Peritoneal surface malignancies comprise a heterogeneous group of primary tumours, including peritoneal mesothelioma, and peritoneal metastases of other tumours, including ovarian, gastric, colorectal, appendicular or pancreatic cancers. The pathophysiology of peritoneal malignancy is complex and not fully understood. The two main hypotheses are the transformation of mesothelial cells (peritoneal primary tumour) and shedding of cells from a primary tumour with implantation of cells in the peritoneal cavity (peritoneal metastasis).

Background: Optimal management of severe trauma patients with active hemorrhage relies on adequate initial resuscitation. Early administration of coagulation factors improves post-traumatic coagulation disorders, and four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) might be useful in this context. Our main hypothesis is that four-factor PCC in addition to a massive transfusion protocol decreases blood product consumption at day 1 in severe trauma patients with major bleeding.

Objective: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are promising biomarkers in ovarian cancer. Their kinetics during treatment might be useful for monitoring disease burden, and guiding treatments in patients treated with peri-operative chemotherapy and interval debulking surgery (IDS).
Methods: Serial blood samples of patients enrolled in the randomized phase II CHIVA trial, comparing first line carboplatin-paclitaxel +/- nintedanib (NCT01583322) and IDS, were investigated to assess the kinetics of 11 relevant miRNAs.

Recent innovations in wearable action cameras with high-definition video recording enable surgeons to use cameras for their surgical procedures. In this study, the GoPro HERO 6 (and 7) Black edition camera was modified step by step to allow for a completely wireless surgeon-perspective recording with a battery life and memory capacity never previously obtained with such a high level of digital video quality. With this system, a surgeon can record for more than 14 hours 26 minutes in 1,080 pixels at 60 frames per second without breaking scrub and capture the operating surgeon's direct view of the field.

Iodine-containing contrast media (ICM) are extensively used to improve image quality and information content in x-ray-based examinations, particularly in computed tomography (CT). In parallel, there is increasing evidence that the use of ICM during CT sessions is associated with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) breaks that may influence the estimation of the risks linked to x-ray exposure. Why has iodine been preferred to any other heavy elements to enhance contrast in radiodiagnostics? How to understand such DNA breaks effect? We searched for the answers in the early times of x-ray medical use.

Purpose: The aim of the OCTO clinical study was to measure patients' adherence to capecitabine-based treatment.
Methods: A cohort of ambulatory patients treated with capecitabine monotherapy for either locally advanced or metastatic, breast or colorectal cancer was monitored for 6 cycles. Adherence was assessed in all patients by self-completed questionnaires on disease, pill-count and pharmacological dosage of FBAL (metabolite of capecitabine); and in half of the cohort by electronic medication event monitoring systems (MEMS™) recording the opening times of the device.

Unlabelled: EUSOBI and 30 national breast radiology bodies support mammography for population-based screening, demonstrated to reduce breast cancer (BC) mortality and treatment impact. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the reduction in mortality is 40 % for women aged 50-69 years taking up the invitation while the probability of false-positive needle biopsy is <1 % per round and overdiagnosis is only 1-10 % for a 20-year screening. Mortality reduction was also observed for the age groups 40-49 years and 70-74 years, although with "limited evidence".

Background: Bromodomain and extraterminal (BET) proteins are chromatin readers that preferentially affect the transcription of genes with super-enhancers, including oncogenes. BET proteins bind acetylated histone tails via their bromodomain, bringing the elongation complex to the promoter region. OTX015 (MK-8628) specifically binds to BRD2, BRD3, and BRD4, preventing BET proteins from binding to the chromatin, thus inhibiting gene transcription.

Survival after azacitidine (AZA) failure in higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) is poor and new treatment options are needed. Erlotinib, an oral inhibitor of the epidermal-growth-factor-receptor (EGFR), has shown in preclinical models some efficacy in higher risk MDS and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In this phase I/II trial, 30 patients received 100mg/day (n=5) or 150mg/day (n=25) of Erlotinib orally after primary or secondary resistance to AZA treatment.
