Background: Advances in pediatric oncology have significantly increased survival rates, yet have introduced challenges in managing long-term treatment side effects. This study process introduces an interdisciplinary clinical intervention program rooted in the family resilience framework, aimed at improving well-being across the cancer trajectory for children and their families, especially those in Canadian communities far from specialized oncology centers with limited access to resources.

Methods: Employing an intervention mapping approach, this program collaboratively involves patients, families, professionals, and researchers.

Boire, MD, MSc, CRCHUS, and Division of Rheumatology, Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux de l'Estrie - Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS), and Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke;

Methods: Consecutive patients with recent-onset polyarthritis fulfilling RA classification criteria recruited in EUPA were assessed at baseline. Three successive periods were defined: (1) prior to the general availability of biologics (1998-2004; 245 patients), (2) prior to the implantation of the 2010 classification criteria (2005-2010; 266 patients), and (3) the most recent decade (2011-2022; 329 patients).

Article Synopsis
  • Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of genetic skin disorders that lead to blistering and erosions on the skin due to minor trauma, with the simplex form (EBS) particularly linked to mutations in keratin genes K5 and K14.
  • EBS results in painful skin lesions that significantly affect the quality of life, and research has identified key genes involved in inflammation and skin integrity through studies on mouse models and human cells.
  • This review discusses the three subtypes of EBS, their genetic causes, gene expression patterns, molecular mechanisms, and recent advancements in treatment options.

Electronic address:

Background: To assess trends of first cases of lower extremity amputation (LEA) related to diabetes and/or peripheral arterial disease (PAD), according to areas of residency and neighbourhood material and social deprivation quintiles, in the province of Quebec, Canada.

Methods: Using the Quebec Integrated Chronic Disease Surveillance System, we calculated crude and age-standardized annual incidence rates of first LEA (total, minor, and major) among adults 40 years of age and older with diabetes and/or PAD in fiscal years 2006 and 2019. Area of residency was compiled in 3 categories: (1) Montreal and other census metropolitan areas; (2) midsize agglomerations (10,000-100,000 inhabitants); and (3) small towns and rural areas (< 10,000 inhabitants).

Background: Clinical practice recommendations for macronutrient intake in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) are insufficiently grounded in the research, possibly due to a paucity of research in key areas necessary to support macronutrient recommendations. An initial scoping review, prior to any systematic review, was determined to be vital.

Objectives: To identify topical areas in macronutrients and MBS with a sufficient evidence base to guide nutrition recommendations.

Introduction: In a 5-year follow-up study, we investigated the enduring effects of cognitive training on older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Methods: A randomized controlled single-blind trial involved 145 older adults with MCI, assigned to cognitive training (MEMO+), an active control psychosocial intervention, or a no-contact condition. Five-year effects were measured on immediate and delayed memory recall, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment screening test (MoCA), self-reported strategy use, and daily living difficulties.

Background: Awareness-raising and education have been identified as strategies to counter the taboo surrounding death and dying. As the favoured venue for youth education, schools have an essential role to play in informing future decision-makers. However, school workers are not comfortable addressing the subjects of death and dying, which, unlike other social issues, have no guidelines to influence awareness of these subjects in youth.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how recent updates in Alzheimer's disease diagnostic guidelines from NIA-AA and IWG impact clinical diagnoses among cognitively unimpaired and impaired individuals.
  • It analyzed clinical and biomarker data from 1,195 participants, noting differences in diagnostic labels assigned under various guidelines and the frequency of discordant diagnoses among them.
  • The findings revealed significant variance in predictive value for cognitive impairment across different diagnostic frameworks, with older guidelines showing a clearer correlation than some of the more recent ones.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal antenatal depression can negatively affect perinatal outcomes, but prior studies mainly look at later pregnancy symptoms and show inconsistent results.
  • This study involved 2,053 participants using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale to track depressive symptoms across all trimesters, examining their impact on infant growth within the first year.
  • Results indicated that higher depressive scores in the first and second trimesters were linked to larger birth weight (macrosomia), while higher scores in the third trimester increased risks for preterm birth and low birth weight, emphasizing the need for depression screening early in pregnancy.

Background: Insomnia is more common as people age. Several common hypnotics used to treat insomnia often do not adequately alleviate sleep issues in older adults and may be associated with negative residual effects such as an increased risk of falls, cognitive impairment, automobile accidents, and lack of response to auditory stimuli. The objective of these analyses of three clinical studies was to investigate the efficacy and safety of the dual orexin-receptor antagonist lemborexant (LEM) in older adults.

Aim: The relative contributions of insulin secretory defects and possible additional contribution of insulin resistance for the development of cystic fibrosis (CF)-related diabetes (CFRD) are poorly understood. We aimed to (a) determine which indices of insulin resistance predict progression to CFRD, and (b) to model the relative contributions of insulin secretory function and insulin resistance to predict the risk of CFRD.

Materials And Methods: Three hundred and three individuals living with CF underwent a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test with blood sampling every 30 min at 12-24-month intervals until they developed CFRD or until the end of follow-up (up to 15 years).

Within the context of neoliberal healthcare, nurses and other health professionals face working conditions that leave them perpetually feeling inadequate, as though they are not enough. They are consistently expected to achieve more with less resources. In such an environment, mere professionalism proves wholly insufficient, enforcing norms of altruism and kindness.
