The healthcare sector significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions, with surgical pathology (SP) playing a notable role. This review explores the ecological transformation of SP, offering a global overview of existing challenges and sustainable initiatives worldwide. While some countries, such as the UK and France, have developed national strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare, including SP, many regions remain at an early stage of implementing green practices.

Background: The phase III PRIMA/ENGOT-OV26/GOG-3012 trial met its primary endpoint. Niraparib first-line maintenance significantly prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) among patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer that responded to first-line platinum-based chemotherapy, regardless of homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) status. Final overall survival (OS) results are reported.

The integration of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems in hospitals has been instrumental in reducing medication errors and enhancing patient safety. This study examines the implications of a software oversight in a CPOE system : Metoclopramide had a concentrated formulation (100 mg) delisted (and then not manufactured) in 2014 due to safety concerns. Despite this, the CPOE system continued to accept prescriptions for this formulation because it was not removed from the medication library by the pharmacist.

Background: The efficacy and safety of cefiderocol in ICU patients with difficult-to-treat resistance (DTR) non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria (Nf-GNB) are not as well-established. Consequently, we conducted a cohort study to compare Cefiderocol with the Best Available Therapy (BAT) in ICU patients.
Methods: We included adult patients from 9 different ICUs, including a burn ICU unit, from 2019 to 2023 treated with Cefiderocol for DTR Nf-GNB isolated from the blood or lungs.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare three different approaches for estimating 30-day survival in ICU studies, considering the issue of informative censoring that occurs when patients are lost to follow-up after discharge.
Design: A comparative analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of different approaches on the estimation of 30-day survival. Three methods were compared: the classical approach using the Kaplan-Meier (KM) estimator and Cox regression modeling, the competing risk approach using the Fine and gray model, considering censoring as a competing event, and the logistic regression approach.

Purpose: Septic shock is associated in some patients with a profound immunosuppression. We hypothesized that GM-CSF would reduce the occurrence of ICU-acquired infections in immunosuppressed septic patients.

Background: Haploidentical (haplo-) donors and cord-blood (CB) stem cells provide alternative transplant options in patients lacking an HLA-matched donor. In case of relapse or graft failure after a first alternative allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), a second alternative HSCT (HSCT2) is rarely considered due to a high risk of toxicity.
Methods: A retrospective French multicentre study was performed, including patients with hematologic malignancies who underwent two consecutive HSCT from alternative donors.

Background: Internal valve collapse is a frequent cause of nasal obstruction but remains poorly understood and is sometimes treated inappropriately as a result. No functional or imaging test for the condition has been validated and the reference diagnostic technique is physical examination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of four-phase rhinomanometry as a diagnostic test for internal valve collapse.

Objective: To compare old patients hospitalized in ICU for respiratory distress due to COVID-19 with old patients hospitalized in ICU for a non-COVID-19-related reason in terms of autonomy and quality of life.
Design: Comparison of two prospective multi-centric studies.
Setting: This study was based on two prospective multi-centric studies, the Senior-COVID-Rea cohort (COVID-19-diagnosed ICU-admitted patients aged over 60) and the FRAGIREA cohort (ICU-admitted patients aged over 70).
Crystal-storing histiocytosis and Bing-Neel syndrome are two diseases induced by paraproteins. Herein, we report a rare case of crystal-storing histiocytosis associated with Bing-Neel-like neurological manifestations in the context of a small B-cell lymphoma with plasmacytic differentiation, presumed to be a marginal zone lymphoma.

New anti-cancer therapeutics have been developed in the recent years and dramatically change prognosis and patient management. Either used alone or in combination, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), such as anti-CTLA-4 and anti-PD1/PD-(L)1, act by removing T-cell inhibition to enhance their antitumor response. This change in therapeutic targets leads to a break in immune-tolerance and a unique toxicity profile resulting in immune complications.

Locally advanced colorectal cancer is a challenge for surgeons and medical oncologist; 10 to 20% colorectal cancer debut as locally advanced disease, with tumors extending through the colon wall with perforation and/or invasion of adjacent organs or structures. Those locally advanced tumors have a worse prognostic at any stage due not only to systemic dissemination but also in a high percentage of patients, to locoregional recurrence, in fact, peritoneal carcinomatosis of colorectal origin is so predictable that we can assess the risk for each patient according to some histopathological and clinical features: small peritoneal nodules resected in the first surgery (70% probability), ovarian metastases (60%), perforated tumor onset or intraoperative tumor rupture (50%), positive cytology (40%), and pT4/mucinous pT3 up to 40%. Prophylactic or adjuvant hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy seems to be a promising strategy for patients with advanced colorectal cancer to prevent the development of peritoneal recurrence and improve prognosis of this group of patients.

After autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in the first complete remission (CR1), patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) may relapse and undergo allogeneic HCT in the second complete remission (CR2). The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of allogeneic HCT performed in CR2 comparing patients with prior consolidation by autologous HCT versus patients with chemotherapy consolidation. Included were 2619 adults with allogeneic HCT in CR2 from 2000 to 2017 with (n = 417) or without (n = 2202) prior autologous HCT.

Flow cytometry is broadly used for the identification, characterization, and monitoring of hematological malignancies. However, the use of clinical flow cytometry is restricted by its lack of reproducibility across multiple centers. Since 2006, the EuroFlow consortium has been developing a standardized procedure detailing the whole process from instrument settings to data analysis.

In splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL), specific and functional Toll-like Receptor (TLR) patterns have been recently described, suggesting their involvement in tumoral proliferation. Splenic diffuse red pulp lymphoma with villous lymphocytes (SDRPL) is close to but distinct from SMZL, justifying here the comparison of TLR patterns and functionality in both entities. Distinct TLR profiles were observed in both lymphoma subtypes.

Background: Septic shock is characterized by dysregulation of the host response to infection, with circulatory, cellular, and metabolic abnormalities. We hypothesized that therapy with hydrocortisone plus fludrocortisone or with drotrecogin alfa (activated), which can modulate the host response, would improve the clinical outcomes of patients with septic shock.
Methods: In this multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial with a 2-by-2 factorial design, we evaluated the effect of hydrocortisone-plus-fludrocortisone therapy, drotrecogin alfa (activated), the combination of the three drugs, or their respective placebos.

Methods: CT and MRI examinations of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis were evaluated. CT images were first analysed by two observers who determined a first PCI (PCI ).
