Background And Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective surgery for treating hip osteoarthritis, but access is limited in Sub-Saharan Africa due to multiple challenges. While sickle cell anemia (SCA) and hereditary spherocytosis (HS) share common features of increased spleen erythrophagocytosis due to increased red blood cell (RBC) turnover, SCA is specifically characterized by susceptibility to infections. In this study, histological lesions in the spleens of pediatric patients with SCA were analyzed, in close correlation with past clinical history and comparatively to HS, healthy and transfused β-thalassemia patients (TDT). An evaluation of red pulp elementary lesions (red pulp fibrosis, iron deposition, number of Gandy-Gamna, and RBC trapping) combined into a severity score was established, as well as B-cell follicles analysis.

The short-term results of REACH on safety, feasibility, and effectiveness of hydroxyurea were published previously. Globally, there are prevailing knowledge gaps in the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and outcomes of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among children and adolescents; and these gaps are especially wide in African countries. The availability of robust age-disaggregated data is a critical first step in improving knowledge on disease burden and manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among children. In an effort to explore new knowledge and to develop meaningful collaborations for improving child health, the First Pan African Workshop on Newborn Screening was convened in June 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. Participants included an informal network of newborn screening stakeholders from across Africa and global experts in newborn screening and sickle cell disease. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an increasing global health problem and presents significant challenges to European health care systems. Newborn screening (NBS) for SCD enables early initiation of preventive measures and has contributed to a reduction in childhood mortality from SCD.
