There is an increasing demand for real-world data pertaining to the usage of cancer treatments, especially in settings where no standard treatment is specifically recommended. This study presents the first real-world analysis of third-line treatment patterns in HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (mBC) patients in Canada. The purpose was to assess evolution of clinical practice and identify unmet needs in post-second-line therapy.

Many patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (LR MDS) require long-term red blood cell (RBC) transfusions to manage anemia. The consequences of RBC transfusions in LR MDS with ring sideroblasts (LR MDS-RS) are not well known. We estimated the association between cumulative RBC dose density and clinical and patient-reported outcomes using data from the MDS-CAN registry for patients enrolled between January 2008 and December 2018.

Patients with lower-risk (LR) myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) with ring sideroblasts (RS) have better prognosis than those without RS, but how they fare over time is not fully understood. This study's objective was to assess the natural history of LR MDS with RS ≥5% using MDS-CAN registry individual data. Kaplan-Meier estimates and generalized linear mixed models were used to describe time-to-event outcomes and continuous outcomes, respectively.

Background: The LOVIT (Lessening Organ Dysfunction with Vitamin C) trial is a blinded multicenter randomized clinical trial comparing high-dose intravenous vitamin C to placebo in patients admitted to the intensive care unit with proven or suspected infection as the main diagnosis and receiving a vasopressor.
Objective: We aim to describe a prespecified statistical analysis plan (SAP) for the LOVIT trial prior to unblinding and locking of the trial database.
Methods: The SAP was designed by the LOVIT principal investigators and statisticians, and approved by the steering committee and coinvestigators.

Maritime Strategy for Patient Oriented Research Support Unit, Université de Moncton, Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.
Background: Autism is a developmental disability that affects how individuals experience the world. Each Autistic individual experiences Autism in their own way, meaning that the level and type of assistance in their everyday lives vary widely. A shortage of programs and services tailored to Autistic adults exists worldwide, and the current gap between needs and services is likely to worsen as the growing number of Autistic children being diagnosed reach adulthood.

Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit, Université de Moncton, Moncton, NB Canada.
Background: Little research describes the everyday challenges and needs of autistic adults. In order to fill this data gap, the CONtiNuity of carE and support for autistiC adulTs (CONNECT) project set out to learn about the health and well-being of autistic adults as well as their service and support needs. To do so, CONNECT welcomed autistic adults and caregivers of autistic adults as members of the research team, alongside researchers, policy-makers, service providers and health professionals.

With emergence of pandemic COVID-19, rapid and accurate diagnostic testing is essential. This study compared laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) used for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in Canadian hospital and public health laboratories, and some commercially available real-time RT-PCR assays. Overall, analytical sensitivities were equivalent between LDTs and most commercially available methods.

Background: Nivolumab was the first immuno-oncology agent available for the treatment of lung cancer in Canada. In the present study, we evaluated the real-world benefit of nivolumab in Canadian patients with lung cancer.
Methods: Patients included in the cohort were identified from a registry of patients treated through expanded access to nivolumab before and after Health Canada approval.
Cestodes are emerging agents of severe opportunistic infections among immunocompromised patients. We describe the first case of human infection, with the recently-proposed genus Versteria causing an invasive, tumor-like hepatic infection with regional and distant extension in a 53-year-old female kidney transplant recipient from Atlantic Canada.

The goal of this document was to provide Canadian laboratories with a framework for consistent reporting and monitoring of multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO) and extensively drug resistant organisms (XDRO) for common gram-negative pathogens. This is the final edition of the interim recommendations, which were modified after one year of broad consultative review. This edition represents a consensus of peer-reviewed information and was co-authored by the Canadian Public Health Laboratory Network and the Canadian Association of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

As clinical laboratories transition to using culture-independent detection test (CIDT) panels for cases of acute gastroenteritis, culture of clinical specimens is becoming less common. The reduction in bacterial cultures available for public health activities is expected to hinder surveillance and outbreak response by public health laboratories at the local, provincial, national and international levels. These recommendations are intended to serve as guidelines for the implementation of CIDT panels in frontline laboratories in Canada.

Prediction of response to erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESAs) in anemic MDS patients is often based on the Nordic score. We wished to validate the Nordic score (IWG 2006 response criteria) in a larger cohort and determine if other variables such as IPSS/IPSS-R, ferritin, LDH, and a novel European ESA response score (Santini 2013) were of prognostic importance. We analyzed 208 ESA-treated MDS patients (WHO 2008 criteria) from a prospective registry.

Objective: To evaluate efficacy of a minimal surface area, vaginally-installed polypropylene tape (VPT), avoiding insertion on the incision line to treat an anterior, posterior or anteroposterior vaginal wall prolapse.
Study Design: Patients with an anterior, posterior or anteroposterior vaginal wall prolapse waiting for surgical treatment were included in the study. Primary outcome was the incidence of prolapse recurrence reported with combined outcome measures and was reported with Kaplan-Meier cumulative incidence.

(Ahiflower) oil is a dietary oil rich in stearidonic acid (20% SDA; 18:4 -3). The present randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial investigated the effects of three Ahiflower oil dosages on omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of plasma and mononuclear cells (MCs) and of the highest Ahiflower dosage on stimulated cytokine production in blood. Healthy subjects ( = 88) consumed 9.

Unlabelled: Little is known about the effects of frailty, disability and physical functioning on the clinical outcomes for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We investigated the predictive value of these factors on overall survival (OS) in 445 consecutive patients with MDS and chronic monomyelocytic leukaemia (CMML) enrolled in a multi-centre prospective national registry. Frailty, comorbidity, instrumental activities of daily living, disability, quality of life, fatigue and physical performance measures were evaluated at baseline and were added as covariates to conventional MDS-related factors as predictors of OS in Cox proportional hazards models.

Enrichment of tissues with ≥20-carbon n-3 PUFA like EPA is associated with positive cardiovascular outcomes. Stearidonic acid (SDA; 18 : 4n-3) and α-linolenic acid (ALA; 18 : 3n-3) are plant-derived dietary n-3 PUFA; however, direct comparisons of their impact on tissue n-3 PUFA content are lacking. Ahiflower(®) oil extracted from Buglossoides arvensis seeds is the richest known non-genetically modified source of dietary SDA.

Bacteremia due to Cloacibacillus species is poorly described. We present three cases involving either Cloacibacillus evryensis or Cloacibacillus porcorum. The isolates were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and were susceptible to antibiotics commonly used for anaerobic infections.
