Purpose: To describe and evaluate the effectiveness of the microscope and lens tilting technique associated with the three-dimensional viewing system for improving the peripheral retinal view in noncontact lens vitreoretinal surgeries.

Methods: Prospective, single-center, single-surgeon, consecutive case series of 25 patients undergoing vitrectomy for macular surgeries with three-dimensional visualization system. At the end of each surgery, the microscope and the noncontact lens were rotated by 20° in a direction opposite to the rotation of the eye to extend the peripheral visual field.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of digital visualization for enhancing the visualization of iridocorneal structures during surgical gonioscopy. This was a prospective, single-center study on a series of 26 cases of trabecular stent implantation performed by the same surgeon. Images were recorded during surgical gonioscopy, and before stent implantation, with standard colors and with the optimization of various settings, principally color saturation and temperature and the use of the cyan color filter.

Remote and precisely controlled activation of the brain is a fundamental challenge in the development of brain-machine interfaces for neurological treatments. Low-frequency ultrasound stimulation can be used to modulate neuronal activity deep in the brain, especially after expressing ultrasound-sensitive proteins. But so far, no study has described an ultrasound-mediated activation strategy whose spatiotemporal resolution and acoustic intensity are compatible with the mandatory needs of brain-machine interfaces, particularly for visual restoration.

Purpose: To describe the feasibility of intraoperative digital visualization and its contribution to the enhancement of macular pigmentation visualization in a prospective series of macular surgery interventions.

Materials And Methods: A prospective, single-center, single-surgeon study was performed on a series of 21 consecutive cases of vitrectomy for various types of macular surgery using a 3D visualization system. Two optimized filters were applied to enhance the visualization of the macular pigment (MP).

Human pegivirus identified in severe myelitis and optic neuritis in immunocompromised patients: A pathogenic role for a forgotten virus?

Rev Neurol (Paris)

April 2023

Service de Neurologie, Hôpital Fondation Adolphe-de-Rothschild, 25-29, rue Manin, 75940 Paris cedex 19, France. Electronic address:

The role of Human pegivirus (HPgV) in patients with encephalitis has been recently questioned. We present cases of 4 patients with similar clinical, biological, and radiological characteristics, including a past history of transplantation with long-term immunosuppression and a progressive course of severe and predominantly myelitis, associated in 3 cases with optic neuropathy causing blindness. Extensive workup was negative but analysis of the CSF by use of pan-microorganism DNA- and RNA-based shotgun metagenomics was positive for HPgV.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a black-and-white (BW) filter on the optimization of visualization at each stage of cataract surgery.

Methods: Prospective, single-center, single-surgeon, consecutive case series of 40 patients undergoing cataract surgery with BW filter. Surgical images and videos were recorded with and without the BW filter at each stage of cataract surgery.

Purpose: To assess the utility of the 3D viewing system in tilted microscope positions for the performance of cataract surgery in challenging positions, for patients with difficulty remaining supine.

Methods: Prospective, single-center, single-surgeon, consecutive case series of patients undergoing surgery in an inclined position.

Results: 21 eyes of 15 patients who had undergone surgery at inclined positions at angles of 20° to 80°, with a mean angle of 47.

After revolutionizing neuroscience, optogenetic therapy has entered successfully in clinical trials for restoring vision to blind people with degenerative eye diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa. These clinical trials still have to evaluate the visual acuity achieved by patients and to determine if it reaches its theoretical limit extrapolated from ex vivo experiments. Different strategies are developed in parallel to reduce required light levels and improve information processing by targeting various cell types.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared surgical outcomes for retinal detachment repair using air or gas tamponade in 262 patients with superior retinal breaks.
  • Results showed no significant difference in success rates between the air and gas groups at 3 and 6 months, both achieving high success rates.
  • However, the air group had better early visual recovery, lower rates of postoperative ocular hypertension, and fewer incidents of epiretinal membrane formation at 6 months compared to the gas group.

Background And Objective: The prognosis in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a matter of debate. Our aim was to assess the long-term outcomes of patients with MOGAD.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed the clinical and paraclinical data of patients from the French nationwide observatory study NOMADMUS who tested positive for MOG antibodies (MOG-IgG) and who had clinical follow-up of at least 8 years from their first episode.

Multimodal imaging of pre-Descemet corneal dystrophy.

Eur J Ophthalmol

September 2020

Service V, Centre Hospitalier National d'Ophtalmologie des XV-XX, Sorbonne Université, Paris, France.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess structural and histological changes associated with pre-Descemet corneal dystrophy with multimodal in vivo imaging.

Methods: Retrospective case series including eight corneas from four unrelated male patients with pre-Descemet corneal dystrophy characterized by the presence of punctiform gray opacities located just anterior to the Descemet membrane at slit-lamp examination of both eyes. In vivo confocal microscopy images were obtained in the central, paracentral, and peripheral corneal zones from the superficial epithelial cell layer down to the corneal endothelium in both eyes.

Purpose: To update the recommendations of the France Macula Federation for the diagnosis of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Methods: Analysis of literature and expert opinion.

Results: The FMF recommends diagnosing wet AMD by combining the results of fundus examination (or color or monochromatic fundus photographs), optical coherence tomography (OCT) showing exudative signs, and morphological visualization of the neovascular membrane, which may be obtained non-invasively (OCT-angiography) or invasively (fluorescein and/or indocyanine green angiography).
