Small Private Online Course in Teaching Oncology-Feedback After 1 Year: What Lessons?

In response to the complexity of medical care in oncology, 2 years ago, we designed a new teaching method (SPOC, Small Private Online Course) to improve cancer treatment and its management by emphasizing the community-hospital interface. The educational objective of this study was to evaluate after 1 year if the interest for this teaching remained constant over the long term to meet both educational and financial requirements. We designed a questionnaire including 18 questions grouped in 3 main parts describing the profile of the participants, his/her own experience, and the current utilization of the SPOC.

Purpose: We assessed the added value of concomitant systematic biopsy for final grade group prediction in patients with positive magnetic resonance imaging who were undergoing targeted biopsy.

Materials And Methods: Included in study were 478 consecutive patients with prebiopsy positive multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and a greater than 10-core systematic biopsy combined with fusion targeted biopsy who underwent radical prostatectomy. The primary end point was the grade group concordance between biopsy and radical prostatectomy pathology according to the biopsy technique.

Lowering Portal Pressure Improves Outcomes of Patients With Cirrhosis, With or Without Ascites: A Meta-Analysis.

Background & Aims: In unselected patients with cirrhosis, those with reductions in hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) to below a defined threshold (responders) have a reduced risk of variceal hemorrhage (VH) and death. We performed a meta-analysis to compare this effect in patients with vs without ascites.

Methods: We collected data from 15 studies of primary or secondary prophylaxis of VH that reported data on VH and death in responders vs nonresponders.

The aim of this study was to investigate trends of atropinic exposure in patients ≥65 years in France between 2006 and 2015. A repeated cross-sectional study was performed quarterly from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2015, in the 'Echantillon Généraliste des Bénéficiaires (EGB)', a representative sample of the French population.

To solve this problem, we established a new method to produce easily and rapidly high numbers of MC for in vitro studies using human adipose tissue, which is an abundant and easy access tissue.

Reduced Relapse Incidence with FLAMSA-RIC Compared with Busulfan/Fludarabine for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Patients in First or Second Complete Remission: A Study from the Acute Leukemia Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Busulfan/fludarabine (BuFlu) is a widely used conditioning regimen for patients with myeloid malignancies. The sequential FLAMSA (fludarabine + Ara-C + amsacrine chemotherapy) protocol followed by either cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation (FLAMSA-TBI) or cyclophosphamide and busulfan (FLAMSA-Bu) has shown remarkable activity in high-risk acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) patients. Purpose: Our objective was to assess the prevalence of intraoperative cyst rupture and its impact on oncologic outcomes.

Materials And Methods: All patients who underwent partial nephrectomy for a cystic renal mass via an open or robot-assisted approach at a total of 8 academic institutions were included in this retrospective study. All operative reports were carefully reviewed and any description of cyst rupture, cyst effraction or local spillage intraoperatively was recorded as cyst rupture.

Compliance With Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance Guidelines Associated With Increased Lead-Time Adjusted Survival of Patients With Compensated Viral Cirrhosis: A Multi-Center Cohort Study.

Background & Aims: Semi-annual surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is recommended for patients with cirrhosis. We aimed to determine how compliance with HCC surveillance guidelines affects survival times of patients with hepatitis C virus- or hepatitis B virus-associated compensated cirrhosis who developed HCC.

Methods: We collected data from the prospective ANRS CO12 CirVir study, from March 2006 through June 2012, on 1671 patients with biopsy-proven viral cirrhosis and no previous liver complications who were undergoing surveillance for HCC at 35 centers in France.

Background: Appendectomy is considered the gold standard treatment for acute appendicitis. Recently the need for surgery has been challenged in both adults and children. In children there is growing clinician, patient and parental interest in non-operative treatment of acute appendicitis with antibiotics as opposed to surgery.

Sidus Stem-Free Shoulder System for primary osteoarthritis: short-term results of a multicenter study.

Background: The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to evaluate clinical and radiologic results of a new metaphyseal anchored system. This system features a different anchor geometry that potentially leads to better bony integration and less loosening.

Methods: From November 2012 until December 2015, 148 patients (151 shoulders) were treated with the Sidus Stem-Free Shoulder System at 9 centers in Europe.

Bone degradation machinery of osteoclasts: An HIV-1 target that contributes to bone loss.

Bone deficits are frequent in HIV-1-infected patients. We report here that osteoclasts, the cells specialized in bone resorption, are infected by HIV-1 in vivo in humanized mice and ex vivo in human joint biopsies. In vitro, infection of human osteoclasts occurs at different stages of osteoclastogenesis via cell-free viruses and, more efficiently, by transfer from infected T cells.

Trial of Solanezumab for Mild Dementia Due to Alzheimer's Disease.

Background: Alzheimer's disease is characterized by amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. The humanized monoclonal antibody solanezumab was designed to increase the clearance from the brain of soluble Aβ, peptides that may lead to toxic effects in the synapses and precede the deposition of fibrillary amyloid.

Methods: We conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial involving patients with mild dementia due to Alzheimer's disease, defined as a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 20 to 26 (on a scale from 0 to 30, with higher scores indicating better cognition) and with amyloid deposition shown by means of florbetapir positron-emission tomography or Aβ1-42 measurements in cerebrospinal fluid.

Drug-eluting stents in elderly patients with coronary artery disease (SENIOR): a randomised single-blind trial.

Background: Elderly patients regularly receive bare-metal stents (BMS) instead of drug-eluting stents (DES) to shorten the duration of double antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). The aim of this study was to compare outcomes between these two types of stents with a short duration of DAPT in such patients.

Methods: In this randomised single-blind trial, we recruited patients from 44 centres in nine countries.

Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) plus docetaxel is the standard of care in fit men with metastatic castration-naive prostate cancer (mCNPC) following results from GETUG-AFU 15, CHAARTED, and STAMPEDE. No data are available on the efficacy of treatments used for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) in men treated upfront with ADT plus docetaxel for mCNPC.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and tolerance of subsequent treatments in patients treated upfront with chemo-hormonal therapy for mCNPC.

Optimization of drug therapy in elderly individuals admitted to a geriatric unit.

Background: A substantial share of adverse drug events involves inappropriate prescribing (IP). Specialized geriatric units are supposed to pay particular attention to prescribing appropriateness and to promoting a higher prescribing quality.
