Exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of <10 μm (PM) is a well-established health hazard. There is increasing evidence that geogenic (Earth-derived) particles can induce adverse biological effects upon inhalation, though there is high variability in particle bioreactivity that is associated with particle source and physicochemical properties. In this study, we investigated physicochemical properties and biological reactivity of volcanic ash from the April 2021 eruption of La Soufrière volcano, St.

Background: Trunk inclination in patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in the supine position has gained scientific interest due to its effects on respiratory physiology, including mechanics, oxygenation, ventilation distribution, and efficiency. Changing from flat supine to semi-recumbent increases driving pressure due to decreased respiratory system compliance. Positional adjustments also deteriorate ventilatory efficiency for CO removal, particularly in COVID-19-associated ARDS (C-ARDS), indicating likely lung parenchyma overdistension.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether the risk of large for gestational age (LGA) in babies born via frozen embryo transfer (FET) is linked to the freezing technique or endometrial preparation methods.
  • Findings indicate that artificial cycles have a higher association with LGA, but there is no significant difference in LGA rates between two freezing methods (vitrification and slow freezing) or embryo stages (cleaved or blastocyst).
  • The research analyzed 72,789 fresh embryo transfers and 49,664 FETs across 35 French ART centers from 2014 to 2018, revealing that while FET generally improves neonatal outcomes, it also increases LGA risk.

Inhibition of the endocannabinoid system reverses obese phenotype in aged mice and partly restores skeletal muscle function.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab

February 2023

Unité de Nutrition Humaine (UNH), Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRAE), Université Clermont Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, is associated with lipid accumulation and anabolic resistance; phenomena also observed in obesity and worsen when obesity and aging are combined. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is overactivated in obesity, but its role in aging obesity-related muscle dysfunction is unknown. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of inhibition of the ECS by rimonabant (RIM) on the metabolic alterations induced by a high-fat high-sucrose diet and on skeletal muscle mass/function in aged mice.

The identification and validation of biomarkers of food intake (BFIs) is a promising approach to develop more objective and complementary tools to the traditional dietary assessment methods. Concerning dairy, their evaluation in terms of intake is not simple, given the variety of existing foods, making it difficult to establish the association between specific dairy products consumption and the effects on human health, which is also dependent on the study population. Here, we aimed at identifying BFI of both milk (M) and yogurt (Y) in 14 healthy young (20-35 years) and 14 older (65-80 years).

Sleep disturbances and related disordered breathing after hip replacement surgery: A randomised controlled trial.

Anaesth Crit Care Pain Med

August 2021

Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Saint-Etienne, Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne, Saint-Etienne, F-42055, France. Electronic address:

Introduction: Mechanisms of postoperative sleep architecture disturbances and sleep-disordered breathing are uncertain. The authors hypothesised that patients undergoing surgery under regional anaesthesia without opioids used for postoperative analgesia would experience lesser changes in these parameters than patients operated under general anaesthesia with per- and postoperative opioids.

Patients And Methods: After ethical approval and informed consent, patients undergoing total hip replacement were included in a prospective, randomised trial comparing 3 groups of patients: (1) S-LPB group receiving spinal anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia by lumbar plexus block; (2) GA-PCA group receiving general anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia by morphine patient-controlled analgesia; (3) GA-LPB group receiving general anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia by lumbar plexus block.

The gut microbiota adapts to age-related changes in host physiology but is also affected by environmental stimuli, like diet. As a source of both pre- and probiotics, dairy and fermented foods modulate the gut microbiota composition, which makes them interesting food groups to use for the investigation of interactions between diet and ageing. Here we present the effects of excluding dairy products and limiting fermented food consumption for 19 days on gut microbiota composition and circulating metabolites of 28 healthy, young (YA) and older (OA) adult men.
