Background In French-speaking Belgium, Emergency Medicine (EM) has been a recognized professional qualification for the last two decades. Currently, there is no consensus on the core competencies required for EM postgraduates. During the six-year training period, the acquisition of technical skills (scientific knowledge and technical procedures) is emphasized, but little account is taken regarding the development of non-technical skills such as communication, collaboration, leadership, and professionalism.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus infection presents complications known as long COVID, a multisystemic organ disease which allows multidimensional analysis. This study aims to uncover clusters of long COVID cases and establish their correlation with the clinical classification developed at the Clinical Research Unit of Brugmann University Hospital, Brussels. Such an endeavour is instrumental in customizing patient management strategies tailored to the unique needs of each distinct group.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI)-based combinations have become the standard first-line treatment for advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Despite significant improvements in survival and the achievement of sustained long-term responses, a subset of patients remains refractory to ICI, and most will eventually develop resistance. Thus, identifying predictive biomarkers for ICI efficacy and resistance is essential for optimizing therapeutic strategies.

Social restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in altered sleep patterns and mental health challenges, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Our objective was to examine the potential difference in insomnia prevalence and sleep patterns in this population between the first COVID-19 lockdown and the post-lockdown period, with a focus on chronotype. Additionally, we explored the network of sleep-related differences between these two periods.

Background: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection predisposes to malignant and non-malignant diseases warranting eradication. In Belgium, resistance rates for clarithromycin demonstrate regional variations making the use of standard triple therapy (STT) borderline acceptable. According to a recent Belgian survey, STT and bismuth-based quadruple therapy (BQT), are equally frequent prescribed as first line treatment for treatment naïve Hp positive patients.

Identifying patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (EF), either reduced [EF < 40% (rEF)], mid-range [EF 40-50% (mEF)], or preserved [EF > 50% (pEF)], is considered of primary clinical importance. An end-to-end video classification using AutoML in Google Vertex AI was applied to echocardiographic recordings. Datasets balanced by majority undersampling, each corresponding to one out of three possible classifications, were obtained from the Standford EchoNet-Dynamic repository.

Background And Objectives: The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) can be challenging in clinical practice because MS presentation can be atypical and mimicked by other diseases. We evaluated the diagnostic performance, alone or in combination, of the central vein sign (CVS), paramagnetic rim lesion (PRL), and cortical lesion (CL), as well as their association with clinical outcomes.
Methods: In this multicenter observational study, we first conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the CVS (proportion of CVS-positive lesions or simplified determination of CVS in 3/6 lesions-Select3*/Select6*), PRL, and CL in MS and non-MS cases on 3T-MRI brain images, including 3D T2-FLAIR, T2*-echo-planar imaging magnitude and phase, double inversion recovery, and magnetization prepared rapid gradient echo image sequences.

Background: There is a need for a better understanding of survivorship-related issues in advanced cancer survivors treated with immune checkpoint blockade (ICB). The purpose of this study was to identify survivorship-related issues, with a focus on psychological distress, cognitive complaints, physical sequelae, impact on family dynamics, and care needs in unresectable, advanced cancer survivors treated with ICB.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were conducted in survivors followed up at the University Hospital Brussels.

Malignant-associated abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE) is a rare pathology, likely to occur in 1% of scar endometriosis. The objectives of this study were to update the evidence on tumor degeneration arising from AWE to notify about the clinical characteristics, the different treatments offered to patients and their outcomes. A comprehensive systematic review of the literature was conducted.

Background: The optimal ventilation modalities to manage out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remain debated. A specific pressure mode called cardio-pulmonary ventilation (CPV) may be used instead of manual bag ventilation (MBV). We sought to analyse the association between mechanical CPV and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in non-traumatic OHCA.

Changes in developmental timing are an important factor of evolution in organ shape and function. This is particularly striking for human brain development, which, compared with other mammals, is considerably prolonged at the level of the cerebral cortex, resulting in brain neoteny. Here, we review recent findings that indicate that mitochondria and metabolism contribute to species differences in the tempo of cortical neuron development.

Background: Prevention of early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) is a frequent reason why many newborns receive unnecessary antibiotics. The Sepsis Risk Calculator (SRC) was developed by the Kaiser Permanente Institute as a multivariate risk assessment of EONS, aiming to reduce laboratory testing and empiric neonatal antibiotic therapy. Our objective was to assess the potential of the SRC in reducing antibiotic use in our setting.

Background And Purpose: Hyperoxia after return of spontaneous circulation is potentially harmful, and oxygen titration in a prehospital setting is challenging. This study aimed to compare outcomes of oxygen reserve index-supported prehospital oxygen titration during prehospital transport with those of standard oxygen titration.
Methods And Trial Design: We enrolled patients who experienced return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest in a prospective randomized study.

The Dissociative Identity Disorder has undergone significant transformations over the years. Once regarded as a rare condition, it gained popularity in the 1980s in the United States following the publication of a book on the subject, only to subsequently wane due to extensive controversies. Presently, we are witnessing a resurgence of adolescents who believe they may be afflicted by this disorder.

Bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease are two distinct neurological conditions that share common features related to dopaminergic dysfunction. This article presents a comprehensive review of the existing literature to investigate the association between bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease, focusing on the dopaminergic hypothesis and potential therapeutic options. The dopaminergic hypothesis suggests that both bipolar disorder and Parkinson's disease involve impairments in the nigrostriatal or mesolimbic dopaminergic pathways.
