Unlabelled: Sinusitis, with sometimes severe symptoms, are frequent in cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of this mild-term retrospective study was to evaluate the functional and anatomical results of functional endoscopic ethmoidectomy (FEE) in 12 patients with CF. Nasal polyposis (9 cases) and medialization of the nasomaxillary wall (3 cases) were detected during endoscopic examination.

Unlabelled: Electrovaporization of the prostate consists of the use of a high energy section current to destroy hyperplastic prostatic tissue. The authors present the preliminary results obtained with this new technique.

Method: 15 patients presenting indications for transurethral resection of the prostate were included in this prospective study.

Electromyographic interference patterns during a gradual increase in force were studied by means of the turns-amplitude analysis in a series of HIV-infected patients with and without clinical, biological and histological signs of myopathy. Different parameters were evaluated to determine their sensitivity for the diagnosis of the myopathies that occur in this context. The studied parameters were the number of turns (NT), the mean amplitude of the turns (MA) and the ratio NT/MA (RTA).

A 25 year old woman, without family history of muscular dystrophy, had had an isolated lower limb hypertrophy since infancy and later experienced exercise-induced myalgia. Genomic DNA analysis showed a deletion of exons 45 to 52 of the dystrophin gene. Uncommon phenotypes of dystrophinopathies and consequences in genetic counselling in women are emphasised.

Rationale And Objectives: We assessed the tolerability and the intraarticular kinetics of gadolinium tetra-azacyclododecane tetraacetic acid (Gd-DOTA) using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.

Methods: Twelve of 18 dogs received an intraarticular injection of Gd-DOTA solution. Pathologic examination of all joints was performed with assessment of Gd-DOTA bone absorption.

Background: The prognostic value of computed tomographic (CT) scans in differentiating mild from severe forms of acute pancreatitis is well established. Nonetheless, in patients with a severe form of the disease, some will have a relatively uneventful course while others will have severe complications. This prospective, multicenter study was done to evaluate the prognostic value of early CT scan in a homogenous group of patients with a first attack of severe acute pancreatitis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of femoropopliteal transluminal angioplasty performed in the operating room by vascular surgeons and the factors that might influence outcome.

Methods: The clinical, biologic, and angiographic, findings of 103 consecutive transluminal angioplasties performed in the operating suite in 95 patients for occlusive disease of the femoral or popliteal arteries were analyzed. With each variable, patency was compared according to the log rank test, and a Cox multivariate analysis was applied to the statistically significant variables.

The aim of this study was to determine whether oxidative stress occurs in unstable angina. Thirty patients with unstable angina class B (Braunwald classification) were prospectively studied. Control groups consisted of 23 patients presenting with stable angina and of 21 age-matched healthy volunteers.

Interaction of oscillatory and steady turbulent flows in airway tubes during impedance measurement.

Measurement of input respiratory impedance is carried out by superimposing forced oscillations on spontaneous breathing. The latter thus acts as a quasi-steady unidirectional flow component, with effects on the measured impedance that are habitually neglected (linearity assumption). We examined the validity of that assumption in the case of a turbulent steady flow.

To examine the ability of beta-adrenergic contractile reserve assessment to predict the outcome of patients with heart failure, a prospective study was undertaken in 35 patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and radionuclide ejection fraction below 40%. During right- and left-sided catheterization, right atrial and left ventricular (LV) pressures, peak positive LV dp/dt, cardiac index, and plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine concentrations were measured at baseline. After a left main intracoronary infusion of dobutamine (25 to 200 micrograms.

The prognostic value of 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging was compared with that of other noninvasive cardiac imaging indices in ninety patients (mean age = 52 +/- 7 yr) suffering from either ischemic (n = 24) or idiopathic (n = 66) cardiomyopathy. Patients had different measurements taken: cardiac MIBG uptake, radionuclide left ventricular ejection fraction, x-ray cardiothoracic ratio and echographic M-Mode data. Cardiac MIBG uptake was assessed as the heart-to-mediastinum activity ratio measured on the chest anterior view image obtained 4 hr after intravenous injection.

Desensitization of myocardial beta-adrenergic receptors may result both from an impairment of the norepinephrine (NE) neuronal uptake function and from an increase in circulating NE concentrations. The respective role of these two mechanisms of desensitization was examined in 18 patients with congestive heart failure related to an idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. The neuronal NE uptake system was evaluated by [123I]metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy.

Modern imaging methods are undeniably very attractive. They should make possible an easy study of the musculotendinous rotator cuff of the shoulder joint, lesions of which are the cause of most painful or stiff shoulder syndromes. However, not all shoulder symptoms are due to rotator cuff lesions.

The metabolic response to exercise was compared in 10 cirrhotic patients (P) in a stable clinical condition and in 6 sedentary, age-matched, normal subjects (C) performing 32 minutes of treadmill exercise with the same constant workload corresponding to three to four times their resting oxygen uptake. Taking indirect calorimetry as reference, respiratory exchanges indicated that cirrhotic patients consumed carbohydrates almost exclusively, unlike the normal controls, who consumed lipids and glucids in about the same proportions (RQ: 0.98 +/- 0.

To specify the influence of blood pressure on diabetic microangiopathy, the factors related to retinopathy and nephropathy were studied among 56 consecutive type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic out-patients without hypertension. Diabetes mellitus had been diagnosed for at least one year (mean duration of diabetes +/- SEM = 11.4 +/- 0.

Propranolol, a beta-blocking agent, has been proposed in the prevention of gastro-intestinal bleeding in cirrhotic patients, and is known for its bronchoconstrictive effects. Since hypoxemia is a frequent finding in patients with cirrhosis, this work was undertaken to study the effects of intravenous propranolol on pulmonary function and on gas exchange in these patients. The 10 patients studied had cirrhosis associated with an increase in the alveolar arterial O2 difference, (A-a)DO2, an index of arterial oxygenation impairment.
