After liver transplantation (LT), the role of preformed donor-specific anti-human leukocyte antigen antibodies (pDSAs) remains incompletely understood. We conducted a retrospective, case-control analysis to determine the impact of pDSAs after LT in 3 French transplant centers (Bordeaux, Lyon, and Toulouse). Among the 1788 LTs performed during the study period, 142 (7.

In response to the complexity of medical care in oncology, 2 years ago, we designed a new teaching method (SPOC, Small Private Online Course) to improve cancer treatment and its management by emphasizing the community-hospital interface. The educational objective of this study was to evaluate after 1 year if the interest for this teaching remained constant over the long term to meet both educational and financial requirements. We designed a questionnaire including 18 questions grouped in 3 main parts describing the profile of the participants, his/her own experience, and the current utilization of the SPOC.

Lowering Portal Pressure Improves Outcomes of Patients With Cirrhosis, With or Without Ascites: A Meta-Analysis.

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol

February 2020

Section of Digestive Diseases, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut; Section of Digestive Diseases, VA Connecticut Healthcare System, West Haven, Connecticut. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: In unselected patients with cirrhosis, those with reductions in hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) to below a defined threshold (responders) have a reduced risk of variceal hemorrhage (VH) and death. We performed a meta-analysis to compare this effect in patients with vs without ascites.

Methods: We collected data from 15 studies of primary or secondary prophylaxis of VH that reported data on VH and death in responders vs nonresponders.

Purpose: The wide heterogeneity in multiple myeloma (MM) outcome is driven mainly by cytogenetic abnormalities. The current definition of high-risk profile is restrictive and oversimplified. To adapt MM treatment to risk, we need to better define a cytogenetic risk classification.

Département de Chirurgie Gynécologique et Oncologique, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire-Toulouse, Institut Universitaire du Cancer de Toulouse-Oncopole, 1 avenue Irène Joliot-Curie, 31059, Toulouse Cedex 9, France.

Purpose: Desmoid tumors (DTs) are rare tumors that originate from myofibroblastic tissue. Recently, initial wait and see was recommended (ESMO guidelines Ann Oncol 2017) in the most frequent locations. This study investigates the outcome of breast desmoid tumor (BDT) according to the initial strategy.

Introduction: Lightning strike victims often suffer repercussions. Although a lightning strike constitutes a severe traumatic event, there is a lack of data about potential psychological sequelae. This is precisely the context in which we assessed the prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Episode (MDE) in a group of lightning strike victims.

Background: Ventricular fibrillation (VF) storm after myocardial infarction (MI) is a life-threatening condition that necessitates multiple defibrillations. Catheter ablation is a potentially effective treatment strategy for VF storm refractory to optimal medical treatment. However, its impact on patient survival has not been verified in a large population.

December 2018

STROMALab, Université de Toulouse, CNRS 11 Équipe de Recherche Labellisée 5311, Établissement Français du Sang, École Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse, INSERM U1031, Université Paul Sabatier, 31100 Toulouse, France;

Mast cells (MC) are innate immune cells involved in many physiological and pathological processes. However, studies of MC function and biology are hampered by the difficulties to obtain human primary MC. To solve this problem, we established a new method to produce easily and rapidly high numbers of MC for in vitro studies using human adipose tissue, which is an abundant and easy access tissue.

Reduced Relapse Incidence with FLAMSA-RIC Compared with Busulfan/Fludarabine for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Patients in First or Second Complete Remission: A Study from the Acute Leukemia Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant

November 2018

Hematology Division and Bone Marrow Transplantation, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel-Hashomer and Tel Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel; Acute Leukemia Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Paris, France.

Busulfan/fludarabine (BuFlu) is a widely used conditioning regimen for patients with myeloid malignancies. The sequential FLAMSA (fludarabine + Ara-C + amsacrine chemotherapy) protocol followed by either cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation (FLAMSA-TBI) or cyclophosphamide and busulfan (FLAMSA-Bu) has shown remarkable activity in high-risk acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) patients. Here we compare the outcomes of AML patients transplanted in first complete remission (CR1) or second complete remission (CR2) after conditioning with BuFlu or FLAMSA.

August 2018

Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris, Hôpital Jean Verdier, Service d'Hépatologie, Bondy, France; Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, Functional Genomics of Solid Tumors, Université Paris Descartes, Université Paris Diderot, Université Paris, Labex Oncoimmunology, Equipe labellisée Ligue contre le Cancer, Paris, France.

Background & Aims: Semi-annual surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is recommended for patients with cirrhosis. We aimed to determine how compliance with HCC surveillance guidelines affects survival times of patients with hepatitis C virus- or hepatitis B virus-associated compensated cirrhosis who developed HCC.

Methods: We collected data from the prospective ANRS CO12 CirVir study, from March 2006 through June 2012, on 1671 patients with biopsy-proven viral cirrhosis and no previous liver complications who were undergoing surveillance for HCC at 35 centers in France.

Bone degradation machinery of osteoclasts: An HIV-1 target that contributes to bone loss.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

March 2018

Institut de Pharmacologie et de Biologie Structurale, Université de Toulouse, CNRS, Université Paul Sabatier, 31400 Toulouse Cedex 4, France;

Bone deficits are frequent in HIV-1-infected patients. We report here that osteoclasts, the cells specialized in bone resorption, are infected by HIV-1 in vivo in humanized mice and ex vivo in human joint biopsies. In vitro, infection of human osteoclasts occurs at different stages of osteoclastogenesis via cell-free viruses and, more efficiently, by transfer from infected T cells.

Background: Alzheimer's disease is characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. The humanized monoclonal antibody solanezumab was designed to increase the clearance from the brain of soluble Aβ, peptides that may lead to toxic effects in the synapses and precede the deposition of fibrillary amyloid.

Methods: We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial involving patients with mild dementia due to Alzheimer's disease, defined as a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 20 to 26 (on a scale from 0 to 30, with higher scores indicating better cognition) and with amyloid deposition shown by means of florbetapir positron-emission tomography or Aβ1-42 measurements in cerebrospinal fluid.
