Targeting Mitochondria in Glioma: New Hopes for a Cure.

Biomedicines

November 2024

Nervous System Medical Oncology Department, IRCCS Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, 40139 Bologna, Italy.

Drugs targeting mitochondrial energy metabolism are emerging as promising antitumor therapeutics. Glioma treatment is extremely challenging due to the high complexity of the tumor and the high cellular heterogeneity. From a metabolic perspective, glioma cancer cells can be classified into the oxidative metabolic phenotype (mainly depending on mitochondrial respiration for energy production) and glycolytic phenotype or "Warburg effect" (mainly depending on glycolysis).

Most of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients will experience tumor progression with immunotherapy (IO). Preliminary data suggested an association between high plasma HGF levels and poor response to IO in advanced NSCLC. Our study aimed to evaluate further the role of the HGF/MET pathway in resistance to IO in advanced NSCLC.

Purpose: Availability data are scarce and primarily retrospective in patients with brain metastasis (BM) from gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. The objective of this cohort was to determine prognostic factors for survival outcomes in patients with BM from GI cancers.

Methods: METACER is a national multicentric prospective cohort study which included patients with BM diagnosis during a histologically proven digestive cancer follow-up between 2010 and 2014.

Introduction: There are inconsistencies in how different endoscopic procedures to manage Bilateral Vocal Fold Immobility (BVFI) have been described in the literature. This limits our ability to compare functional outcomes. There is no unifying international terminology available that precisely describes the anatomical boundaries and extent of the different types of treatment.

Decoding states of consciousness from brain activity is a central challenge in neuroscience. Dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) allows the study of short-term temporal changes in functional connectivity (FC) between distributed brain areas. By clustering dFC matrices from resting-state fMRI, we previously described "brain patterns" that underlie different functional configurations of the brain at rest.

European clinical practice guideline: managing and treating laryngopharyngeal reflux disease.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

December 2024

Research Committee of Young-Otolaryngologists of the International Federations of Oto-rhino- laryngological Societies (YO-IFOS), Paris, France.

Objective: To propose a European consensus for managing and treating laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) to guide primary care and specialist physicians.

Methods: Twenty-three European experts (otolaryngologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons) participated in a modified Delphi process to revise 38 statements about the definition, clinical management, and treatment of LPRD. Three voting rounds were conducted on a 5-point scale and a consensus was defined a priori as agreement by 80% of the experts.

Adenomyosis is a commonly encountered pathology in women of reproductive age and frequently coexists with infertility. The effect of adenomyosis on fertility, particularly on fertilisation and intracytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes, is not well understood. Various pretreatment modalities have been used to improve pregnancy rates and live birth outcomes; however, because of a lack of high-quality evidence, there is no clear consensus on the best pretreatment option.

Introduction: Lung transplant (LT) recipients are at greater risk of complications from COVID-19. Treatment options are limited partly due to interactions with immunosuppressive agents. Convalescent plasma (CP) is a potential treatment option, but it has not been extensively studied in LT patients.

Donor-Specific Antibodies Targeting a Repeated Eplet Mismatch and Outcome After Kidney Retransplantation.

Transpl Int

December 2024

Department of Nephrology-Dialysis-Transplantation, Bicêtre Hospital, Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris, Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, France.

Kidney retransplantations are associated with an increased risk of rejection and reduced graft survival compared to first transplantations, notably due to HLA sensitization. The impact of repeated eplet mismatches on retransplantation outcome has not been investigated. We retrospectively assessed the risk of antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) and graft loss associated with preformed DSA targeting Repeated Eplet MisMatches (DREMM) in sensitized patients undergoing kidney retransplantation.

The First Lugano Workshop on the role of adenomyosis in ART.

Reprod Biomed Online

September 2024

The Fertility Clinic, Skive Regional Hospital, Skive, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark.

Adenomyosis is an important clinical condition with uncertain prevalence, and clinical focus on adenomyosis in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) has increased during recent years. Recognizing the limited clinical knowledge on the impact of adenomyosis on ART outcomes, the First Lugano Adenomyosis Workshop was a symposium involving experts in the field of adenomyosis, covering basic research, imaging, surgery and infertility to highlight current advances and future research areas over a wide range of topics related to adenomyosis. Adenomyosis is characterized by altered oestrogen and progesterone signalling pathways.

Background And Aims: The clinical evolution of acute ischemic stroke patients with isolated proximal posterior cerebral artery (PCA) occlusion treated with medical management alone has been poorly described. We aimed to determine the clinical and radiological factors associated with poor functional outcome in this population.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter international retrospective study of consecutive stroke patients with isolated occlusion of the first (P1) or second (P2) segment of PCA admitted within 6 h from symptoms onset in 26 stroke centers in France, Switzerland, and the United States, treated with the best medical management alone.

Background: The Checkmate 067 randomized controlled trial, published in 2015, demonstrated improved progression-free survival and numerically, although not statistically, superior overall survival for ipilimumab + nivolumab. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of nivolumab to ipilimumab + nivolumab as first-line treatment for metastatic melanoma in a real-world setting.

Methods: Patients were prospectively included in the French Melbase cohort from 2013 to 2022.

Background: The onset of hematological malignancies can lead to acute and critical situations. It can also result in adverse outcome despite the significant advancements made in their therapeutic management. In this context, advance care planning and, in particular, advance directives (AD) play an essential role.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create new reference charts for measuring the length of the fetal corpus callosum (CC) during the third trimester, based on a large sample of healthy fetuses, and establish growth evaluation standards using CC length ratios.
  • Conducted from November 2021 to June 2022 at a specialized fetal ultrasound center, the research involved precise measurements of the CC in fetuses aged 17 to 36 weeks, excluding those with inaccurate gestational ages or high risk of brain abnormalities.
  • Results showed high measurement quality (92.8% accuracy) and established a formula for CC length based on gestational age, with consistent ECOFD/CC and HC/CC ratios, proposing them as additional markers for normal CC
