Roughly 40% of asthmatics are or have been smokers. These smoking asthmatics have been largely overlooked in the past. Tobacco is today considered as a risk factor for asthma and it seems that smoking asthmatics exhibit a different phenotype as compared to non smoking asthmatics.

Isolated adenomatous polyposis of the appendix: report of a case.

This case study describes a 61-year-old patient who had previously undergone sigmoid polypectomy. A follow-up colonoscopy revealed a polyp prolapsing into the colonic lumen through the base of the appendix. A laparoscopic-assisted appendectomy was performed, in which the cecum was exteriorized through the trocar hole so that a wide excision of the base could be performed.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.

We introduced open adjustable silicone gastric banding (ASGB) for treatment of morbid obesity in our institution in 1991. It was done in a prospective study comparing ASGB with vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) with regard to weight loss. After 200 cases of open ASGB and 210 VBG procedures and the encouraging weight loss results, we started laparoscopic placement of the adjustable silicone band.

Cibenzoline in the prevention of recurrence of supraventricular arrhythmias.

Hundred and twenty-three outpatients were treated with oral cibenzoline for 3 months in order to test the efficacy and safety of the compound in the prevention of the recurrence of supraventricular arrhythmias. The dose was 260-390 mg/day for those under 70 and 130-260 mg/day for those over 70 years. All patients were converted to sinus rhythm before entry to the study and 95 patients had previously been treated with one or more drugs which had been discontinued due to lack of effect and/or poor tolerability.
