Background: Any surgical procedure carries a risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE), albeit variable. Improvements in medical and surgical practices and the shortening of care pathways due to the development of day surgery and enhanced recovery after surgery, have reduced the perioperative risk for VTE.
Objective: A collaborative working group of experts in perioperative haemostasis updated in 2024 the recommendations for the Prevention of perioperative venous thromboembolism published in 2011.

Purpose: Current clinical risk stratification methods for localized prostate cancer are suboptimal, leading to over- and undertreatment. Recently, machine learning approaches using digital histopathology have shown superior prognostic ability in phase III trials. This study aims to develop a clinically usable risk grouping system using multimodal artificial intelligence (MMAI) models that outperform current National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) risk groups.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is associated with a high rate of disease recurrence following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Type 2 disease is associated with a higher incidence of recurrence and is believed to impact disease resolution via interference with epithelial healing and pathogen immunity. We wished to verify if perioperative control of Type 2 inflammation with an anti-IL4/IL13 targeting monoclonal antibody and during the resolution period following surgery leads to better control of the disease long term.

Objective: To examine the associations between food security status and dietary patterns among first-time food-aid users.
Methods: From September 2018 to January 2020, a sample of 1001 newly registered food-aid users from 106 community-based food donation organizations were recruited across urban, rural, and peri-urban areas in four administrative regions of the province of Quebec, Canada. The Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) and the Short Diet Questionnaire (SDQ) were used to assess food security status and food intake, respectively.

With greater population density, the likelihood of viral outbreaks achieving pandemic status is increasing. However, current viral screening techniques use specific reagents, and as viruses mutate, test accuracy decreases. Here, we present the first real-time, reagent-free, portable analysis platform for viral detection in liquid saliva, using COVID-19 as a proof-of-concept.

Design: An in-depth mixed-method case study (quantitative and qualitative). Individual interviews were conducted with members of the SCF team to assess the activities and areas for improvement and with co-managers of active COVID-19 units.

Introduction: Kidney transplant recipients with graft failure are a growing cohort of patients who experience high morbidity and mortality. Limited evidence guides their care delivery and patient perspective to improve care processes is lacking. We conducted an in-depth exploration of how individuals experience graft failure, and the specific research question was: "What impact does the loss of an allograft have on their lives?"
Methods: We adopted an interpretive descriptive methodological design.

Introduction: Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is the best treatment option for patients with kidney failure. Efforts to increase LDKT have focused on microlevel interventions and the need for systems thinking has been highlighted. We aimed to identify and compare health system-level attributes and processes that are facilitators and barriers to LDKT.

Rita Levi-Montalcini (RLM) is recognized as a prestigious and renowned researcher of her time. She was the fourth woman to earn the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1986 for the discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF). We review her biography and scientific discovery, and provide an example of why her discovery is still important.

Cough is a common and commonly ignored symptom of lung disease. Cough is often perceived as difficult to quantify, frequently self-limiting, and non-specific. However, cough has a central role in the clinical detection of many lung diseases including tuberculosis (TB), which remains the leading infectious disease killer worldwide.

Background: Worsening renal function (WRF) is common in hospitalized patients being treated for acute heart failure. However, discriminating clinically significant WRF remains challenging. In patients hospitalized with acute heart failure, we evaluated if blood and urine biomarkers of cardiac and kidney dysfunction were associated with adverse outcomes.

Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) shortage represents an emerging issue in transfusion medicine. Limited data are available to determine effective strategies for optimal use. The objective of this retrospective observational study was to determine the impact of institutional measures on IVIG use at a large academic center.

This analysis aimed to (1) identify longitudinal joint trajectories of participation in organized and unorganized physical activity contexts, and level of daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and (2) assess whether basic psychological need satisfaction during adolescence differentiates between membership in different physical activity trajectories. Participants (n = 888; 56% girls) reported their involvement in 36 different physical activities, level of MVPA, and their perceived satisfaction of competence, autonomy, and relatedness satisfaction in physical activity up to three times per year, over 8 years (from ages 10 to 17 years). Group-based multi-trajectory models were used to identify longitudinal joint trajectories of physical activity participation.

Introduction: Strong evidence supports the importance of potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia, with sensory loss, particularly visual and hearing impairment, being prominent among them. While single sensory impairment has been widely investigated, the influence of concomitant visual and hearing impairment is still not clear. Thus, in this systematic review, we aim to evaluate the risk of developing all-cause dementia due to dual sensory (visual and hearing) impairment and to comprehensively explore possible sources of heterogeneity.

Foundation vision-language models are currently transforming computer vision, and are on the rise in medical imaging fueled by their very promising generalization capabilities. However, the initial attempts to transfer this new paradigm to medical imaging have shown less impressive performances than those observed in other domains, due to the significant domain shift and the complex, expert domain knowledge inherent to medical-imaging tasks. Motivated by the need for domain-expert foundation models, we present FLAIR, a pre-trained vision-language model for universal retinal fundus image understanding.
