Postbiotics for the management of obesity, insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes and NAFLD. Beyond microbial viability.

Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr

December 2024

Nutrition and Obesity Group, Department of Nutrition and Food Science, Faculty of Pharmacy and Lucio Lascaray Research Centre, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

Highly prevalent comorbidities associated with metabolic syndrome, such as abdominal obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and insulin-resistance/Type 2 diabetes (IR/T2D) share alterations in gut microbiota composition as a potential triggering factor. Recent studies put the attention in the potential usage of postbiotics (inactivated probiotics) on these metabolic alterations. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding the efficacy of postbiotic administration in both, preclinical and clinical studies, for the management of obesity, NAFLD and IR/T2D.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-front-fanged snakes (NFFS) have been largely neglected in snake venom research, leading to unclear assessments of their medical significance for human bites.
  • The review focuses on European NFFS, highlighting that while most bites cause mild symptoms, the genus Malpolon can result in more severe local and systemic effects.
  • It emphasizes the importance of professional medical evaluation for any bite from these snakes to ensure safety and aid in understanding their potential risks.

The comprehensive detection of new psychoactive substances, including synthetic cannabinoids along with their associated metabolites in biological samples, remains an analytical challenge. To detect these chemicals, untargeted approaches using appropriate bioinformatic tools such as molecular networks are useful, albeit it necessitates as a prerequisite the identification of a node of interest within the cluster. To illustrate it, we reported in this study the identification of synthetic cannabinoids and some of their metabolites in seized e-liquid, urine, and hair collected from an 18-year-old poisoned patient hospitalized for neuropsychiatric disorders.

Trans-ε-viniferin, a resveratrol dimer found mainly in grapevine wood, has shown protective capacities against hepatic steatosis in vivo. Nevertheless, this compound is very poorly bioavailable. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the potential anti-steatotic properties of 1 and 10 µM of trans-ε-viniferin and its four glucuronide metabolites in AML-12 cells treated with palmitic acid as an in vitro model of hepatic steatosis.

Bed bugs are pervasive global pests that have reemerged in the last 20 years as a significant public health concern, especially in densely populated urban areas. Beyond financial losses, expenses, inconvenience, and psychological distress, bed bug infestations often necessitate chemical management, posing poisoning risks to those with an infestation. The French Poison Control Centers recorded 1056 cases of exposure to bed bug insecticide products between 1999 and 2021.

Introduction: Cardiac glycosides comprise medications such as digoxin and digitoxin, plants, and even certain toad venoms. Intoxication with cardiac glycosides can lead to hemodynamic instability and cardiac arrest. With this narrative review, our objective was to determine if any therapy used in a near-cardiac arrest state due to cardiac glycoside poisoning could improve survival with favourable functional and neurological outcomes.

  • In 2023, two deaths in the U.S. were linked to uncooked morel mushrooms, marking a concerning increase in severe gastrointestinal toxicity reports associated with their consumption.
  • An analysis of cases from the French National Database showed that a significant percentage of morel exposure resulted in gastrointestinal (83.6%) and neurological (53.3%) symptoms, with some cases leading to shock and fatalities.
  • The shift from wild to cultivated morels in sales may contribute to more severe poisoning cases, emphasizing the need for cautious consumption and increased awareness about the risks, especially with raw or undercooked mushrooms.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of intensive care units (ICUs) and their organization in healthcare systems. However, ICU capacity and availability are ongoing concerns beyond the pandemic, particularly due to an aging population and increasing complexity of care. This study aimed to assess the current and future shortage of ICU physicians in France, ten years after a previous evaluation.

Analysis of homemade cannabis edibles by UHPLC-HRMS after standard addition method.

J Anal Toxicol

June 2024

Laboratoire de Toxicologie Biologique, Fédération de Toxicologie, Hôpital Lariboisière, APHP, 2 rue Ambroise Paré, Paris 75010, France.

With recent evolution of cannabis legalization around the world, cannabis edibles are booming, and determining their concentration in Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the regulated psychoactive substance, remains a challenge for toxicology laboratories, which must prove whether the product has legal status or not. Cannabinoids are a large family of structurally similar and lipophilic molecules, requiring dedicated pre-analytical methods, as well as efficient chromatographic separation to differentiate cannabinoid isomers which are distinguished by their psychoactive properties and their legal status. Here, we present two independent cases of cannabis edibles, for which we performed analysis of homemade cannabis chocolate cakes and of the resins and herbs used for cooking.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Consultation And Relational Empathy (CARE) measure for assessing medical students' empathy during Objective and Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), addressing the lack of a definitive tool for this purpose.
  • Researchers analyzed the CARE measure's psychometric properties and compared scores given by examiners and standardized patients (SPs) to 129 students, finding discrepancies in their evaluations.
  • Although the CARE measure had satisfactory overall properties, the inter-rater reliability was deemed poor, suggesting that the evaluators and the type of SP significantly impact the assessment of empathy in medical education.
