PCV for oligodendroglial tumors: in search of prognostic factors for response and survival.

Can J Neurol Sci

August 2001

Department of Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology, Centre Universitaire de Santé de l'Estrie, Sherbrooke University, Québec, Canada.

Background: We report survival and pretreatment prognostic factors for survival and chemosensitivity in 53 oligodendrogliomas treated with PCV (procarbazine, lomustine and vincristine) chemotherapy.

Methods: A total of 53 patients with histologically proven oligodendroglioma, anaplastic oligodendroglioma or oligo-astrocytoma and treated with PCV were extracted from the London Regional Cancer Center database. A retrospective review was conducted to evaluate overall survival and pretreatment prognostic factors for survival and chemosensitivity.

Effects of aerobic physical exercise in the elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Arch Gerontol Geriatr

October 2000

Research Group in Diabetology, Centre de recherche clinique, Centre universitaire de Santé de l'Estrie, Quebec, Sherbooke, Canada

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of an aerobic physical exercise program in the treatment of a group of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in relation to metabolic control, physical capacity, quality of life (QOL) and attitudes toward diabetes. Patients were randomly assigned to either an experimental (n=19) or a control (n=20) group. The following measurements were conducted at baseline and after week 16: glycosylated hemoglobin (hbA1c), fructosamine, 3 h oral glucose tolerance test, treadmill test (Balke-Naughton), and a questionnaire on QOL and attitudes toward DM.

De novo synthesis of proteinase 3 by cytokine primed circulating human polymorphonuclear neutrophils and mononuclear cells.

J Rheumatol

October 2000

Department of Medicine, Centre universitaire de santé de l'Estrie, Faculty of Medicine, Université de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.

Objective: When polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and peripheral blood monocytes (PBMC) are stimulated with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), preexisting granule stored proteinase 3 (PR3) is translocated to the surface of their plasma membrane. We investigated whether PR3 gene reactivation and new PR3 protein production were also features of priming by cytokine.

Methods: Normal human PMN and PBMC were isolated and stimulated in vitro with TNF-alpha.

Background: Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease with a pharmacological approach to dyslipidemias is controversial. Little is known about the clinical management by general practitioners in this area.

Objectives: To evaluate the patterns of treatment of patients in primary prevention who were entered in the FAmily Medicine, Université de Sherbrooke (FAMUS) register and to calculate the probability of their receiving a hypolipidemic agent according to the presence of various risk profiles.

The in vitro post-antibiotic effect (PAE) and batericidal activity of cefditoren was compared to that of cefixime, cefuroxime, loracarbef, cefaclor, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, clarithromycin, azithromycin, erythromycin, and ciprofloxacin against ATCC culture strains and clinical respiratory isolates. A PAE > 1 h was observed for cefditoren and generally for the macrolides against Streptococcus pneumoniae, beta-lactamase-negative Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes, whereas the other beta-lactams showed mixed results. Cefditoren was the only beta-lactam showing significant bactericidal activity (>3 log reduction of viable cells) within 4 h against penicillin-resistant S.

Purpose Of The Study: In the literature, the frequency of postoperative compressive spinal epidural hematomas (SEH) appearing very low, we conducted the present study to determine the frequency of this complication in their unit and look for causative and predisposing factors.

Material And Methods: Among the 1,487 spinal operations performed in our unit between September 1997 and August 1998, fifteen patients had postoperative compressive SEH; their files were retrospectively analyzed regarding the initial intervention, postoperative period, revision operation and neurologic follow-up.

Results: Five women and ten men were involved ranging in age from 47 to 70 years (average, 59.

The COMT inhibitors, tolcapone and entacapone, are a new class of Parkinson's medications. By inhibiting the enzyme catechol-o-methyl-transferase (COMT), they prevent peripheral degradation of levodopa, allowing a higher concentration to cross the blood-brain barrier. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown that both tolcapone and entacapone significantly prolong the elimination half life, and increase the area under the curve of levodopa without increasing C max.
