Adequate surgical resection remains the treatment of choice for tenosyovial giant cell tumor (TGCT). However, diffuse type TGCT (D-TGCT) is more difficult to resect and has a higher rate of recurrence (up to 50 %), which is often multiple. D-TGCT is rarely lethal and only rare cases of metastases have been described.

Autoimmune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) can be associated with other autoimmune disorders, but their prevalence following autoimmune TTP remains unknown. To assess the prevalence of autoimmune disorders associated with TTP and to determine risk factors for and the time course of the development of an autoimmune disorder after a TTP episode, we performed a cross sectional study. Two-hundred sixty-one cases of autoimmune TTP were included in the French Reference Center registry between October, 2000 and May, 2009.

Six targeted agents [sorafenib, sunitinib, temsirolimus, bevacizumab (plus interferon), everolimus and pazopanib] have been approved for the treatment of patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. As disease progression is inevitable, most patients will receive several lines of treatment. However, the choice regarding which sequence of drugs to use remains unclear, particularly concerning the drug class, i.

Background And Purpose: The endovascular treatment (EVT) of cerebral aneurysms has experienced a revolution since 1991 with the introduction of platinum coil technology. During the past 10 years, there has been significant study of the feasibility of this technique, and clinical results of EVT have been published. The long-term durability of Guglielmi detachable coil (GDC) embolization of cerebral aneurysms still remains unknown.

The objective was to develop and to validate an immunossay to identify recent human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infections that can be used on dried serum spots (DSS). A single, indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to quantify antibodies toward four HIV-1 antigens: consensus peptides of the immunodominant epitope of gp41 (IDE), consensus V3 peptides, recombinant integrase, and recombinant p24. The parameters of the logistic regression used to classify the samples were estimated on a training sample (210 serum samples) using resampling techniques to get stable estimates and then applied to a validation sample (761 serum samples).

[Antibiotic use: excesses and consequences].

Rev Prat

September 2003

Service des maladies infectieuses, centre hospitalier universitaire Bretonneau, 37044 Tours.

Antibiotic use in France is excessive. This statement is regularly expressed. The comparison with usage in other European countries, the frequency of use in viral infections, the misuse, specifically in the duration of treatment is easy proof of this.

Many Doppler imaging studies have been performed in recent years in a large number of ocular disorders because of improvements in the Doppler equipment used for detecting and measuring the low blood-flow velocities that are a requisite for the quantitative evaluation of blood flow in the orbital vessels. The ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery and vein, posterior ciliary arteries, and the superior ophthalmic vein can be easily identified using color Doppler sonography. The changes in local blood flow in these vessels assessed by spectral analysis pulsed Doppler sonography have been used to characterize and to obtain new insights into different nontumoral vascular disorders including carotid artery stenosis, central retinal vein occlusion, giant cell arteritis, glaucoma, diabetes, fistulas, and tumoral processes of the eye and orbit.

Object: The authors studied the cadaveric heads of 22 adults to describe the internal acoustic meatus (IAM) and its contents. Special attention was paid to the length of the arachnoidal and dural sheaths surrounding the neural structures, including the vestibular ganglion. An additional goal of this study was to verify anatomically the concept of arachnoidal duplication, which is reputedly induced by medial growth of vestibular neuromas and helpful in atraumatic dissection.

Background/aim: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is one of the most frequent ocular vascular diseases and leads to severe vision impairment. Colour Doppler imaging (CDI) is the first method which allows distinct evaluation of arterial and venous velocities in RVO. CDI is valuable for diagnosis of RVO and shows the effects of isovolaemic haemodilution.

Two successive hepatitis C virus infections in an intravenous drug user.

J Clin Microbiol

August 2000

Département de Microbiologie Médicale et Moléculaire, Unité de Virologie, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Bretonneau, Tours, France.

We report the case of an occasional intravenous drug user who developed two successive hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. The first infection led to seroconversion (anti-HCV antibodies detected) and the detection of HCV RNA in serum. After a spontaneous recovery (normalization of alanine aminotransferase levels and HCV RNA clearance), a second HCV infection was observed, with the recurrence of HCV viremia.

A plasmid-encoded extended-spectrum TEM beta-lactamase with a pI of 5.5 was detected in a Capnocytophaga ochracea clinical isolate. The bla gene was associated with a strong TEM-2 promoter and was derived from bla(TEM-1a) with a single-amino-acid substitution: Glu(104)-->Lys, previously assigned to TEM-17, which is thus the first TEM beta-lactamase to be reported in the phylum Flavobacter-Bacteroides.

Several studies have reported the spontaneous loss of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies in HCV-exposed persons. However, the relationship between seroreversion and spontaneous virus clearance has yet to be precisely determined in a single homogeneous population of untreated immunocompetent patients. In this study, 32 human immunodeficiency virus-seronegative hemophiliacs who had been exposed to HCV were followed for a mean duration of 141 months; 22 remained chronic carriers (68.
