The respiratory tract harbours microorganisms of the normal host microbiota which are also capable of causing invasive disease. Among these, Neisseria meningitidis a commensal bacterium of the oropharynx can cause meningitis, a disease with epidemic potential. The oral microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining respiratory health.

Background: Malaria remains a threat in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, where it is endemic and represents the leading cause of hospital consultations, morbidity and mortality. The strong climatic variations that exist between coastal and savannah areas of Côte d'Ivoire suggest that vector control interventions should be scheduled according to the eco-epidemiological diversity. This study evaluates bioecological parameters of vectors and malaria transmission in two health districts, one coastal and one central of Côte d'Ivoire.

Environmental and socio-economic determinants of fecal sludge emptying in Sub-Saharan Africa: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Communauté d'Etudes pour l'Aménagement du Territoire, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Bâtiment BP - Station 16, CH-1015, Lausanne, Switzerland.

This study sought to understand the determinants of household's choices for fecal sludge (FS) emptying to help fighting against unhygienic/unsafe practices and environmental pollution. A cross-sectional mixed study used in the municipality of Yopougon (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire), involved surveys (559 household), and 24 semi-structured interviews. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) from logistic regressions indicated the variables significantly associated with these practices while thematic content analysis helped assessing stakeholders' perceptions.

In Côte d'Ivoire, there is a high intensity of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors which may threaten successful vector control. Molecular studies of the target site mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) show that the gene frequencies of these mutations are high, widely spread across Côte d'Ivoire, and even fixed in some areas. To further characterize insecticide resistance in Côte d'Ivoire beyond target site mutations, the metabolic resistance mechanism was explored.

Social play fosters cooperation in wild adult chimpanzees.

Curr Biol

December 2024

Taï Chimpanzee Project, Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire; The Ape Social Mind Laboratory, Institut des Sciences Cognitives, CNRS, 69500 Bron, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Adult social play is crucial for fostering tolerance, bonding, and cooperation in human societies, serving as a means to transmit positive emotions and build trust.
  • In a study of 57 adult chimpanzees in Taï National Park, it was found that play behavior increased during mate competition and after disputes, indicating its role in regulating social tension.
  • The research highlights that playing together strengthens social bonds and increases collaboration for collective actions, emphasizing the evolutionary importance of adult social play in both chimpanzees and humans.

Complex vocal systems are thought to evolve if individuals are regularly challenged by complex social decision-making, the social complexity hypothesis. We tested this idea on a West African forest non-human primate, the Olive colobus monkey, a highly cryptic species with very little social behavior and very small group sizes, factors unlikely to favor the evolution of complex communication. The species also has an unusual fission-fusion social system, with group members regularly spending considerable amounts of time with neighboring groups.

The ecological importance of great apes is widely recognised, yet few studies have highlighted the role of protecting great apes' habitats in mitigating climate change, particularly through carbon sequestration. This study used GIS tools to extract data from various sources, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature database, to examine carbon quantity and great ape abundance in African great ape habitats. Subsequently, we employed a generalised linear model to assess the relationship between locally measured great ape populations abundance and carbon storage across areas with different levels of protection.

The efficacy of the combination therapy of albendazole and ivermectin against Trichuris trichiura infection is higher in Tanzania than in Côte d'Ivoire. This study therefore aimed to investigate the difference between the population pharmacokinetics (PK) at these study sites and to determine if an exposure-response analysis could explain the low efficacy of the combination therapy in Côte d'Ivoire. Twenty-four participants (aged 12-19 years) receiving single doses of ivermectin (200 µg/kg) and albendazole (400 mg) were included in the population PK modeling.

Trichuris trichiura is one of four soil-transmitted helminth species that, collectively, are responsible for a considerable public health burden. The World Health Organization recommends preventive chemotherapy as the main intervention to eliminate soil-transmitted helminthiasis as a public health problem. Clinical trials estimated the efficacy of different drugs and treatment regimen against T.

Article Synopsis
  • Schistosomiasis is a significant public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa, linked to poverty and environmental conditions; this study aimed to assess the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni and how water-related activities impact disease spread.
  • The cross-sectional study conducted in western Côte d'Ivoire involved 1602 stool samples and 1729 urine samples from children aged 5-14, alongside observations of water activities and interviews with local leaders and health workers.
  • Results showed a 27.4% prevalence of S. mansoni, with higher rates found in certain health districts; children aged 9-14 were at greater risk, particularly in environments where water-related activities occurred, such as washing clothes near contamination sources.

  • Examination revealed various kidney issues, including glomerulosclerosis and interstitial nephritis.
  • Increased levels of urinary albumin-creatinine ratio were noted 15 months prior to her death, but the exact causes of her kidney disease are still unknown.

Population differences in putty-nosed monkey (Cercopithecus nictitans) call order.

Primates

November 2024

Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) - Congo Program, Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-human primates, like putty-nosed monkeys, struggle to modify their calls but can create variable sequences of calls to convey information effectively.
  • Researchers studied two populations of putty-nosed monkeys to see how they respond to threats like leopards and crowned eagles, finding distinct differences in call assembly.
  • The findings suggest that while these primates have basic call types similar across regions, their control over the order of these calls can vary, offering insights into animal communication and potential implications for linguistic theories.

Background: Malaria remains an important public health problem, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In Rwanda, where malaria ranks among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity, disease transmission is influenced by climatic factors. However, there is a paucity of studies investigating the link between climate change and malaria dynamics, which hinders the development of effective national malaria response strategies.

Population genetic structure and historical demography of the population of forest elephants in Côte d'Ivoire.

PLoS One

August 2024

Laboratoire de Biotechnologie, Agriculture et Valorisation des Ressources Biologiques, Université Félix Houphouët Boigny, Abidjan-Cocody, Côte d'Ivoire.

The population of forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) has continuously declined in Côte d'Ivoire and, the remaining population largely consists of subpopulations that are fragmented and isolated. No data actually exist on the level of genetic diversity and population genetic structure of current forest elephant populations in Côte d'Ivoire. In this sense, determining genetic diversity and the underlying mechanisms of population differentiation is crucial for the initiation of effective conservation management.

UCL Genetics Institute, Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment, University College London, London, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists study how animals change to survive in different places, which is really important for understanding biology.
  • They looked at chimpanzees, our closest relatives, who live in many types of environments like rainforests and savannahs.
  • By examining genetic information from wild chimpanzees, they discovered that some chimps have adapted to fight off malaria in similar ways to humans, showing how important genetic diversity is for endangered animals.
