Feature-Based Molecular Network for New Psychoactive Substance Identification: The Case of Synthetic Cannabinoids in a Seized e-Liquid and Biological Samples.

The comprehensive detection of new psychoactive substances, including synthetic cannabinoids along with their associated metabolites in biological samples, remains an analytical challenge. To detect these chemicals, untargeted approaches using appropriate bioinformatic tools such as molecular networks are useful, albeit it necessitates as a prerequisite the identification of a node of interest within the cluster. To illustrate it, we reported in this study the identification of synthetic cannabinoids and some of their metabolites in seized e-liquid, urine, and hair collected from an 18-year-old poisoned patient hospitalized for neuropsychiatric disorders.

Glucuronide metabolites of trans-ε-viniferin decrease triglycerides accumulation in an in vitro model of hepatic steatosis.

Trans-ε-viniferin, a resveratrol dimer found mainly in grapevine wood, has shown protective capacities against hepatic steatosis in vivo. Nevertheless, this compound is very poorly bioavailable. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the potential anti-steatotic properties of 1 and 10 µM of trans-ε-viniferin and its four glucuronide metabolites in AML-12 cells treated with palmitic acid as an in vitro model of hepatic steatosis.

Trends in poisoning associated with the use of insecticides for bed bug infestations: a 20-year retrospective study in France.

Bed bugs are pervasive global pests that have reemerged in the last 20 years as a significant public health concern, especially in densely populated urban areas. Beyond financial losses, expenses, inconvenience, and psychological distress, bed bug infestations often necessitate chemical management, posing poisoning risks to those with an infestation. The French Poison Control Centers recorded 1056 cases of exposure to bed bug insecticide products between 1999 and 2021.

Antidote use for cardiac arrest or hemodynamic instability due to cardiac glycoside poisoning: A narrative review.

Introduction: Cardiac glycosides comprise medications such as digoxin and digitoxin, plants, and even certain toad venoms. Intoxication with cardiac glycosides can lead to hemodynamic instability and cardiac arrest. With this narrative review, our objective was to determine if any therapy used in a near-cardiac arrest state due to cardiac glycoside poisoning could improve survival with favourable functional and neurological outcomes.

Paraspecificity of Mexican antivipmyn TRI antivenom in envenomation by Chinese Protobothrops mangshanensis (Mangshan pit viper) in France: A case report and experimental neutralization of venom procoagulant effect.

This case report presents an exotic envenomation by a Chinese snake, Protobothrops mangshanensis. Its venom exhibited potent activity against plasma and fibrinogen, among other enzymatic activities. The patient initially presented with edema of the right upper limb, without tissue necrosis.

Inadequate intensive care physician supply in France: a point-prevalence prospective study.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of intensive care units (ICUs) and their organization in healthcare systems. However, ICU capacity and availability are ongoing concerns beyond the pandemic, particularly due to an aging population and increasing complexity of care. This study aimed to assess the current and future shortage of ICU physicians in France, ten years after a previous evaluation.

Hexahydrocannabinol poisoning reported to French poison centres.

Introduction: Hexahydrocannabinol is a hexahydro derivative of cannabinol. Poisoning with hexahydrocannabinol was first observed in Europe in May 2022.

Method: This is a retrospective observational study of cases of self-reported hexahydrocannabinol exposure reported to French poison centres between 1 January 2022 and 31 May 2023.

Exposure to ammonia solution due to substance use: a retrospective study from the French poison centres database (2009-2018).

Introduction: Ammonia solution (ammonium hydroxide) is used to convert cocaine hydrochloride to freebase cocaine. Due to its causticity, unintentional exposure to ammonia in a substance use context can result in injury. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of unintentional oral and buccal ammonia solution exposure in a substance use context.

Analysis of homemade cannabis edibles by UHPLC-HRMS after standard addition method.

With recent evolution of cannabis legalization around the world, cannabis edibles are booming, and determining their concentration in Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the regulated psychoactive substance, remains a challenge for toxicology laboratories, which must prove whether the product has legal status or not. Cannabinoids are a large family of structurally similar and lipophilic molecules, requiring dedicated pre-analytical methods, as well as efficient chromatographic separation to differentiate cannabinoid isomers which are distinguished by their psychoactive properties and their legal status. Here, we present two independent cases of cannabis edibles, for which we performed analysis of homemade cannabis chocolate cakes and of the resins and herbs used for cooking.

Pre-hospital triage of children at risk of oesophageal button battery impaction: the button battery impaction score.

Introduction: Button battery ingestion in children can be fatal if oesophageal perforation occurs. Such children require chest radiography in the emergency department to determine the button battery position and number. Current guidelines recommend that a button battery impacted in the oesophagus should be removed within two hours.

Resveratrol, ε-Viniferin, and Vitisin B from Vine: Comparison of Their In Vitro Antioxidant Activities and Study of Their Interactions.

The control of oxidative stress with natural active substances could limit the development of numerous pathologies. Our objective was to study the antiradical effects of resveratrol (RSV), ε-viniferin (VNF), and vitisin B (VB) alone or in combination, and those of a standardized stilbene-enriched vine extract (SSVE). In the DPPH-, FRAP-, and NO-scavenging assays, RSV presented the highest activity with an IC of 81.

Short message service as a tool for mass follow-up of patients requesting a poison centre: a retrospective comparative study in France.

Introduction: The short message service is an alternative to telephone follow-up of exposure cases reported to poison centres. The aim of this study was to compare the proportion of exposure cases successfully followed up and the respective cost of telephone and short message service follow-up between two poison centres, one using both methods of follow-up (Paris centre) and the other using telephone follow-up only (Nancy centre).

Methods: In 2021, we included cases eligible for short message service follow-up at both centres.

[Amatoxin-containing mushroom poisoning: An update].

Amatoxin-containing mushroom poisoning occurs after consumption of certain mushroom species, of the genera Amanita, Lepiota and Galerina. Amanita phalloides is the most implicated species, responsible for over more than 90% of mushroom-related deaths. The α-amanitin is responsible for most of the observed effects.
