Synchrotron microbeam radiotherapy (MRT), which has entered the clinical transfer phase, requires the development of appropriate quality assurance (QA) tools due to very high dose rates and spatial hyperfractionation. A microstrip plastic scintillating detector system with associated modules was proposed in the context of real-time MRT QA. A prototype of such a system with 105 scintillating microstrips was developed and tested under MRT conditions.

  • Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically children with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), have a higher risk of thromboembolic events (TE), but more information is needed regarding the incidence and risk factors for better preventative care.
  • The study followed 1,344 pediatric patients from 1988 to 2013, finding very few instances of arterial (ATE) and venous thromboembolic events (VTE) during the follow-up period, with VTE being more frequent in specific circumstances.
  • Overall, while the risk of TE in this population is low, it was significantly linked to periods of active disease, post-surgery conditions, and hospitalization, while treatment with

  • Researchers studied strokes from 1990 to 2021 to understand how many people get them and how they are affected around the world.
  • In 2021, strokes caused about 7.3 million deaths and were a major cause of health problems, especially in specific regions like Southeast Asia and Oceania.
  • There are differences in stroke risks based on where people live and their age, and some areas actually saw more strokes happening since 2015.

Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale UA7 Synchrotron Radiation for Biomedicine, Université Grenoble Alpes, 38400 Saint-Martin-d'Hères, France.

Synchrotron Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) has repeatedly proven its superiority compared with conventional radiotherapy for glioma control in preclinical research. The clinical transfer phase of MRT has recently gained momentum; seven dogs with suspected glioma were treated under clinical conditions to determine the feasibility and safety of MRT. We administered a single fraction of 3D-conformal, image-guided MRT.

Neurologic Changes Induced by Whole-Brain Synchrotron Microbeam Irradiation: 10-Month Behavioral and Veterinary Follow-Up.

Université Grenoble Alpes, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale UA7 Synchrotron Radiation for Biomedicine, Saint-Martin d'Hères, France; Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Grenoble Alpes, Maquis du Grésivaudan, La Tronche, France.

Purpose: Novel radiation therapy approaches have increased the therapeutic efficacy for malignant brain tumors over the past decades, but the balance between therapeutic gain and radiotoxicity remains a medical hardship. Synchrotron microbeam radiation therapy, an innovative technique, deposes extremely high (peak) doses in micron-wide, parallel microbeam paths, whereas the diffusing interbeam (valley) doses lie in the range of conventional radiation therapy doses. In this study, we evaluated normal tissue toxicity of whole-brain microbeam irradiation (MBI) versus that of a conventional hospital broad beam (hBB).

Electronic address:

Neurovascular disease such as symptomatic stroke, silent brain infarcts and vascular cognitive impairment are common complications of sickle cell disease (SCD) that can have devastating consequences on quality of life, employment, and social functioning.  Early recognition of neurovascular disease is a prerequisite for the timely optimization of medical care and to connect patients to adaptive resources. While cognitive impairment has been well described in children, currently available data are limited in adults.

Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is a radiotherapy technique combining spatial fractionation of the dose distribution on a micrometric scale, X-rays in the 50-500 keV range and dose rates up to 16 × 10 Gy s. Nowadays, in vivo dosimetry remains a challenge due to the ultra-high radiation fluxes involved and the need for high-spatial-resolution detectors. The aim here was to develop a striped diamond portal detector enabling online microbeam monitoring during synchrotron MRT treatments.

Purpose: Patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) have long been advised to avoid exercise in fear of deterioration in right-sided heart function. Since the 2009 European Society of Cardiology guidelines, rehabilitation in expert centers is considered to have a specific role in care of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). We report routine rehabilitation effects in patients with PH as a component of real-life multimodal treatment.

Multiomic analysis of malignant pleural mesothelioma identifies molecular axes and specialized tumor profiles driving intertumor heterogeneity.

Nat Genet

Rare Cancers Genomics Team, Genomic Epidemiology Branch, International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, Lyon, France.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer with rising incidence and challenging clinical management. Through a large series of whole-genome sequencing data, integrated with transcriptomic and epigenomic data using multiomics factor analysis, we demonstrate that the current World Health Organization classification only accounts for up to 10% of interpatient molecular differences. Instead, the MESOMICS project paves the way for a morphomolecular classification of MPM based on four dimensions: ploidy, tumor cell morphology, adaptive immune response and CpG island methylator profile.
