Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a significant global health concern linked to various cancers, particularly cervical cancer. Timely and accurate detection of HPV is crucial for effective management and prevention strategies. Traditional laboratory-based HPV testing methods often suffer from limitations such as long turnaround times, restricted accessibility, and the need for trained personnel, especially in resource-limited settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic hypothyroidism in children can lead to growth issues, delayed skeletal maturity, and delayed puberty, as seen in the Van Wyk-Grumbach syndrome (VWGS), first reported in 1960.* -
  • VWGS presents with symptoms like early breast development, galactorrhea, delayed bone age, and pituitary enlargement, and many cases share similar clinical and biochemical features, such as elevated TSH and low thyroxine levels.* -
  • Treatment with thyroid hormone replacement has been effective in reversing the symptoms of VWGS, resulting in normal growth and thyroid function within six months for the patients studied.*

Nephrotic syndrome and adrenoleukodystrophy in a 5-year-old boy.

Pediatr Nephrol

December 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint-Etienne, Avenue Albert Raimond, Saint-Priest en Jarez, 42270, France.

Nephrotic syndrome is a common condition characterized by filtration of large amounts of protein, hypoalbuminemia, reduced plasma oncotic pressure, sodium retention, and edema. The mechanism responsible for sodium retention in this condition is still controversial. Two different pathophysiological pathways have been proposed to explain edema formation: activation of neurohumoral effector mechanisms, including the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, or abnormal intrinsic/primary renal sodium retention.

Intracranial pressure monitoring with and without brain tissue oxygen pressure monitoring for severe traumatic brain injury in France (OXY-TC): an open-label, randomised controlled superiority trial.

Lancet Neurol

November 2023

Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Grenoble, Universitaire Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble, France; INSERM U1216, Grenoble Institut Neurosciences, Grenoble, France.

Background: Optimisation of brain oxygenation might improve neurological outcome after traumatic brain injury. The OXY-TC trial explored the superiority of a strategy combining intracranial pressure and brain tissue oxygen pressure (PbtO) monitoring over a strategy of intracranial pressure monitoring only to reduce the proportion of patients with poor neurological outcome at 6 months.

Methods: We did an open-label, randomised controlled superiority trial at 25 French tertiary referral centres.

Background: Differences in the distribution of individual-level clinical risk factors across regions do not fully explain the observed global disparities in COVID-19 outcomes. We aimed to investigate the associations between environmental and societal factors and country-level variations in mortality attributed to COVID-19 among people with rheumatic disease globally.

Methods: In this observational study, we derived individual-level data on adults (aged 18-99 years) with rheumatic disease and a confirmed status of their highest COVID-19 severity level from the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance (GRA) registry, collected between March 12, 2020, and Aug 27, 2021.

Background: Owing to growing number of therapeutic options with similar efficacy and safety, we compared the acceptability of therapeutic maintenance regimens in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Methods: From a nationwide study (24 public or private centers), IBD patients were consecutively included for 6 weeks. A dedicated questionnaire including acceptability numerical scales (ANS) ranging from 0 to 10 (highest acceptability) was administered to both patients and related physicians.

Background: We assessed prevalence of multimorbidity (MM) according to year of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis in elderly people living with HIV (PLWH).

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of MM in PLWH aged ≥70 years from the Dat'AIDS French multicenter cohort. MM was defined as at least 3 coexistent morbidities of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, non-AIDS cancer, chronic renal failure, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, obesity, undernutrition, or hypercholesterolemia.

Background: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been emerging in neonatal medicine. It may help for the early diagnosis of pathology and estimation of autonomous maturation. There is a lack of standardization and automation in the selection of the sequences to analyze and some features have not been explored in this specific population.

Background: The Ottawa score was previously developed to predict recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in cancer patients with VTE. The performance of this score in patients with incidental VTE is currently unclear.

Aim: To evaluate the performance of the Ottawa risk score in cancer patients with incidental pulmonary embolism included in an international, prospective, observational cohort study.

Purpose: Pulmonary embolism is incidentally diagnosed in up to 5% of patients with cancer on routine imaging scans. The clinical relevance and optimal therapy for incidental pulmonary embolism, particularly distal clots, is unclear. The aim of the current study was to assess current treatment strategies and the long-term clinical outcomes of incidentally detected pulmonary embolism in patients with cancer.

Purpose: The wide heterogeneity in multiple myeloma (MM) outcome is driven mainly by cytogenetic abnormalities. The current definition of high-risk profile is restrictive and oversimplified. To adapt MM treatment to risk, we need to better define a cytogenetic risk classification.

The need to accurately identify cancer outpatients at high risk of thrombotic complications is still unmet. In a prospective, multicenter cohort study (ONCOlogie et Chambres ImPlantables [ONCOCIP]), consecutive adult patients with a solid tumor and implanted port underwent 12-month follow-up. Our primary objective was to identify risk factors for (1) catheter-related thrombosis, defined as ipsilateral symptomatic upper-limb deep-vein thrombosis with or without pulmonary embolism, and (2) venous thromboembolism other than catheter-related, defined as any symptomatic superficial- or deep-vein thrombosis (other than catheter-related) or pulmonary embolism, and incidental pulmonary embolism.

European guidelines on perioperative venous thromboembolism prophylaxis: Inferior vena cava filters.

Eur J Anaesthesiol

February 2018

From the Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe, València, Spain (RFC), Unité de Recherche Clinique, Innovation et Pharmacologie, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint-Etienne, Saint-Etienne, France (PM) and Department of Anesthesia, Juliane Marie Centre, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark (AA).

: The indications for the use of an inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) in the context of deep venous thrombosis to prevent pulmonary embolism remain controversial. Despite wide use in clinical practice, great variation exists in national and international guidelines in regard to the indications. In addition, clinical practice is based on poor-quality data from trauma and bariatric surgery with a high incidence of complications.

The neonatal arterial cerebral infarction is a clinical model for the study of development after early brain damage. The data from the AVCnn cohort, a French multicentre study, show that severe sequelae are rare while the least severe involve numerous areas of activity and concern the majority of children. The cosegregation of different forms of deficiency is significant.
