Background: The airway epithelium (AE) fulfils multiple functions to maintain pulmonary homeostasis, among which ensuring adequate barrier function, cell differentiation and polarization, and actively transporting immunoglobulin A (IgA), the predominant mucosal immunoglobulin in the airway lumen, via the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR). Morphological changes of the airways have been reported in ARDS, while their detailed features, impact for mucosal immunity, and causative mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to assess epithelial alterations in the distal airways of patients with ARDS.

Background: Passive immunization with plasma collected from convalescent patients has been regularly used to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Minimal data are available regarding the use of convalescent plasma in patients with Covid-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Methods: In this open-label trial, we randomly assigned adult patients with Covid-19-induced ARDS who had been receiving invasive mechanical ventilation for less than 5 days in a 1:1 ratio to receive either convalescent plasma with a neutralizing antibody titer of at least 1:320 or standard care alone.

Objective: In Belgium there is no centralization of surgery for ovarian cancer, with more than 100 centers treating around 800 cases per year. In 2017 a network with several collaborating hospitals was established to centralize surgery for ovarian cancer (UCLouvain Network of Gynecological Oncology; UNGO) following publication of the European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO) recommendations and quality criteria for surgery of advanced ovarian cancer. We obtained ESGO accreditation in 2019.

From an epidemiological and pathophysiological point of view, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) should be considered 'sister' diseases. T2DM significantly increases the risk of developing AD, and the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration themselves worsen peripheral glucose metabolism in multiple ways. The treatment of obesity can no longer be reduced to a simplistic view of weight loss. Metabolic adaptation leads to systematic weight regain following weight-loss efforts, and new obesity treatments should therefore aim to induce long-standing double-digit weight loss, and thus improve and even reverse obesity-associated comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes. Until now, only metabolic surgery has been able to achieve such a goal, but this invasive procedure cannot be offered on a large scale.

The kidney is commonly involved in multiple myeloma and other disorders producing monoclonal immunoglobulins. Crystalglobulinemia is a rare condition characterized by spontaneous crystallization and deposition of monoclonal immunoglobulins within the microvasculature of the kidney and other organs, leading to inflammation, ischemia, and end-organ damage. The present case and literature review highlight the clinical spectrum, diagnostic challenges, management, and outcomes of this underrecognized complication of monoclonal gammopathy.

Iodine deficiency (ID), which affects almost two billion people worldwide, is associated with breast pathologies such as fibrosis in human and induces breast atypia in animal models.
