Background: Elderly patients discharged from hospital experience fragmented care, repeated and lengthy emergency department (ED) visits, relapse into their earlier condition, and rapid cognitive and functional decline. The Acute Care for Elders (ACE) program at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada uses innovative strategies, such as transition coaches, to improve the care transition experiences of frail elderly patients. The ACE program reduced the lengths of hospital stay and readmission for elderly patients, increased patient satisfaction, and saved the health care system over Can $4.

Purpose: Manual wheelchair users are more vulnerable, in situations such as road crossings, hazardous sidewalks or curbs and crossing of buildings and facilities threshold. Geospatial assistive technology (GAT) can help with route planning. However, it is important to ensure the usability of such products, as well as the satisfaction of persons with reduced mobility.

This study aimed to portray the characteristics, process variables, and sensorimotor outcomes of patients who had received their usual post-stroke in-patient rehabilitation in three stroke rehabilitation units in Quebec in 2013-2014. We assessed patients ( = 264) at admission and discharge with a subset of a standardized assessment toolkit consisting of observational and performance-based assessment tools. The patients, with a mean age of 60.

Background: The literature on the implementation of knowledge products is extensive. However, this literature is still difficult to interpret for policymakers and other stakeholders when faced with choosing implementation strategies likely to bring about successful change in their health systems. This work has the particularity to examine the scope of this literature, and to clarify the effectiveness of implementation strategies for different knowledge products.

Cognitive outcomes of children who have experienced complex trauma: a systematic review protocol.

JBI Evid Synth

March 2020

Centre for Research on Children and Families, School of Social Work, McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to assess cognitive outcomes of children who have experienced complex trauma in comparison to children who have not, and to test the effect of potential moderating factors.

Introduction: A relatively high proportion of children have experienced complex trauma, which can lead to negative consequences on various aspects of development, including cognitive functions. Studies and reviews have documented cognitive outcomes of children who have experienced complex trauma, but with conflicting results.

Quality of life (QoL) is an important parameter to monitor during rehabilitation; however, accurate assessment is challenging. Among individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), assessing QoL is further challenged due to complex sequelae, such as secondary health conditions and factors related to community integration. A Participation and Quality of Life (PAR-QoL) toolkit was created to aid clinicians and researchers in the selection of QoL outcomes tools specific to SCI.

Immediate biomechanical and functional effects of knee braces are often reported, however, the duration and type of knee brace treatment for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) remain unclear. The objective was to evaluate usage, comfort, pain, and knee adduction moment (KAM) of three knee braces each worn 3 months by patients. Twenty-four patients with KOA were assigned in a randomized crossover trial a valgus three-point bending system brace (V3P-brace), an unloader brace with valgus and external rotation functions (VER-brace) and a stabilizing brace used after ligament injuries (ACL-brace).

Purpose: To identify clinicians' perceptions of current levels of implementation of cognitive rehabilitation best practices, as well as individual and consensual group priorities for implementing cognitive rehabilitation interventions as part of a multi-site integrated knowledge translation initiative.

Method: A two-step consensus-building methodology was used, that is the Technique for Research of Information by Animation of a Group of Experts (TRIAGE), including a cross-sectional electronic survey followed by consensual in-person group discussions to identify implementation priorities from a list of evidence-based practices for cognitive rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury and stroke. Thirty-eight professionals from three rehabilitation teams ( = 9, 13 and 16) participated, including neuropsychologists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, educators, clinical coordinators and program managers.

Adoption of municipal bylaw legislating mandatory helmet use for cyclists under the age of 18: impact on cycling and helmet use.

Health Promot Chronic Dis Prev Can

January 2020

Institute for Health and Social Policy and Department of Geography, McGill University, Montréal, Quebec, Canada.

Introduction: Bicycle helmet use is recognized as an effective way to prevent head injuries in cyclists. A number of countries have introduced legislation to make helmets mandatory, but many object to this type of measure for fear that it could discourage people, particularly teenagers, from cycling. In 2011, the City of Sherbrooke adopted a bylaw requiring minors to wear a bicycle helmet.

Electronic address:

Theory of mind (ToM) refers to the ability to infer the mental states of others. ToM is impaired in schizophrenia and these deficits seem to hinder functional recovery. ToM is thus an important, but complex treatment target, supported by several processes.

Community-based spinal cord injury (SCI) associations play a critical role in successful community integration of individuals having experienced an SCI, with knowledge translation being increasingly important for the process. The implementation of a new online peer-mentor training program was perceived as being useful in improving and standardizing training practices for peer mentors across Canada. It was also seen as an opportunity to explore the context, process, and influence of a formal implementation process in SCI community-based associations that are corporate members of SCI Canada with a view to informing future implementation efforts.

Background: In order to prevent pressure ulcers, wheelchair users are advised to regularly change position to redistribute or eliminate pressure between the buttocks region and the seat of the wheelchair. A power tilt-in-space wheelchair (allowing simultaneous pivoting of the seat and the backrest of the wheelchair toward the back or front) meets many clinical purposes, including pressure management, increased postural control, and pain management. However, there is a significant gap between the use of tilt as recommended by clinicians and its actual usage.

A machine-learning method for classifying and analyzing foot placement: Application to manual material handling.

J Biomech

December 2019

Institut de Recherche Robert-Sauvé en Santé et en Sécurité du Travail (IRSST), Montréal, QC, Canada.

Foot placement strategy is an essential aspect in the study of movement involving full body displacement. To get beyond a qualitative analysis, this paper provides a foot placement classification and analysis method that can be used in sports, rehabilitation or ergonomics. The method is based on machine learning using a weighted k-nearest neighbors algorithm.

Purpose: To compare the advantages of training on a driving simulator versus on the road, when learning to drive with new assistive technologies (AT) in individuals with motor impairments.

Method: An experimental group (EXP = 16) that trained on a driving simulator was compared to a comparison group (CMP = 16) that received training only on the road. A post-training road test assessed driving performance.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the validity of energy expenditure calculation based on the product of energy cost and walked distance estimated by wearable devices in individuals after hemispheric stroke.

Methods: We recruited individuals with hemispheric stroke sequelae who were able to walk without human assistance.

Appl Neuropsychol Adult

October 2021

Department of Rehabilitation, Faculty of Medicine, Laval University, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Assessing one's sentence production ability can help to identify difficulties experienced by individuals with aphasia and enables targeted intervention. Speech-language pathologists working with the francophone population must contend with the current lack of a sentence production evaluation tool. The aim of this article is to present the development, validation, and normative data of a French-language test used to evaluate the production of sentences: the BEPS (Batterie d'Évaluation de la Production Syntaxique).
