Background And Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective surgery for treating hip osteoarthritis, but access is limited in Sub-Saharan Africa due to multiple challenges. This article describes the implementation of a THA program at Monkole Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo, focusing on the technical challenges and surgical complications. The objective is to share our experience to assist other professionals and organizations in similar settings.

Cognitive dysfunction in SCD is a common chronic neurological manifestation, but studies remain mostly descriptive in adults. The objective of this study was to better characterize the cognitive profile and the association between cognitive dysfunction and brain lesions.

While sickle cell anemia (SCA) and hereditary spherocytosis (HS) share common features of increased spleen erythrophagocytosis due to increased red blood cell (RBC) turnover, SCA is specifically characterized by susceptibility to infections. In this study, histological lesions in the spleens of pediatric patients with SCA were analyzed, in close correlation with past clinical history and comparatively to HS, healthy and transfused β-thalassemia patients (TDT). An evaluation of red pulp elementary lesions (red pulp fibrosis, iron deposition, number of Gandy-Gamna, and RBC trapping) combined into a severity score was established, as well as B-cell follicles analysis.

Background: Realizing Effectiveness Across Continents with Hydroxyurea (REACH) is an open-label non-randomised trial of hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide) in children with sickle cell anaemia in sub-Saharan Africa. The short-term results of REACH on safety, feasibility, and effectiveness of hydroxyurea were published previously. In this paper we report results from extended hydroxyurea treatment in the REACH cohort up to 8 years.

Children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) in Africa frequently require transfusions for SCA complications. Despite limited blood supplies, strategies to reduce their transfusion needs have not been widely evaluated or implemented. We analyzed transfusion utilization in children with SCA before and during hydroxyurea treatment.

Objectives: Partial artemisinin resistance, mediated by Plasmodium falciparum K13 (PfK13) mutations, has been confirmed in certain areas of East Africa that are historically associated with high-level antimalarial resistance. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) borders these areas in the East. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of resistance markers in six National Malaria Control Program surveillance sites; Boende, Kabondo, Kapolowe, Kimpese, Mikalayi, and Rutshuru.

Introduction: Currently, only 54% of the population of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) know their HIV status. The aim of this study was to detect HIV misdiagnosis from rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and to evaluate serological immunoassays using dried blood spots (DBS) from patients in Kinshasa, DRC.
Methods: Between 2016 and 2018, 365 DBS samples were collected from 363 individuals and shipped to Spain.

The World Health Organization has established an elimination plan for hepatitis C virus (HCV) by 2030. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) access to diagnostic tools is limited, and a number of genotype 4 subtypes have been shown to be resistant to some direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). This study aims to analyze diagnostic assays for HCV based on dried blood spots (DBS) specimens collected in Kinshasa and to characterize genetic diversity of the virus within a group of mainly HIV positive patients.

Globally, there are prevailing knowledge gaps in the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and outcomes of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among children and adolescents; and these gaps are especially wide in African countries. The availability of robust age-disaggregated data is a critical first step in improving knowledge on disease burden and manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among children. Furthermore, it is essential to improve understanding of SARS-CoV-2 interactions with comorbidities and coinfections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis, malaria, sickle cell disease, and malnutrition, which are highly prevalent among children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an increasing global health problem and presents significant challenges to European health care systems. Newborn screening (NBS) for SCD enables early initiation of preventive measures and has contributed to a reduction in childhood mortality from SCD. Policies and methodologies for NBS vary in different countries, and this might have consequences for the quality of care and clinical outcomes for SCD across Europe.
