Public Health Department, Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) de Bordeaux, University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France; Bordeaux Population Health Research Centre, University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France.

Background: Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations in health care. Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) enables more precise ocular incisions and lens fragmentation than does phacoemulsification cataract surgery (PCS). We hypothesised that FLACS might improve outcomes in cataract surgery compared with PCS despite having higher costs.

Background & Aims: Gastric carcinoma is related mostly to CagA+-Helicobacter pylori infection, which disrupts the gastric mucosa turnover and elicits an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and preneoplastic transdifferentiation. The tumor suppressor Hippo pathway controls stem cell homeostasis; its core, constituted by the large tumor suppressor 2 (LATS2) kinase and its substrate Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1), was investigated in this context.

Methods: Hippo, EMT, and intestinal metaplasia marker expression were investigated by transcriptomic and immunostaining analyses in human gastric AGS and MKN74 and nongastric immortalized RPE1 and HMLE epithelial cell lines challenged by H pylori, and on gastric tissues of infected patients and mice.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) refers to brain dysfunction, including delirium, occurs during severe infection and is associated with development of post-traumatic stress disorder. SAE has been proposed to be related to reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF), blood-brain barrier breakdown (BBB), white matter edema and disruption and glia cell activation, but their exact relationships remain to be determined. In the present work, we set out to study CBF using Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) and grey and white matter structure with T2- and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) in rats with cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced encephalopathy.

Osteomas of the middle ear are rare benign tumors. Their consequences and symptoms are due to their specific location, such as the promontory or the epitympanum and their contact with the facial nerve, the semicircular canal, the ossicles, and the oval or round windows. We report a very unusual case of middle ear osteoma (MEO) in a 23-year-old male patient causing a right mixed hearing loss by contacting and overwhelming the incus and stapes.

Article Synopsis
  • Cytoreductive nephrectomy has been the traditional treatment for metastatic renal-cell carcinoma, but the effectiveness of targeted therapies like sunitinib is being reevaluated.
  • In a phase 3 trial, 450 patients were randomly assigned to either undergo nephrectomy followed by sunitinib or receive sunitinib alone, with the primary goal of measuring overall survival rates.
  • Results indicated that sunitinib alone provided similar overall survival rates compared to the combination of nephrectomy and sunitinib, suggesting that surgery may not be necessary for all patients with this type of cancer.

June 2018

INCIA, Institut de Neurosciences Cognitive et Intégrative d'Aquitaine, UMR 5287, Bordeaux, France.

Although the immune and nervous systems have long been considered independent biological systems, they turn out to mingle and interact extensively. The present review summarizes recent insights into the neural pathways activated by and involved in infection-induced inflammation and discusses potential clinical applications. The simplest activation concerns a reflex action within C-fibers leading to neurogenic inflammation.

To better understand brain dysfunction during sepsis, cerebral arterial blood flow was assessed with Phase Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging, perfusion with Arterial Spin Labeling and structure with diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in rats after intraperitoneal administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharides. Although cerebral arterial flow was not altered, perfusion of the corpus callosum region and diffusion parallel to its fibers were higher after lipopolysaccharide administration as compared to saline injection. In parallel, lipopolysaccharide induced perivascular immunoglobulin-immunoreactivity in white matter.

Endothelial cells lining new blood vessels that develop during inflammatory disorders or cancers act as doors that either allow or block access to the tumor or inflamed organ. Recent data show that these endothelial cells in cancer tissues and inflamed tissues of lupus patients overexpress CD95L, the biological role of which is a subject of debate. The receptor CD95 (also named Fas or apoptosis antigen 1) belongs to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily.

Case-Finding for Persistent Airway Obstruction in Farmers: A Questionnaire With Optimal Diagnosis Criteria.

Am J Prev Med

December 2017

Equipe d'Acceuil (EA) 3920, Université de Franche-Comté, Besançon, France; Service d'Explorations Fonctionnelles Respiratoires, CHRU, Besançon, France. Electronic address:

Introduction: Appropriate identification of subjects who are candidates for spirometry through case-finding questionnaires may help solve the problem of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease misdiagnosis. The performance of case-finding questionnaires depends at least partially on the characteristics of the population used for their development. The use of an accurate threshold for the forced expiratory volume in 1 second / forced vital capacity ratio to define persistent airway obstruction is also vital in ascertaining chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Brain dysfunction is a frequent complication of the systemic inflammatory response to bacterial infection or sepsis. In the present work, the effects of intravenous bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration on cerebral arterial blood flow were assessed with time-of-flight (TOF)-based magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in mice. Cerebral expression of the transcription factors nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) and c-Fos and that of enzymes synthesizing vasoactive mediators, such as prostaglandins and nitric oxide, known to be increased under inflammatory conditions, were studied in the same animals.
