Purpose: To explore the effects of the Personalized Citizen Assistance for Social Participation (APIC), an intervention adapted here for visual impairment, involving weekly stimulation sessions over six to twelve months, provided by trained and supervised attendants, on seven outcomes (social participation, leisure, independence, mobility, quality of life, health-related quality of life, and empowerment) in older adults with visual impairment, and to document its facilitators and barriers.

Methods: A mixed-method design, which included a pre-experimental and an exploratory qualitative clinical research component, was used on 8 older adults (7 women) with visual impairment aged 70-86, and 8 attendants (5 women) aged 20-74. Before the intervention, directly after, and four months later, older adults completed questionnaires on the 7 outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • - Low back pain (LBP) is a major global disability issue, and effective clinical assessment tools are currently lacking; abnormal muscle control and fatigue are key factors involved.
  • - A study evaluated a new flexible surface electromyography (sEMG) system using PEVA electrodes and compared it with a traditional system, measuring muscle activity during two clinical tests for LBP assessment.
  • - The new sEMG system demonstrated similar sensitivity and validity to the traditional system in detecting muscle fatigue and activation patterns, suggesting its potential as a reliable tool for LBP assessment.

Objective: We aimed to examine the effect of age of obesity onset, sex, and their interaction on abdominal and femoral subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) morphology (degree of adipocyte hyperplasia or hypertrophy).

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we isolated adipocytes via collagenase digestion from abdominal and femoral SAT biopsies taken from male and female adults with childhood-onset obesity (CO; n = 8 males, n = 16 females) or adult-onset obesity (AO; n = 8 males, n = 13 females). Regional body composition was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and a single-slice abdominal computed tomography scan.

Article Synopsis
  • - Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a disease caused by abnormal CTG repeats in a specific gene, leading to muscle weakness and wasting, with limited research on how it affects skeletal muscle over time.
  • - A study with 22 DM1 patients over three years found significant relationships between changes in muscle strength and factors like muscle fiber size, types, and certain proteins involved in muscle function and autophagy.
  • - Results indicate that decreases in specific muscle fiber metrics correlate with muscle strength loss, while strength training may help mitigate accumulation of harmful nuclear foci; further research is necessary to establish reliable biomarkers for muscle strength loss in DM1.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involved 23 participants, looking at the presence of neuromas regardless of whether they experienced neuropathic pain, and found a total of 31 neuromas across 24 limbs.
  • * Results showed that 79% of participants had at least one neuroma, with the superficial fibular nerve being the most affected; ultrasound was found to be a helpful tool for diagnosing these neuromas.

Background: Unused opioid prescriptions can be a driver of opioid misuse. Our objective was to determine the optimal quantity of opioids to prescribe to patients with acute pain at emergency department discharge, in order to meet their analgesic needs while limiting the amount of unused opioids.

Methods: In a prospective, multicentre cohort study, we included consecutive patients aged 18 years and older with an acute pain condition present for less than 2 weeks who were discharged from emergency department with an opioid prescription.

  • The World Health Organization wants to expand the roles of nursing, like nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, to better understand their impact on healthcare.
  • A study reviewed many articles to find out how well these advanced nursing roles are researched around the world.
  • They found that advanced practice nurses often provide care that is as good or better than doctors in many areas, but there are still some mixed results in other aspects, and more research is being done on how AI can help in this field.

Background: Youth involved in child welfare have high rates of mental health problems and are known to receive mental health services from multiple settings. Still, gaps remain in our understanding of service use patterns across settings over the course of youth's involvement with child welfare.

Objective: To examine the settings, reasons for contact, persons involved in initiating care, and timing of each mental health service contact for individuals over their involvement with the child welfare system, and to identify factors that predict multi-setting use.

Background: Antibiotic resistance (ABR) has emerged as a major threat to health. Properly informed decisions to mitigate this threat require surveillance systems that integrate information on resistant bacteria and antibiotic use in humans, animals, and the environment, in line with the One Health concept. Despite a strong call for the implementation of such integrated surveillance systems, we still lack a comprehensive overview of existing organizational models for integrated surveillance of ABR.

Society imposes work and school schedules, as well as social expectations, that militate against consistently obtaining more than 7-9 h of sleep every 24 h. For most but not all adults this sleep duration is adequate. But among those who consistently obtain more than 9 h of sleep per day ("long sleepers"), there likely exists a subpopulation of individuals who are nevertheless failing to obtain enough sleep to satisfy their physiological sleep needs - a consequence of "restricting" their daily sleep durations to whatever extent they can tolerate so as to conform as closely as possible to society's norms and expectations.

Objective: The mini Social cognition & Emotional Assessment (mini-SEA) is a social cognition battery which assesses theory of mind and emotion recognition. Currently, no psychometrically validated measure of social cognition with adapted normative data exists for the middle-aged and elderly French-Quebec population. This project aims to determine the known-group discriminant validity of a cultural and linguistic adaptation of the mini-SEA between cognitively healthy people, those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or living with Alzheimer's Disease (AD).

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the proton-pump inhibitor pantoprazole on critically ill patients undergoing invasive ventilation, comparing it to a placebo.
  • The trial included 4,821 patients and found that pantoprazole significantly reduced the incidence of clinically important upper gastrointestinal bleeding compared to placebo (1.0% vs. 3.5%).
  • However, there was no significant difference in overall mortality rates at 90 days between the pantoprazole group (29.1%) and the placebo group (30.9%).
