontinuation of pain medications in case of poor efficacy can be difficult to accept for patients, particularly opioid analgesics. Previous research has described that from the patients' perspective, the psychological relief of a negative effect of chronic pain and withdrawal symptoms of prescription opioids represent drivers of persistent use and first stage of opioid use disorder, despite insufficient pain relief.

Memories of painful events constitute the basis for assessing patients' pain. This study explores the brain oscillatory activity during short-term memorization of a nociceptive stimulus. High-density EEG activity (128 electrodes) was recorded in 13 healthy subjects during a match-to-sample sensory discrimination task, whereby participants compared the intensity of a thumb-located electric shock (S2) with a prior stimulus to the same location (S1) delivered 8-10 s earlier.

Background: The combination dextropropoxyphene/paracetamol (DXP/P) was the most prescribed opioid analgesic until its withdrawal in 2011.
Objectives: This study investigated dispensations of analgesics in chronic users of DXP/P during the 18 months following its withdrawal.
Methods: A cross-sectional study repeated yearly was conducted by using the French reimbursement database from 2006 to 2015.

Introduction: Chronic pain (CP) is one of the most disabling conditions in the elderly and seems to be a risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Only one study, using national administrative health databases, assessed and demonstrated that chronic pain (all types of pain) was a risk factor for dementia, but without assessing the impact of pain medications.
Method: To assess the impact of all types of chronic pain and the long-term use of pain medications on the person-years incidence of ADRD, a retrospective nationwide healthcare administrative data study was performed using the national inter-regime health insurance information system (SNIIRAM) to the French national health data system (SNDS).

The aim of the present study was to compare the analgesic effect of motor cortex stimulation using high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation or transcranial direct current stimulation and transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation in patients with complex regional pain syndrome. Thirty-three patients with complex regional pain syndrome were randomized to one of the three treatment groups (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, = 11; transcranial direct current stimulation, = 10; transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation, = 12) and received a series of 12 sessions of stimulation for 3 weeks (induction phase) and 11 sessions for 4 months (maintenance therapy). The primary end-point was the mean pain intensity assessed weekly with a visual numerical scale during the month prior to treatment (baseline), the 5-month stimulation period and 1 month after the treatment.

As part of an overall policy to improve pain management within healthcare establishments, their main mission is to help harmonize the practices and knowledge of healthcare professionals. They can carry out a wide range of activities, and there is currently considerable variability in the way they do so.

The concept of nursing consultation takes on its full meaning with people suffering from chronic pain. The Société française d'étude et de traitement de la douleur (French Society for the Study and Treatment of Pain), and more specifically its professional nursing commission, has drawn up a reference framework of consultation activities on which pain resource nurses (PRNs) can draw. This describes the various stages in the management of chronic pain patients.

Doctors, when facing patients suffering from chronic pain, are driven to the limits of their clinical practice, which essentially is based on a diagnostic interpretation of the patient's signs and symptoms, leading to the appropriate therapeutic intervention. A doctor's awareness of his own experience of helpless distress facing these patients is bound to occur and to make him address the issues of transference between him and his patient. Listening to the patient's narrative is essential.
