While miniature inertial sensors offer a promising means for precisely detecting, quantifying and classifying animal behaviors, versatile inertial sensing devices adapted for small, freely-moving laboratory animals are still lacking. We developed a standalone and cost-effective platform for performing high-rate wireless inertial measurements of head movements in rats. Our system is designed to enable real-time bidirectional communication between the headborne inertial sensing device and third party systems, which can be used for precise data timestamping and low-latency motion-triggered applications.

It is now becoming evident that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is constantly produced by nearly all cells, contributes to bona fide physiological processes. However, little is known regarding the distribution and functions of H2O2 during embryonic development. To address this question, we used a dedicated genetic sensor and revealed a highly dynamic spatio-temporal pattern of H2O2 levels during zebrafish morphogenesis.

We consider the evolution of a quantitative trait in an asexual population whose size can vary and depends explicitly on the trait. Previous work showed that evolutionary branching is certain ("deterministic branching") above a threshold population size, but uncertain ("stochastic branching") below it.

Aims: Recent advances in redox biology have emphasized the role of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the modulation of signaling pathways and revealed that H2O2 plays a role in cellular remodeling in adults. Thus, an understanding of the mechanisms that control H2O2 levels in mature tissue would be of great interest.
Results: We used a denervation strategy to demonstrate that sensory neurons are responsible for controlling H2O2 levels under normal conditions and after being lesioned.

Apelin receptors (ApelinRs) are expressed along an increasing cortico-medullary gradient in collecting ducts (CDs). We showed here that iv injection of apelin 17 (K17F) in lactating rats characterized by increases in both synthesis and release of arginine vasopressin (AVP) increased diuresis concomitantly with a significant decrease in urine osmolality and no change in Na(+) and K(+) excretion. Under these conditions, we also observed a significant decrease in apical aquaporin-2 immunolabeling in CD, with a cortico-medullary gradient, suggesting that K17F-induced diuresis could be linked to a direct action of apelin on CD.

A major issue in regenerative medicine is the control of progenitor cell mobilisation. Apoptosis has been reported as playing a role in cell plasticity, and it has been recently shown that apoptosis is necessary for organ and appendage regeneration. In this context, we explore its possible mode of action in progenitor cell recruitment during adult regeneration in zebrafish.

A major issue in regenerative medicine is the role of injury in promoting cell plasticity. Here we explore the function of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced through lesions in adult zebrafish. We show that ROS production, following adult fin amputation, is tightly regulated in time and space for at least 24 hours, whereas ROS production remains transient (2 hours) in mere wound healing.

Gjb2 and Gjb6, two contiguous genes respectively encoding the gap junction protein connexin26 (Cx26) and connexin 30 (Cx30) display overlapping expression in the inner ear. Both have been linked to the most frequent monogenic hearing impairment, the recessive isolated deafness DFNB1. Although there is robust evidence for the direct involvement of Cx26 in cochlear functions, the contribution of Cx30 is unclear since deletion of Cx30 strongly downregulates Cx26 both in human and in mouse.
