Guillain-Barré Syndrome During Platinum-Based Chemotherapy: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Platinum-based chemotherapy is commonly associated with toxic sensory neuropathies, but also, although rarely, with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). We describe five patients who developed GBS while receiving platinum-based chemotherapy for a solid tumor and report the five cases published so far. Most patients had received cumulative platinum doses below known neurotoxic levels, and all of them had an optimal outcome after platinum discontinuation, associated in most cases with administration of intravenous immunoglobulin.

[Treatment of primary disease (breast, non-small cell lung and prostate cancers) with irradiation in case of de novo metastatic cancer].

The basis of treatment of primary disease in case of metastatic cancer at diagnosis is based on the knowledge of the natural history of the disease, the biology of the primary tumour and its metastases, advances in modern radiotherapy techniques (modulated intensity, stereotactic radiotherapy) in order to improve the survival of patients with advanced disease. The clinical concept of oligometastatic disease at diagnosis has repositioned the interest of local treatment for primitive disease because these patients have a slower evolutionary profile than metastatic disease extended from the outset. This article reviews the indication of radiotherapy as a local treatment for primary cancer in a de novo metastatic diagnosed disease in the case of breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer.

Essential knowledge for patients with rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis: Results of a multicentric survey in France among health professionals and patients.

Objective: Information and education are recommended for patients with inflammatory arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (SpA). However, there is no consensus on which knowledge is essential to enhance patients' self-management. The aim of this study was to determine such knowledge.

Methods: Patients were initially treated with three cycles of pemetrexed, cisplatin plus bevacizumab (sequence 1) followed by bevacizumab maintenance and after progression, re-introduction of three cycles of pemetrexed, cisplatin plus bevacizumab (sequence 2) and pemetrexed plus bevacizumab maintenance. Employment represents a useful functional end point and an indicator of social reintegration. A new approach for diagnosing chronic myelomonocytic leukemia using structural parameters of Sysmex XN analyzers in routine laboratory practice.

According to WHO recommendations, diagnosis of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) beforehand requires microscopic examination of peripheral blood to identify dysplasia and/or blasts when monocytes are greater or equal to 1.0 × 10/L and 10% of leucocytes. We analyzed parameters derived from Sysmex XN analyzers to improve the management of microscopic examination for monocytosis.

Impact of therapeutic education with a written document on treatments knowledge and adherence among elderly patients. Results of a pilot study.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analysed clinical and treatment data of patients referred to the Lyon Sud University Hospital (France) for histologically proven olfactive esthesioneuroblastoma.

Splenectomy Increases Postoperative Complications Following Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy.

Background: Complete cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) is increasingly performed on patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis of various origins. Splenectomy often is required in these patients to achieve complete tumor removal. Although splenectomy has been associated with increased morbidity in many major abdominal surgeries, its effect in patients undergoing CRS + HIPEC is unknown.

[Radiotherapy of chloroma or granulocytic sarcoma: A literature review].

Granulocytic sarcoma, or chloroma, is a rare clinical entity, usually associated with a blood disease, including acute myeloid leukemia. Management strategies are based on the combination of systemic therapy and local therapy (surgery or radiation). Data for radiotherapy dose are derived from retrospective studies and case reports.

Resectability of Peritoneal Carcinomatosis: Learnings from a Prospective Cohort of 533 Consecutive Patients Selected for Cytoreductive Surgery.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors and causes of unresectability in a large cohort of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) selected for cytoreductive surgery (CRS), and to assess the contribution of the different imaging modalities to the patient-selection process.

Methods: The pre- and intraoperative data of 533 consecutive patients with PC planned for CRS at a single institution were reviewed. All patients underwent computed tomography (CT) magnetic resonance imaging and/or positron emission tomography/CT within the 2 days prior to surgery.

Dent disease is a rare X-linked tubulopathy characterized by low molecular weight proteinuria, hypercalciuria, nephrocalcinosis and/or nephrolithiasis, progressive renal failure, and variable manifestations of other proximal tubule dysfunctions. It often progresses over a few decades to chronic renal insufficiency, and therefore molecular characterization is important to allow appropriate genetic counseling. Two genetic subtypes have been described to date: Dent disease 1 is caused by mutations of the CLCN5 gene, coding for the chloride/proton exchanger ClC-5; and Dent disease 2 by mutations of the OCRL gene, coding for the inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase OCRL-1.

Atypical focal forms of Whipple's disease seen by rheumatologists.

We report two atypical cases of focal Whipple's disease with rheumatic presenting symptoms. In one of these cases, the patient presented with chronic intermittent polyarthritis, systemic inflammation, and leukocytosis. Tests were positive for rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies.

[Laparoscopic nephrectomy for polycystic kidneys: principles and results].

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and morbidity of laparoscopic nephrectomy in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPK).

Cytoreduction before allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes remains a debatable issue. After excluding patients who had received preconditioning induction chemotherapy, we analyzed 128 consecutive patients with myelodysplastic syndrome who received reduced-intensity or nonmyeloablative conditioning (RIC/NMA) allo-SCT.
