Misperception of sleep in bipolar disorder: an exploratory study using questionnaire versus actigraphy.

Int J Bipolar Disord

November 2020

Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris, GHU Paris Nord, DMU Neurosciences, Hôpital Fernand Widal, Département de Psychiatrie et de Médecine Addictologique, Paris, France.

Background: The concept of misperception of sleep refers to the estimated discrepancy between subjective and objective measures of sleep. This has been assessed only in a few prior studies in individuals with Bipolar Disorder (BD) as compared to Healthy Controls (HC) and with mixed results.

Methods: We assessed a sample of 133 euthymic individuals with BD and 63 HC for retrospective subjective (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) and objective (21 days of actigraphy recording) measures of total sleep time, sleep latency and sleep efficiency.

Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) have higher than average rates of coffee, tobacco and alcohol use. These substances may have deleterious effects on sleep quality and quantity, which may destabilize sleep/wake cycles and negatively impact the clinical course and prognosis of BD. The use of these substances may also be perceived as a self-medication attempt, for example, to induce sleep or to increase vigilance during the day.

Background: Previous studies suggested that genetic status affects the clinical course of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D) patients. The aim of this study was to compare the outcome of desmoglein-2 (DSG2) mutation carriers to those who carry the plakophilin-2 (PKP2) mutation, the most common ARVC/D-associated gene.

Methods And Results: Consecutive ARVC/D patients carrying a pathogenic mutation in PKP2 or DSG2 were selected from a national ARVC/D registry.

Travel and acquisition of multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.

Med Mal Infect

October 2018

Laboratoire de recherche génomique, hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, Genève, Switzerland.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is considered a major threat to health. Enterobacteriaceae have increasingly become resistant to antibiotics through the acquisition and dissemination of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) that confer resistance to most beta-lactams. While ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae were formerly restricted to hospitals, they have now spread to community settings, especially in developing countries.

Estimated risk of endocarditis in adults with predisposing cardiac conditions undergoing dental procedures with or without antibiotic prophylaxis.

Clin Infect Dis

June 2006

Assistance Publique Hopitaux de Paris, Service des Maladies Infectieuses et Tropicales B, Centre Hospitalo-Universitaire Bichat Claude Bernard, Universite Paris VII, INSERM U 738, Paris, France.

Background: Although antibiotic prophylaxis for infective endocarditis (IE) has been recommended for persons with predisposing cardiac conditions (PCCs) for many years, its efficacy, which has not been demonstrated, has been recently challenged. To assess its usefulness, we estimated the risk of developing IE after undergoing a dental procedure for which subjects would be eligible for prophylaxis, both in subjects having (protected procedure) or not having (unprotected procedure) received antibiotic prophylaxis.

Methods: The number of French persons with PCCs, the annual number of dental procedures in which subjects would be eligible for antibiotic prophylaxis, and the number of procedures that were unprotected were estimated on the basis of a survey performed on a sample of 2805 subjects aged 25-84 years.
