Gonadotroph tumors, although frequent, are poorly studied and understood, being usually included in the larger nonfunctioning pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) group. Moreover, in comparison to the other types of PitNETs, no established medical treatment is currently available for gonadotroph tumors. Here, we performed a retrospective study and analyzed the clinicopathological characteristics of 98 gonadotroph tumors operated in a single large pituitary center.

Article Synopsis
  • Early identification of high-risk diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients is crucial for tailoring innovative treatments, as higher total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) at baseline is linked to poorer survival outcomes.
  • In a study analyzing patients aged 60-80 from the phase 3 REMARC trial, a TMTV cutoff of 220 cm³ was determined to aid in predicting progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).
  • The findings highlight that high TMTV, along with a poor Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS), can help identify an ultra-risk group, suggesting the need for more aggressive treatment strategies even after initial successful therapy with R-CHOP.

Objective: To identify candidate biomarkers of walking recovery with motor tract integrity measurements using fractional anisotropy (FA) from the corticospinal tract (CST) and alternative motor pathways in patients with moderate to severe subacute stroke.

Methods: Walking recovery was first assessed with generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with repeated measures of walking scores (WS) over 2 years of follow-up in a longitudinal study of 29 patients with subacute ischemic stroke. Baseline FA measures from the ipsilesional and contralesional CST (i-CST and c-CST), cortico-reticulospinal pathway (i-CRP and c-CRP), and cerebellar peduncles were derived from a 60-direction diffusion MRI sequence on a 3T scanner.

Managing infective endocarditis in older patients: do we need a geriatrician?

Aging Clin Exp Res

March 2021

CHU de Bordeaux, Pôle de Gérontologie Clinique, University of Bordeaux, 33000, Bordeaux, France.

Managing infective endocarditis in older patients is of growing concern since this severe infection is increasingly frequent in this population and is responsible for high mortality and morbidity. Specific issues concerning diagnostic procedures, antibiotic therapy and cardiac surgical decisions in this patient setting are highlighted here. They indicate that infectious diseases physicians, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons should adapt their therapeutic strategy beyond the available guidelines.

  • Nijmegen breakage syndrome is linked to mutations in the NBN gene and leads to severe health issues like microcephaly, cancer risk, and infertility.
  • A new study identified a specific NBN variant in Lebanese patients that is primarily associated with infertility, differing from the usual severe symptoms of the syndrome.
  • Functional tests showed that, despite reduced NBN levels and some cell cycle defects, these patients retained certain protein functions that may explain their milder symptoms compared to typical Nijmegen breakage syndrome cases.
