Background: Chemoradiotherapy with high-dose cisplatin (HD-Cis: 100 mg/m q3w for three cycles) is the standard of care (SOC) in locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HNSCC). Cumulative delivered dose of cisplatin is prognostic of survival, even beyond 200 mg/m but high toxicity compromises its delivery.

Aim: Cisplatin fractionation may allow, by decreasing the peak serum concentration, to decrease toxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 410 oncologists surveyed in France, 75% viewed AD as relevant, but only 36% regularly inform their patients about them, often due to concerns that AD discussions may cause anxiety.
  • * There is a notable division among oncologists regarding the usefulness and safety of AD, with many preferring to designate a "person of trust" over formal AD.

Urachal carcinoma: a large retrospective multicentric study from the French Genito-Urinary Tumor Group.

Front Oncol

January 2023

Department of Medical Oncology, Institut Paoli-Calmettes, Marseille, France.

Introduction: Urachal cancer (UrC) is a rare, non-urothelial malignancy. Its natural history and management are poorly understood. Although localized to the bladder dome, the most common histological subtype of UrC is adenocarcinoma.

A new 165-SNP low-density lipoprotein cholesterol polygenic risk score based on next generation sequencing outperforms previously published scores in routine diagnostics of familial hypercholesterolemia.

Genetic diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) remains unexplained in 30 to 70% of patients after exclusion of monogenic disease. There is now a growing evidence that a polygenic burden significantly modulates LDL-cholesterol (LDL-c) concentrations. Several LDL-c polygenic risk scores (PRS) have been set up.

Article Synopsis
  • Renal impairment is a significant issue in multiple myeloma, affecting 20-30% at diagnosis and 40-50% during the disease, leading to poorer outcomes compared to those with normal kidney function.
  • A study of 55 multiple myeloma patients with renal failure undergoing high-dose melphalan-based autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) found a 58% rate of very good partial response, with an overall survival of 76 months, similar to those with normal renal function.
  • Although toxicities like febrile neutropenia (75%) and severe mucositis (34%) were observed, the results suggest that ASCT with 140 mg/m melphalan can be an effective treatment for patients

Purpose: We report a 5-year follow-up of a cohort of patients who underwent a first prostate biopsy following a prostate cancer antigen 3 (PCA3) test.

Material And Methods: We reviewed consecutive patients who had in 2008 a single urinary PCA3 test using the Gen-Probe assay before a first prostate biopsy for a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) between 3 and 20ng/mL and/or a suspicious digital rectal examination. PCA3 performances were analyzed in 2008 and then in 2013 after taking into account the results of repeat biopsies.

Purpose: To assess the quality of vision in pseudophakic patients with aspheric intraocular lens (IOL) without spherical aberration compared to patients with spherical IOL.

Methods: Twenty-four patients (48 eyes) undergoing cataract surgery were randomly divided into two groups: 12 patients received an aspheric IOL in both eyes and 12 received spherical IOLs. The integrity of ocular functions was assessed with clinical examination and multifocal electroretinogram.

Purpose: To assess the quality of vision in pseudophakic patients with a prolate aspherical intraocular lens (IOL) compared to patients with a spherical IOL.

Patients And Methods: Twenty patients undergoing cataract surgery were divided into two groups according to the type of IOL: ten prolate aspherical IOLs (TECNIS Z9000, AMO, USA) and ten spherical IOLs (911 CeeOn Edge, AMO, USA). The integrity of ocular functions was assessed with clinical examination and multifocal electroretinogram.

Purpose: To assess in vivo the corneal epithelial damage caused by a topical toxic medication using a 60-MHz ultrasound device.

Material: and methods: A solution of timolol with 0.01% benzalkonium chloride (BAC) was applied twice a day in the test eyes of ten rabbits, and a BAC-free solution of timolol in the control eyes, for 56 days.

Typing of nonencapsulated haemophilus strains by repetitive-element sequence-based PCR using intergenic dyad sequences.

J Clin Microbiol

August 2003

Département de Microbiologie Médicale et Moléculaire, Unité de Bactériologie, Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Bretonneau, 37044 Tours Cedex, France.

Intergenic dyad sequences (IDS) are short repeated elements that have been described for several Haemophilus genomes and for only two other bacterial genera. We developed a repetitive-element sequence-based PCR using an IDS-specific primer as a typing method (IDS-PCR) for nonencapsulated Haemophilus strains and compared this technique with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of DNA restricted with SmaI. IDS-PCR was rapid, easy to perform, and reproducible, with a high discriminatory capacity for nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) strains.

Fimbrial ghf gene cluster of genital strains of Haemophilus spp.

Infect Immun

October 2002

Département de Microbiologie Médicale et Moléculaire, Unité de Bactériologie, Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Bretonneau, 37044 Tours Cedex, France.

We analyzed the LKP fimbrial gene clusters of six piliated strains of a cryptic genospecies of Haemophilus isolated from the genital tracts of adult patients (five strains) and from an infected neonate. In a group of 19 genital strains, LKP-like genes have been found in only these 6 strains. In addition to the ghfA, ghfD, and ghfE genes previously described, we characterized two genes, designated ghfB and ghfC, encoding the putative chaperone and assembly platform proteins.

[Primary hypereosinophilia syndrome manifesting as encephalopathy and vision disorders].

Rev Neurol (Paris)

October 2001

Services de Médecine Nucléaire, Centre hospitalo-universitaire Bretonneau, 2bis, boulevard Tonnelé, 37044 Tours.

We report the case of a 60-year-old man who developed visual and cognitive disorders. Investigations confirmed the diagnosis of idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome even though the patient had a history of rectal cancer. The olinical course was favorable after treatment.
