: We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of imaging biomarkers on 18F-FDG PET/CT in extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) patients undergoing first-line chemo-immunotherapy. In this multicenter and retrospective study, we considered two cohorts, depending on the type of first-line therapy: chemo-immunotherapy (CIT) versus chemotherapy alone (CT). All patients underwent baseline 18-FDG PET/CT before therapy between June 2016 and September 2021.

Introduction: Various definitions of very severe (VS) tricuspid regurgitation (TR) have been proposed based on the effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) or tricuspid coaptation gap (TCG). Because of the inherent limitations associated with the EROA, we hypothesized that the TCG would be more suitable for defining VSTR and predicting outcomes.

Materials And Methods: In this French multicentre retrospective study, we included 606 patients with ≥moderate-to-severe isolated functional TR (without structural valve disease or an overt cardiac cause) according to the recommendations of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.

SARS-CoV-2-Induced Myocarditis: A State-of-the-Art Review.

Viruses

April 2023

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH16 4SA, UK.

In this review, we investigated whether severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can directly cause myocarditis with severe myocardial damage induced by viral particles. A review of the major data published from 2020 to 2022 was performed by consulting the major databases alongside first-hand experiences that emerged from the cardiac biopsies and autopsy examinations of patients who died of SARS-CoV-2 infections. From this study, a significantly large amount of data suggests that the Dallas criteria were met in a residual percentage of patients, demonstrating that SARS-CoV-2 myocarditis was a rare clinical and pathological entity that occurred in a small percentage of subjects.

Sex-Based Difference in Aortic Dissection Outcomes: A Multicenter Study.

J Cardiovasc Dev Dis

March 2023

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Hôpitaux Universitaires Henri Mondor, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, 94000 Creteil, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates sex-specific differences in patients undergoing Type A Acute Aortic Dissection (TAAAD) repair, revealing that women tend to be older and have poorer pre-operative health compared to men.
  • Data was gathered from three cardiac surgery departments over a 16-year period, and statistical methods were used to analyze the influence of gender on surgical outcomes.
  • Despite significant differences in patient profiles, the study found no notable difference in long-term survival rates or postoperative complications between male and female patients, although women with high preoperative arterial lactate levels faced higher operative mortality.

Tricuspid valve (TV) surgery carries a high risk of atrioventricular block. In this report, we illustrate several options for managing conduction disorders after TV surgery. The choice of cardiac implantable devices must take account of several parameters such as surgical procedure, patient's rhythm and history, and etiology of TV disease.

Remote monitoring of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has become an expansive priority in many European countries, with nurses playing a central role in it. In France, a national survey for paramedics was set up to assess the organization of remote monitoring in the different institutions and to determine the paramedical role. A self-administered questionnaire (supplementary material), developed and validated by the College of Paramedics in partnership with the Working Group of Pacing and Electrophysiology of the French Society of Cardiology (SFC).

Distinctive Signs of Disease as Deterrents for the Endothelial Function: A Systematic Review.

Metabolites

March 2023

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH16 4SA, UK.

Endothelial integrity plays a major role in homeostasis and is responsive to the numerous endogenous factors released. While its functional role in vascular tone is well described, its role in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease is of interest as a potential therapeutic target. We performed a systematic review to provide an overview of new therapeutic and diagnostic targets for the treatment of coronary artery disease related to endothelial dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of subvalvular repair (SV-r) combined with restrictive annuloplasty (RA-r) for treating ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR), as current guidelines lack specific recommendations on this approach.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 96 patients with severe IMR undergoing either SV-r + RA-r or just RA-r, focusing on treatment failure rates and the long-term outcomes related to recurrent mitral regurgitation (MR) and heart remodeling.
  • Results showed that patients receiving the SV-r + RA-r combination had a significantly lower treatment failure rate and better outcomes at 5 years compared to those who only had RA-r, highlighting that SV-r enhances the durability of the surgical repair and

Objectives: The TRI-SCORE reliably predicts in-hospital mortality after isolated tricuspid valve surgery (ITVS) on native valve but has not been tested in the setting of redo interventions. We aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the TRI-SCORE for in-hospital mortality in patients with redo ITVS and to compare its accuracy with conventional surgical risk scores.

Methods: Using a mandatory administrative database, we identified all consecutive adult patients who underwent a redo ITVS at 12 French tertiary centres between 2007 and 2017.

Worsening Thrombotic Complication of Atherosclerotic Plaques Due to Neutrophils Extracellular Traps: A Systematic Review.

Biomedicines

January 2023

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH16 4SA, UK.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) recently emerged as a newly recognized contributor to venous and arterial thrombosis. These strands of DNA, extruded by activated or dying neutrophils, decorated with various protein mediators, become solid-state reactors that can localize at the critical interface of blood with the intimal surface of diseased arteries alongside propagating and amplifying the regional injury. NETs thus furnish a previously unsuspected link between inflammation, innate immunity, thrombosis, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular diseases.

Background: Functional tricuspid regurgitation (TR) appears frequently in the presence of left-sided heart valve diseases, combined with symptoms of heart failure, worsens if left untreated, and is associated with poor patient survival. Correct indications for surgery and the choice of suitable technique, which should be based on pathophysiology of disease are of utmost importance to ensure longevity and durability of repair; particularly given the risky nature of reoperations due to residual/recurrent TR.

Methods: A systematic review was performed using Embase, Ovid Medline, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Google to deepen knowledge of major and controversial aspects of the subject.
