As the several thousand languages spoken by people all around the world became more and more systematically assessed and catalogued in the 20th century, it became clear that linguistic diversity is unevently distributed across the globe. Up to the present day, the reasons for that are poorly understood. Linguists are thus in the embarassing situation that they do not understand significant regularities in the way the objects of their study -languages- pattern; human sciences at large are faced with the fact that the way humans produce that key cultural product which is often seen as defining the essence of what makes them humans -language-remains in the dark.

Opiate withdrawal has been correlated with decreased extracellular dopamine (DA) levels in the nucleus accumbens (NAC) of morphine-dependent rats. The authors tested the hypothesis that DA transmission plays a critical role in the induction of motivational and somatic withdrawal symptoms. First, the authors used a 6-hydroxydopamine-induced lesion of the NAC to chronically disrupt mesolimbic DA transmission.

The ability of 4 olive baboons (Papio anubis) to use human gaze cues during a competitive food task was investigated. Three baboons used head orientation as a cue, and 1 individual also used eye direction alone. As the baboons did not receive prior training with gestural cues, their performance suggests that the competitive paradigm may be more appropriate for testing nonhuman primates than the standard object-choice paradigm.

The extracellular matrix surrounding amphibian eggs is composed of mucin-type glycoproteins, highly O-glycosylated and plays an important role in the fertilization process. Oligosaccharide-alditols were released from the oviducal mucins of the anuran Rana arvalis by alkali-borohydride treatment in reduced conditions. Neutral and acidic oligosaccharides were fractionated by ion-exchange chromatographies and purified by HPLC.

Background: The biocompatibility of an extracorporeal circuit is improved by heparin bonding onto its inner surface. To determine the effect of heparin-coated circuits for cardiopulmonary bypass with aprotinin prime on postoperative recovery and resource utilization, a prospective study was done in 102 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting with full systemic heparinization.
Methods: Patients were randomly allocated to be treated with either a heparin-coated circuit (n = 51) or an uncoated circuit (n = 51).
