Background: Wound infection represents a frequent trouble following open saphenous vein harvesting in cardiac surgery. Platelets' growth factors are crucial for the healing process. Prophylactic platelet rich plasma (PRP) application on leg wound might reduce the incidence of saphenous vein harvest site infections in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).

Aims: The respective roles of oral anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) remain debated. ATLANTIS is an international, randomized, open-label, superiority trial comparing apixaban to the standard of care.
Methods And Results: After successful TAVI, 1500 patients were randomized (1:1) to receive apixaban 5 mg (2.

Both the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC/AHA) have recently released guidelines on the management of patients with secondary mitral regurgitation. This includes defining, classifying, and assessing the severity of secondary mitral regurgitation. These guidelines are also the first to incorporate the use of transcatheter edge-to-edge repair in decision-making based on recent studies.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has resulted in significant mortality and burdening of healthcare resources. While initially noted as a pulmonary pathology, subsequent studies later identified cardiovascular involvement with high mortalities reported in specific cohorts of patients. While cardiovascular comorbidities were identified early on, the exact manifestation and etiopathology of the infection remained elusive.

Background: PET/CT image quality is directly influenced by the F-18-FDG injected activity. The higher the injected activity, the less noise in the reconstructed images but the more radioactive staff exposition. A new FDA cleared software has been introduced to obtain clinical PET images, acquired at 25% of the count statistics considering US practices.

Cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading global cause of death, should increase by 40% by 2030, reaching close to 24 million deaths worldwide. Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, ahead of conduction disturbances and ventricular arrhythmias. Studies estimate that 7.

Background: Atrial fibrillation affects approximately 4% of the world's population and is one of the major causes of stroke, heart failure, sudden death, and cardiovascular morbidity. It can be difficult to diagnose when asymptomatic or in the paroxysmal stage, and its natural history is not well understood. New wearables and connected devices offer an opportunity to improve on this situation.

The function of metalloproteinases of the extracellular matrix and their inhibitors has emerged with a crucial role in valve diseases. Both the expression of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors are susceptible to modification in patients with severe mitral insufficiency. This process is due to substantial changes in the collagen structure during mechanical stress on the mitral valve leaflets.

Until recently, conventional mitral valve surgery has been the treatment of choice even in secondary mitral regurgitation. Recent evidence, however, advocates the use of transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER) of the mitral valve. This has been reflected by the change in guidelines of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, contributing to all major cellular processes. The importance of miRNAs in cardiac development, heart function, and valvular heart disease has been shown in recent years, and aberrant expression of miRNA has been reported in various malignancies, such as gastric cancer and breast cancer. Different from other fields of investigation, the role of miRNAs in cardiac tumors still remains difficult to interpret due to the scarcity publications and a lack of narrative focus on this topic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 is characterized by its severe respiratory effects. Data early on indicated an increased risk of mortality in patients with cardiovascular comorbidities. Early reports highlighted the multisystem inflammatory syndrome, cytokine storm, and thromboembolic events as part of the disease processes.

One of the hallmarks of the SARS-CoV-2 infection has been the inflammatory process that played a role in its pathogenesis, resulting in mortality within susceptible individuals. This uncontrolled inflammatory process leads to severe systemic symptoms via multiple pathways; however, the role of endothelial dysfunction and thrombosis have not been truly explored. This review aims to highlight the pathogenic mechanisms of these inflammatory triggers leading to thrombogenic complications.

Objectives: Report contemporary outcomes in patients included in the Mitragister registry and treated with transcatheter mitral valve implantation for failed surgical annuloplasty rings or deteriorated bioprosthesis.
Background: Midterm survival rates have been reported, but little is known about contemporary morbimortality endpoints.
Methods: The primary safety outcome was the technical success rate.

Background: Reports on effectiveness and safety after the implant of pulmonary autograft (PA) living tissue in Ross procedure, to treat both congenital and acquired disease of the aortic valve and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), show variable durability results. We undertake a quantitative systematic review of evidence on outcome after the Ross procedure with the aim to improve insight into outcome and potential determinants.
Methods: A systematic search of reports published from October 1979 to January 2021 was conducted (PubMed, Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase and Cochrane library) reporting outcomes after the Ross procedure in patients with diseased aortic valve with or without LVOT.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a complex clinical challenge, caused by a novel coronavirus, partially similar to previously known coronaviruses but with a different pattern of contagiousness, complications, and mortality. Since its global spread, several therapeutic agents have been developed to address the heterogeneous disease treatment, in terms of severity, hospital or outpatient management, and pre-existing clinical conditions. To better understand the rationale of new or old repurposed medications, the structure and host-virus interaction molecular bases are presented.

The 2016 American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) guidelines for the evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function reported a new algorithm to assess diastolic function and to estimate left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP). At least five to six different parameters were necessary to conclude, each of them with their own inter-observer variability. This article examines the reproducibility of each parameter of the algorithm and its influence on the final decision of the clinician.

Purpose: F-labeled fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with computed tomography (F-FDG PET-CT) data in HIV-associated Hodgkin lymphoma (HIV-HL) are scarcely reported. In addition to the description of the characteristics of both baseline and interim F-FDG PET-CT examinations (PET1 and iPET, respectively), the aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of PET1 and previously identified clinical parameters in this population.
Patients And Methods: PET1 of 109 patients with HIV-HL, treated with doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine chemotherapy regimen since 2007, and 104 iPET were centrally reviewed.
