Article Synopsis
  • A study called the NUTRIREA-3 trial explored whether lower calorie and protein intake during the early treatment of critically ill patients could lead to better outcomes compared to standard nutrition guidelines.
  • Conducted in 61 ICUs across France, the trial involved over 3,000 patients who received either low or standard nutrition after being put on mechanical ventilation for shock.
  • Results showed no significant difference in 90-day mortality rates but indicated that patients on the low nutrition plan had a slightly quicker ICU discharge time and experienced fewer gastrointestinal issues and liver dysfunction.

Purpose: Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a rare, but life-threatening condition occurring among critically ill patients. Several factors have been associated with AMI, but the causal link is debated, most studies being retrospective. Among these factors, enteral nutrition (EN) could be associated with AMI, in particular among patients with shock.

Introduction: The use of peripheral indwelling arterial catheter for haemodynamic monitoring is widespread in the intensive care unit and is recommended in patients with shock. However, there is no evidence that the arterial catheter could improve patient's outcome, whereas the burden of morbidity generated is significant (pain, thrombosis, infections). We hypothesise that patients with shock may be managed without an arterial catheter.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pordegui children's hospital - a day psychiatric centre at Montauban hospital - first closed its doors in March 2019, like many ambulatory care facilities. As a result, the first confinement had a strong impact on the accessibility to care for particularly vulnerable patients. While the lockdown has been eased after a few weeks, the respect of hygiene rules and barrier gestures still impacts the therapeutic framework of the institution.

October 2021

Fédération régionale de recherche en psychiatrie et santé mentale Hauts-de-France (F2RSM Psy), 211, rue du Général-Leclerc, 59350 Saint-André-lez-Lille, France; Université de Lille, Inserm, CHU Lille, U1172-LilNCog - Lille Neuroscience & Cognition, 59000 Lille, France. Electronic address:

Introduction: Despite its effectiveness and good tolerance, electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) is under-used in current clinical practice probably because of stigma and the negative image of this treatment. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an educational video on the representations of ECT among psychiatrists and psychiatric residents in the North and in Occitanie districts of France.

Method: We evaluated the representations of ECT through the Questionnaire on Attitudes and Knowledge of ECT (QuAKE) before (T0) and after (T1) viewing a short educational video.

Introduction: International guidelines include early nutritional support (≤48 hour after admission), 20-25 kcal/kg/day, and 1.2-2 g/kg/day protein at the acute phase of critical illness. Recent data challenge the appropriateness of providing standard amounts of calories and protein during acute critical illness.

Interscalene brachial plexus block has been widely used in shoulder surgery. We report one case of long-term phrenic palsy following ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block and we will discuss the possible etiology and mechanism of this disability. For painful shoulder surgery, ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block remains topical.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the safety of the direct oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban compared to vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in geriatric patients (aged ≥80) with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF).
  • Using data from 33 geriatric centers, researchers followed 908 patients on VKAs and 995 on rivaroxaban for up to 12 months to compare bleeding risks and other health outcomes.
  • Results showed that rivaroxaban users experienced significantly lower risks of major and intracerebral bleeding compared to VKA users, suggesting it may be a safer option for older adults in preventing strokes.

Background: Whether the route of early feeding affects outcomes of patients with severe critical illnesses is controversial. We hypothesised that outcomes were better with early first-line enteral nutrition than with early first-line parenteral nutrition.

Methods: In this randomised, controlled, multicentre, open-label, parallel-group study (NUTRIREA-2 trial) done at 44 French intensive-care units (ICUs), adults (18 years or older) receiving invasive mechanical ventilation and vasopressor support for shock were randomly assigned (1:1) to either parenteral nutrition or enteral nutrition, both targeting normocaloric goals (20-25 kcal/kg per day), within 24 h after intubation.
